Trust me, stick to it. I never watched the movie a second time, but I regularly tout the amazingness that was the series. Brilliant stuff.

I prefer Macross & Gundam. Not to mention Gunparade March.

I love Macross and Gundam (especially the first one) because of their focus on the characters and their lives with the mechs and the battles taking the back seat.
And that is also the same reason I love Evangelion. The first episode gave me the impression that this is a unique take on the giant robot genre in that they made it more realistic (no shouting special attacks names) with battles resembling Ultraman more than Mazinger Z. That caught my attention, yet by the second episode (and the episodes that would follow), it became a LOT more interesting that that - it became a show that focused about characters that seek to understand their environment and themselves.
Been done before 1994-5 (time of the show's production just in case you didn't know)? Well let's throw in Hideaki Anno unique storytelling style and direction that ( from my long experience as an anime audience) only he can do, the show contains a level and style of drama that made the show stand out and engrossing (up to the unpredictably tragic end).
Also check out Gunbuster Aim for the Top - it was also done by Hideaki Anno a few years before Evangelion with character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto (of Macross fame). To sum the show up, it's a shorter (6 episodes) more Super Robot-ish version/prototype of Evangelion. It's coming soon to DVD here in the U.S. from Bandai Visuals/Honneamise.

Gunbuster is one of my all time favorites, it has a great soundtrack. I didn't care to check out Gunbuster 2 though.

Gunbuster 2 was done by the FLCL team that, although I do give them a lot of credit for their work on FLCL, they just didn't reach the standards of Hideaki Anno's first series with its soundtrack being a mere redone version of the previous, plus the inferior character designs (though the fight scenes are a joy to behold).
It is great to see however that (SPOILER!!) the last episode creates a connection with the first series.

To be honest, the second episode of NGE kinda just took the seriousness away from that serie in complete... A freaking Penginue.. Sure the serie can be alot of fun and good, but I won't be taking it rather serious - nor character wise or story. Super Dimensional Fortress MACROSS ( the first ) is nothing more then a awe-cool show - WITHOUT PENGIVNS - but the ending was crap if I recall ~ However they fixed it with the movie Macross - Do you remember love? which had an improved storyline over the series which ended with Hikaru sticking with Minmey who ( excuse my language ) was nothing more then a good'ol fashioned Shedog ( Old English dictionary, look it up! ) instead of the sweet heart with a attitude of "Work must be DONE fast!" who is just cuddly and all.
TELL ME! Would you rather have someone who've treated you like air and still is unsure if person will stick with you, or do you want someone who jobs themselves tired, come home and just wanna get cozy and cuddle rest of the day?
Never ever seen Gunbuster 1 even. Oh, and I rarely care about whom made this and that anime. Most are usually sponsored by BANDAI and that's good enough for me. Good Anime = Profit ( self knowing profit that is, not company, although company do earn on it too )

OR
You can know the name of every anime company and get dissapointed and dissapointed over bad stuff they make because you don't like it - just like movie producers. They announce a movie, then it sucks. And that's the reason why I object when it comes to know the importance of whom made what.
As long as the anime is good, I'm happy.

Good Anime = Profit ( self knowing profit that is, not company, although company do earn on it too ) SPOILERS AHEAD: In Macross DYRL, Hikaru still chose Misa. It is merely a very (VERY) condensed version of the TV series with beautiful visuals (especially for its time). I still love it and own the DVD as part of my collection. I really recommend you check out Gunbuster (the first one) too if you liked Macross (character designs, relationships, story in general). And at only 6 episodes, shouldn't be hard to find the time to watch it ^^ Going back to Evangelion, I suggest you see the whole thing. Judging the book by it's cover is like deciding the whole Ys franchise (and Falcom in general) is the worst piece of CR-AP ever made by man because the earlier games have a "bump" battle system.

Of coruse Hikaru takes Misa, the sweet heart and not the shedog Minmei <.< When I get MOAR harddrive space, yes. Then Gunbuster may be downloaded. I believe something like this happened: Eventually, I will. The pengivine in Ep 2 however bugged me out of the seriousness of the show. Still good show, but not this " ZOMG BEST SHOW EVAH OF MECHAZ AND IVE ONLI ZEEN NGE NOT GUNPARADE NOR GUNDAM NOR MACROSS NOR ANY OTHER AND NEVAH WILL BWE HE HE HEHE" Like I hear way to many youth say about Naruto which is a overly overrated anime just like NGE. Sure it's good, but not THAT good.

I think the penguin disappears by the second half when the atmosphere becomes darker and the story starts moving at a faster pace.
The first half is merely getting to know the characters, their relationships, and their struggles.
And please don't put NGE in the same category as Naruto nor should you classify it as mecha anime for it is more like an experimental genreless show that Gainax is known for - something that's admired by those willing to see the artistic/expressive potential of anime rather than those of the more mainstream crowd.
Do you want another Love Hina? Or would you give Kare Kano a shot?
It's a show that makes you think in a way that it enlightens you rather than just make you guess "who dun it?".
Oh and yeah, I also recommend you check out the Patlabor movies - considered the "think man's anime" They're sequels of the OVA but they do stand on their own ^^

Hey man, you dissin' Love Hina?! I love that show, personally! It's probably one of my favorite anime, in fact. Kare Kano is good too, but Love Hina is better. Better characters, and a better overarching plotline. That wasn't the point I was making. Love Hina is a great show - please don't misunderstand. I am talking about the artistic liberties Gainax did with Kare Kano that not many.... or probably nobody else does that I was talking about Shame that the athor decided to cancel the project - unaware of the masterpiece Gainax turned the story into^^ Probably the other show they felt restricted on was Nadia - being forced to loosely remake Castle in the Sky. But it is indeed unfortunate that, highly artistic I may consider Gainax be, their works are definitely not for everyone. Again, they're more on experimentation - kinda like independent films. And yeah, budget can't stop their creativity XD hmmmm..... Treasure:video games <> Gainax:anime

Ok, let's just get ONE THING STRAIGHT here now: A show that includes mecha, what's main theme in the serie is Mechas: * Is classified as mecha * Is a mecha * Can of course, have subgenres - But main theme is still Mecha. And let's do this, a Google search: Oh, what is that? Isn't that one of those EVA units? Two even! The opening theme knwon as Zankoku na tenshi no teize - or as in english - Cruel Angel Thesis - which we can draw the connection of the so-called Angels they fight in the serie using said EVA units ~ MECHAS. And your saying " This is not a Mecha"... I say: You need to actually WATCH the whole anime and not just the drama scenes. As Wikipedia states, it's genres is " Drama, Mecha[/u], Psychological, Science Fiction[/i]" - Can you see the line " MECHA" there? It is a Mecha whatever or not you like it, it is one. If you still claim it isn't, then I can claim that Gunparade March is strictly a Drama serie, no mecha at all. On that Note, Gunparade March does have tons of drama in it, but it is STILL a Mecha.

You know that one part where Misato and Koichi are doing it and she totally gets off, completely off camera but still obvious what is going on? Not to sound perverse but that is one of the most brilliant pieces of erotic film I've ever seen. No visual, slight audial, indirect at best, but extremely passionate. BRILLIANT I SAY, BRILLIANT! Apologies, I'm so drunk I can't see straight right now. Whoopee!
