Started watching this one a few weeks ago, have meant to for years given my undying love for all things Xenogears. I have watched the first 8 episodes so far and to be perfectly honest, I'm quite disappointed! The overall story is very slow moving and I'm getting a little impatient for something interesting to happen, which is made even more difficult since I don't really like any of the characters. So I'm going to watch the 3rd disc probably this week (yay Netflix), but if that doesn't hook me I'm giving up. Oh, and this thread isn't intended just to bash the series, I searched and found no thread for this particular anime, so here we go.

The thing you have to understand about anime...especially big series like evangalion...is that the story never picks up until after ep 10+. Most of the time is crappy establishment episodes at the beggining. Did you know what Gundam Wing was cancelled after the 10th or 11th ep in Japan....it was the reruns that brought the show back.

I like this series, if you ask me it is really worth staying on board and watching the rest of them. Rei is my favorite character. I think if I was in the same situation I would react similar to her. Plus Viz comics gave me a "special thanks" in the first English translation of the manga, I have a soft spot for this series because of that.

Remember that the religious elements of this show are only meant as style.... which is a good thing.
The real meat are the characters which I've been adoring since I first met them 6 years ago^^
And yeah after episode 24, watch the End of Evangelion movies^^
And yeah you gotta like character-study stuff or you're bound to get dissapointed... especially in the second half of the movies.^^
If there's something confusing or unnecessarily boring about the show, I might be able to explain it (lol might).

Evangelion really is a good show, just keep watching. It takes about half of the series before it gets really interesting. And make sure you look at the Director's Cut of eps 21..24, and End of Evangelion after you complete the series.

Okay I watched the 3rd disc the other night, I think I'm hooked! Sometimes I forget that anime series are like old classic movies, in that they take their time to show character development and THEN get to the heavy stuff.

Seriously how can you even consider yourself an anime fan without watching the classics?
Classics break from the mold. They take risk on doing something different. Kinda like how Yoshiyuki Tomino stripped giant robots off of their heroic qualities with Gundam^^

Another quick update, as I've watched the first 6 discs now. WOW! This is amazing! I'm very pleased. Thanks for those that told me to keep watching.

Okay I just finished the last episodes. It'll take awhile for my mind to process what went on, but I must say it was very good and I'm glad I watched the entire series. Unfortunately Netflix doesn't have the movies so I haven't watched them yet. I'm hoping The End of Evangelion fills in the gap between the last angel and Instrumentality. Okay, just placed an Ebay bid for the DVD.

Maybe that's why I couldn't get past Episode 8. There was no story and I totally lost interest.

Weird, I believe every little thing that happens in this show actually has weight in the storyline. Like why Misato was nice (even the reason to her goofiness was explained), or why Asuka was such a bitch, or why Rei is.... well mysterious. Not only that, why does Gendo act like the why he does. Why does every character act the way the do. That's what's great about Evangelion. It's so intricate (which also means it's not for everybody) And the movies were so unpredictable it left me speechless (and kinda depressed). Also, ignore the religious references. They're just there for style. It's all about characterization and the execution of the show man. And I suggest you also check out the first Gunbuster OVA (by Gainax and directed by Hideaki Anno) WARNING: this link may contain spoilers!!!^^ www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG_N0gl0Tak

Okay after watching The End of Evangelion, and thinking about the original episodes 25 & 26 for a few weeks, I must say the original intent of Hideaki Anno was VASTLY SUPERIOR to the movie. Other than the impressive visuals, it left a very bad taste in my mouth. I actually did quite a rant on another forum just now but I'll spare everyone that. For now. That being said, after mulling over the series itself, I must say that it was pretty damn brilliant. I'm glad I stuck to it and I will likely be purchasing the DVDs for repeat viewing.

That being said, after mulling over the series itself, I must say that it was pretty damn brilliant. I'm glad I stuck to it and I will likely be purchasing the DVDs for repeat viewing. The last two minutes of the film is perfect (and VERY creative) IMO. I never could've thought that "everything is back to normal" can be represented in such ambiguity^^ At my initial viewing, I thought that it was unnecessary and that Shinji's final convo with her mom would've been enough. But after about a dozen more viewings and pondering later, you should realize what the final scene actually meant (well it is open to interpretation actually, but from how I see it....BRAVO). PS: I think the events on the TV episode 25 & 26 were retold on the movie's second half anyway (during Shinji's "soul searching") so that should be more than enough reason to favor the movie over the TV ending IMO^^ Oh and yeah I heard the movie was the ending Hideaki Anno intended if only the sponsors didn't reject the script due to it's explicit content (especially considering the show's timeslot). As for the DVDs, I'll likely purchase the Platinum Editions IF the decide to release the Renewal versions of the films (with Death being combined with End of Eva that replaces Rebirth, plus the deleted live action scenes included).

I just finished watching this series! WOW!!! It's ashamed that there won't be another series like it, unless you consider Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days. If anybody wants to know what that is, watch episode 26 or go to here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4OI6hMGYkk

According to Wikipedia, Manga is still trying to get the Renewal versions of both movies. Just pray that they get the OK.
