I wasted so much time on Tower 6F. Damn it. WHEN is your FAQ going up?
I switched between the two soundtracks every time I'd hit a new floor. Highly satisfied with both.

Well, I can't really say how much I like one over the other so far, since I'm still playing the ruins in both the SNES version and Dark Revenant, but so far I'm really enjoying the PSP version and I'm primarily playing the SNES to get the English background story such as what the shopkeepers are saying as well as the plates. Dark Revenant is my first Brandish experience so far and so far I've really taking a liking to the series. Also, the music for the PSP version is something that I really like. So much in fact that I've ordered the OST to it as well. I've yet to listen to the original PC-88 version, but I will possibly during a second playthough one day. Aiming for 100 exploration percent on all floors at the moment.
As far as Ares being chibi, I'm not so sure he looks like a chibi-character either. I didn't really see it that way until Adoru pointed it out, and yeah, I guess he does look a little short, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it messes with the dark atmosphere or environment that Brandish is trying to portray given the background story of the fallen kingdom.
Reminds me a TON of Vagrant Story, which is one of my all time favorite PSX games, so that's a good thing. Although I'm guessing one could make the claim that Vagrant Story ripped it from Brandish, but either way you look at it equals two separate fun and interesting gaming experiences.
I only wish I had more time to play it. Gaming time is very limited at the moment due to college courses. Right now with Lindaluv's information at the top of the page, I was able to find that last percentage of BF2, and just found the Casino... so that's ah... definitely something new to check out. I wonder if the armour there is worth it or not. : )

I'll probably finish the guide today. I'm a horrible FAQ writer because I can't bring myself to spoil the surprises, but because people still had problems on the board I had to give in and expanded the Ares mode part a lot. SkyeWelseJax Aagar's guide for SNES Brandish contains the script for the entire game, including plaques and shop banter. You could use that instead of playing both versions. But! If you still insist on playing both versions, could I bug you with a bit of a request? It'd be cool if you could keep track of the changes between versions. I've got the gameplay stuff covered, but I'm a bit fuzzy on the events. For instance, in TDR you find a man on the ground when you open the first door. In the SNES version that guy isn't there, but you find him in front of the door to the Ninja bossfight. In TDR there's just a skeleton at that place. And there's the changes made to bossfights. Stuff like that. You really don't have to do it, but it'd be a neat extra section to the guide. I'll eventually get to doing it myself.

Thanks for pointing out that Jax Aagar's guide has a script, though I think I will continue to play the SNES version through. Might as well, so I'll be on the look out for those changes you were referring to. I did notice some thing were a bit different concerning the layout of that first soldier and combat was VERY different considering enemies in the SNES version can zip right past you, hitting you and forcing you to reorient yourself. But the attacks can be spammed a bit in the version. And of course, there's the whole stacking items bit that threw me for a loop. Jeffx told me that the SNES version won't allow you to stack items until after you've gotten the second holding chest.

Thanks for doing it! Yeah, they really fudged that stacking stuff up in the SNES version.
Something I forgot to mention in my previous post is that I equipped the scroll that increases your experience, the one you get from the Gadie/Gayla sidequest. This sidequest wasn't in the SNES version, they probably added it in TDR as a bonus reference to a reference in Brandish 2.
Anyway, equipping this scroll the moment you get it on Tower F9 till the end of the game pretty much equals playing Easy Mode. It boosts not only Level experience, but also your Strength and Intelligence experience income. Plowed through bosses with the greatest ease, the final boss took only six hits with strength boosting magic. Considering I barely scratched him with my attacks on the first playthrough, this is quite a difference.
So yeah, I don't recommend using that item. Just put it back in Gadie's chest or something.
EDIT: These are the differences I've got for now.

Anniversary resurrection! It's been a year already since the game was released in Japan...
So, what are your hopes for the future of the series? A remake of The Planet Buster or an original entry? Just thinking about a redone Planet Buster and Spirit of Balcan gets me all excited, not in the least because we'd finally get some remixes for the excellent music. A new entry would be cool too as Falcom has shown to still have some designing skill with Dela Mode. I'd hate to part with the old cast if they make a new game though, but as long as they allow me to turn the world I'll get over it!

I have virtually no Brandish experience (I think I rented the original on SNES back in the day), but I've heard it's roquelike-ish, a genre I've recently gotten into (on consoles, boo to ascii graphics), is this something I should try out if I enjoy roguelikes?

There is no doubt. You, wheels, have what it takes to enjoy Brandish greatly!
I highly recommend this PSP version. There's a guide for it on Gamefaqs in case you get stuck, and the SNES guide on the same site has a story transcript so you'll usually know what's going on. It's extremely light on story though, but the fact that you rarely meet another living soul only adds to the atmosphere. Not to forget that only this version unlocks a Dela mode upon completion that really pushes the possibilities of the Brandish engine to its limits.
The SNES version is of course an option too, but it tends to leave a bad first impression on people. The difference that really matters between the PSP and SNES version is that once you understand the series mechanics and stuff, the PSP version is just perfect, while the SNES still has a few weird issues.

Excellent, I think I'll pick it up the next time I place an order with Falcom.

Yes, the PSP version of Brandish, The Dark Revenant is one game that I still strongly feel now, as I did when I first finished it, as a masterpiece of game design. It combines all the great aspects of action-rpgs, with a wonderful balance of exploration and puzzle-solving. It's all there. One solid package of awesomeness...
Oh and just when you think you've beaten it and you think you know how to play the game well and know how stuff works? You are then presented with a new challenge, a "second quest" if you will where everything you know about Brandish if flipped upside down and made that much more challenging.
It is almost as if the game designers said, "You think you're hot stuff?" "You haven't seen anything yet!".

Sorry to revive a year-old topic, but how do you complete the first floor of the fortress? Every walkthrough & topic I've found on the net do little to nothing to help me except for something about looking north. any help?
