Thinking back to the first image I ever saw of Ys, on the Sega Master System... The words Ys, and then Feena's image...
Imprisoned for centuries first, then at last saved by Adol at the promised time. She gets what? A couple days? Less than a week to live freely? In all the versions of Ys I that I've seen (including the anime), she wishes that these days living freely as a human to not end.
Then Adol finds the harmonica, and releases their memories; to which Feena hides the truth of who she really is...
Soon after the conclusion of Ys I, Feena and Lair/Reah guide Adol to where he needs to be, and they return to where they wait [the statue chamber?] near the Black Pearl...
Then at the end of Ys II, Feena thanks Adol... and maybe most of all for the treasured time that she had living simply as a human...
And so, everyone rejoices and goes on their mostly merry way with how things have turned out...
At the last scene, we see Feena and Lair/Reah in the quiet dark, alone safe guarding/sealing the pearl... or something...
So... I haven't played Ys Origin, Ys Oath, Dawn of Ys (which is kinda non canonical?), Ys V or Ys Seven yet. But, the way it ends for Feena... Isn't it too sad? After so many lifetimes of waiting, is it really fair to simply have to lock yourself away after waiting so long?? She is given a few days in dangerous times to live free, and then what? They seal away in some place? Even if one were to blame them for creating the Black Pearl, or even if they could have foreseen what would happen...
I don't know I just always felt sad for Feena. She's the first sight I ever associated with Ys besides the name; and she sort of is just forgotten/given a minor bit role. Always felt that Feena's story was never complete...
I guess I always hoped the story of Ys would revisit the Goddesses story. I had hoped Origin would be my answer, but unless I'm mistaken, I think they already disappear by that time...
This thread is really just open discussion on Feena. Mostly targeting the events of Ys II [since that's the last that I know that really deals with the two original Goddesses in canon...]

Ys Origin is actually ALL ABOUT Feena and Reah, and they play a HUGE role in the story... but that doesn't really answer your question, since that's all stuff that happened 700 years before Adol arrived in Esteria. (:
I honestly think, though, that your assessment is about right... Feena gets a little bit of freedom, then resigns herself to her fate. That's... a very Japanese story. Very much in keeping with Japanese literary tradition. It's an example of the classic "mono no aware" theme - the idea that beauty and wonderment come from transience, and you can only really appreciate the good things in life after they're gone.

I have two things to point out:
1st - Actually she wasn't sealed in the prison at Solomon Shrine for centuries or anything to that effect: both Reah and Feena had to became statues (located in the room behind where you fight Vagullion/end of Ys II) to keep some seal of sorts. It was to prevent monsters from showing up in Esteria and all the lands from "the ground" or something like that. Centuries later after THAT, Feena had been turned back to her normal, flesh form, by no other than Dark Fact, and she DID lose her memory when it happened. Therefore, the seal was undone, and calamity befell Esteria. Feena was held in prison from that time until Adol came. I'm not sure for how long that was, but the time formula is: The moment the Storm Barrier appeared until Adol came to Esteria. Wasn't it 6 months or so?
2nd - Back in the old days of the Ys Utopia, the Goddesses have trusted the humans with the Black Pearl and all its powers, like magic and the creation of Cleria. However, the reason calamity befell Ys because of the Pearl is: the humans weren't ready yet to use it. The Goddesses loved her people, which is why they trusted them, but they were wrong. In the ending of Ys II, the Goddesses are holding onto the Pearl, so that one day the humans are able to deal with it.
Anyway, no need to feel bad. Feena (or Reah) didn't seal herself away in sadness and sorrow or anything of that nature: she was glad and happy. That's all.
(Also, this is a kind of odd topic. XD)
Edit: Oh, and please, overlook my typos and stuff. xD *lazy editor*

Thanks for the info Red Hairdo! ;D If that's true then maybe it's not too bad for Feena... (although I still think she needs more on time on screen :P) Kinda an odd topic I admit... plus I was listening to the sad/lonesome version of Feena's song while writing it :X
And Wyrdwad, can't wait! Sounds like Ys Origin might be my answer after all :)
