I don't think that's it. I already had the magic with the fire & thunder swords before trying the blacksmith. I figured maybe it upgraded the effect of the magic, but I can't tell any difference! So, I don't know.
There's five magic swords actually; Flame Wind Sword, Ice Wind Sword, Thunder Sword, Hero Sword and Violent Light Sword. The first three's corresponding spell can be upgraded at a blacksmith if you have an appropriate gem. Each sword can only be upgraded ONCE. It's been a while since a HD crash killed my save (I was right up to the end too ), but I think you just shoot out more projectiles at once after upgrading, I never used much magic besides the Hero Sword's anyway.
If RPGs have taught us anything, it's that violence often erupts completely at random and for no good reason.
few days ago, i startet playing ys4 mots... tomorrow i´m going to beat the last boss (need a break now). the game rocks!!!!!!!! i think i can answer your question: the blacksmith ads the jewel to your sword so that you don´t have to equipe it each time you want to fire. bevore you go to the blacksmith you must use the jewel as an extra item so you can´t use another item (for example herb) while you wan´t to fire. hope you understand my explanation although my english is so bad.

I think I get what you're saying, btw, you're english isn't that bad, not that it's perfect(neither is mine ). I might play it later. I'm at the very end of Suikoden 4, the very last ship battle or whatever is about to happen, so I want to finish that, & I've only been able to play Ys 6 a tiny bit, so I want to play that for awhile, but I'm in the middle of MOTS, it's sooo confusing!
