I know this is a Ys board, but I can't resist the temptation.
Anyone into Bemani? I'm a pretty big fan of the series, but I don't play the most popular game, which is DDR.
My favs are Beatmania IIDX, Drummania and Guitar Freaks.
I've imported all the IIDX games for PS2 and I'm loving every one of them, however it's not for everyone.

Actually, I -believe- there are Ys songs that have been worked in for Beatmania. Done by fan sites, yeah, but I think I have a version of "Termination" on me right now that's meant for Beatmania. Seems like it, anyway. Has a .BMS file extension, along with a mess of other disjointed music files. Personally? Haven't played 'em. I have no rhythm for that sort of thing.

The song 'FIRE' rocks! By the way, Vert, it's power rock. Heh. Consider it added to the list of songs I need to look for, then. Thank ya.

I haven't played too many Bemani games outside of DDR.
There was this one game that I think someone got on an import and brought it to a LAN party. It had five censors, and you move your arms horizontally across the censors to the beat. It was more fun than it sounds.
I love DDR though. For a while, I think going to the arcade to play DDR was my primary forms of exercise.

I only recently got into DDR. In fact, I picked up a hot BNS hardfoam mat to go with my official Konami mat (which is now my backup or 2nd player mat). I picked up the following music discs: DDR PSOne DDR Konamix PSOne DDR Disney Mix PSOne DDR Max 1 PS2 DDR Max 2 PS2 DDR Extreme PS2
Amazingly enough, I hear Yuzo Koshiro will be contributing to DDR Extreme 2, due out in a few months.
I suppose I'll also be picking up DDR Mario Mix when it hits the GameCube, also later this year for us Westerners.
Edit - As I said, I'm very new to it, and am still only on my first disc, that being Extreme. I think I have all of the songs unlocked, but am still working hard on becoming proficient on the Standard difficulty level. Took me a good week and a half - two weeks to master the Beginner level. I think I may move on to a different music disc before getting too much better. Getting kinda bored with the songs. (Though Never Ending Story ROOOOOCKS!! Aaaaah, the memories.) Anywho, I highly recommend an "Ignition" style hardfoam mat, either by BNS or LevelSix, or the more expensive (yet seemingly indentical quality) RedOctanes. Much better than the default, easy to tear softmat, and MUCH cheaper than the still fragile metal pads.

HAHAHA. Reviving an thread from 2005!
Ah, the search feature is soooo handy. ^____^ I like all Bemani games though since I mostly played them at arcades, I don't really get around to goofing around with them anymore. The exception would be Pop'n Music though~!
I put Pop'n 12 into the PS2 again last night and play a little of it ... when I was actually looking to play Pop'n 10 instead. 9_9
Once I found 10, I stuck that into it and played that. I like the track list of 10 more than 12 but I like the unlock system in the latter more! Problem with it though, is that it seems impossible for me to hit any squares with Winter on it. I got at least one of every other season but bloody Winter remains elusive! Damn my poor ninja star throwing skills! >:/
I still wanna try more Beatmania but it's seriously annoying as hell to play with anything but the proper controller. >:( Same goes for Pop'n Music's 9-button mode.
Guess I'll look into investing in one next year. :3
But! The sooner the better cuz 5-button Pop'n Music bores the hell out of me. They're so mean to wussy players cuz it seems like you can't get to the higher difficulty levels (like the EX mode tunes, etc.) through it. >:(
It's actually kind of strange I like rhythm games cuz
I'm not very good at them. Depending on which game it is, sometimes I get almost equal amount of Perfects and Greats so accuracy is a huge problem for me. :P
People can keep saying that practice makes perfect but I can tell you that even if you keep playing a tune a billion times over and over, you'll probably end up hitting a plateau of sorts and not improve after a certain point because you keep playing the tune the same way without actually consciously trying to correct mistakes. :/ Well, this is true for the DJMax stuff (which is not Bemani). :B

Nunuu..... Did you buy Samba De Amigo yet? Nope! :D I actually just blew about $1000 on car repairs! Well, more like maintenance cuz other than the engine oil leak, nothing else was wrong. Things just needed to be changed and stuff though. Stupid expensive labour. So yeah~ Amigo's probably going to be on the back-burner for a while ... unless I ask for it from my local real life friend for Christmas. Or my brother.

Bemani games? So that's what they call these? In my language that means "dishonesty" hehe. Whatever, I just call them rhythm games with peripherals... ok maybe Bemani is easier to say... guess that's my answer only Rhythm game I'm interested in playing now is Rhythm Tengoku

Getting half perfects and half greats counts as mastering the song, in my book. Striving to get all perfects in a song is sort of pointless, as it robs the game of all its fun. (: Pssh. Not to the hardcore freaks. All they care about is being the best and showing everyone else up. Then they put you down for not getting enough perfects. >_> And man! Almost forgot about Rhythm Heaven! @_@ What the? It's scheduled for release in the 2nd quarter of next year!?!??!?! Wonder what's taking it so long? Ah well, that gives me time to play all the DJMax games to death. :B

Which DJMax game would you recommend Zuu~? They look like fun but as there's qiote a few I've got no idea where to start! Well~! DJMax Portable has no difficulty level selection but their 6B and 8B modes are known to be brutal. The game also only has 4B, 6B, and 8B. I so fucking HATE Blythe on 4-button mode cuz all it is is a RAIN OF NOTES with no bloody rhythm or beat to it. I heard that a lot of 8-button tunes are like that, apparently. >_> I can't remember how the unlock mode in this game works but I think it just consist of play count, getting a certain combo amount, and levelling up which means you'll be grinding forever to get everything. OR! You can simply download the 100% game file from GameFAQs. :3 DJMax Portable 2 has 4B, 5B, 6B, and 8B modes plus you can play on Easy, Normal, or Hard. You can only level up to level 30 on Easy though. The unlock method in this game consists of pure grinding, comboing, plus playing the 70 Xtreme Challenge modes, many of which I can't do for the life of me cuz my limit is that low. :P Here's the complete list of challenges: callusnext.com/djmax/DJMAX%20Portable%202/XC%A5%EA%A5%B9%A5%C8/ However, some of the song types are wrong (like they should be Hard instead of Normal version). I haven't encountered the mindless note-dropping in this game yet but I think tunes like Brain Storm and Nightmare border on it. Oh, IIRC, Portable 2 has more songs too and some of the DJMP tunes can be played on it in 5B mode. AND if you have both games, you can play Link Disc mode where all Portable tracks can be played using Portable 2's difficulty system. But you can still only play on 4B, 6B, and 8B though. DJMax Fever, the upcoming North American version which combines both the games, is said to be more friendly and will appeal to a broader range of players with more difficulty modes and I think they're making it easier to unlock some stuff too. I think I'd recommend this one to you if you've never played any of the games before. :3 Thing is, I can't verify how awesome it is compared to the other two. DJMax Clazziquai Edition and DJMax Black Square are the same as one another except Black Square is supposedly for the hardcore crowd with some more songs and also it's more difficult. Going by this, I assume Clazziquai is more like for the casual players that aren't out to pull their hair out and grind their PSP into the ground. :B Clazziquai is apparently a Korean music group! Wiki entry on them: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClazziquaiI'm curious of their music! I should look for some to sample/download. ^^ Dunno if any of the above information about the games is useful to you though but! If I were to choose between DJMax Portable and Portable 2, I'd choose the latter because it has 5B and a better comboing unlock system.

I play StepMania every once in a while. I love it because it's free, has hundreds of songs for download, different skins, and plays just like Konami's DDR games. www.stepmania.com/wiki/Downloads <3 <3 <3Haven't played it in a while but I can say that I can only dream of getting the crazy scores that I do in StepMania on an actual DDR machine. I'd never have the stamina to last through them. XD (I do songs on Heavy or Oni on 2x+ speed and stuff in SM. ^^~) Hey, I actually recorded some d00de doing a Dragonforce tune on StepMania at Anime North one year. XD Notes were flying up the screen at like 293847239 beats per minute. :/ Oh! There are some PC simulation programs for just about every rhythm game! For DJMax, I use O2Mania. :D The problem with this is that O2Mania has very horrible grading accuracy. The game loves to give you Breaks/Misses in any stage that has you hitting other keys while doing a hold. >_> Even the best DJMax players can get crap scores in the thing. >:( It's worse than DJMP2's Hard difficulty, I tells ya. :E

I've never played DDR out of fear of looking like an idiot in public I don't recall ever seeing a Guitar Freaks, Drum Mania, IIDX or any of the other Bemani machines though. Rhythm game experience is pretty much limited to Rock Band and the Ouendan series. I should consider Stepmania as long as decent pads aren't horribly expensive, but if RB's drum set has taught me anything, I have horrible foot coordination to begin with and will need lots of practice lol
