Has anyone here seen Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart (Mimi o Sumaseba)?
It's one of my favourite movies and an amazing film. It's based in reality and follows the story of a young girl who decides to dedicate herself to writing a story...well, it's a little more complicated than that but it is an essential movie for Ghibli fans - less fairytale than Miyazaki's movies and to me harks back to the nostalgic days of summer holidays. The Japanese release has full English subtitles too.

So you're saying that a girl decides "I'm going to write a book" and do that? It sounds both intressting and funny and it's based on a TRUE story? cool! Gotta see it sometime.

I didn't say it was based on a true story, I said it was based in reality. What I meant by that was that it is not set in the future or some fantastical universe, but in modern day and is directed very much like a Japanese live action movie.
It's a lovely film and shows that Miyazaki isn't the only talent at Ghibli.

I think it's one of the better animes out there. The coming of age story may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it has the same feel that made Omoide Poro Poro famous.
To my knowledge, the movie is based on a short running shoujo comic with the same name, and I believe the author's name is Aoi Hiragi.

Is Omoide Poro Poro "Only Yesterday?" I wish I knew Japanese, heh.
I still haven't seen that film, though it's next on my list.

Omoide Poro Poro is great, and so is Whisper of the Heart. I like all Ghibli films.
Have you seen the kinda-sequel-but-not The Cat Returns?
I think that was fun, but not as in depth as Whisper of the Heart was.
