I recently got my hands on a copy of Ys Eternal Complete, which I'm loving so far, but I have a problem: The opening video doesn't play. I can hear the audio while the video should be playing, and I can skip past the opening and begin the game, but no video; just a black screen.
When I tried opening the video files the game installed on my computer using Windows Media Player, I got a message saying "Error downloading codec," which leads me to believe that I'm missing some vital video codec.
Does anybody have any suggestions?

I am not sure. Do you have the latest Direct X (9.0c) and the latest Windows Media Player (10). Also, update your vga drivers. (If you have a Geforce card, 66.93 are the newest) Links: www.microsoft.comwww.nvidia.com

I do have the latest DirectX version, tho I don't have WMP10. Microsoft's web site says WMP10 only works on Windows XP, whereas I'm using 2k.
I didn't think of the video drivers, though. *slaps forehead* They should be up to date, but it couldn't hurt to check...
Edit: D'oh. In an attempt to fix this problem, I re-installed Ys Complete, and now I'm not getting any music! >.<

Try using that program in the Ys1_win folder, I don't remember what it was called, but it lets you choose between 22 and 44 khz music. If you're using the cd version, make sure you're using 22 khz, if you have the dvd version, make sure you use 44 khz.

Ah. Thanks for that. Music is one of the most important elements of the Ys games in my experience, so it was... not as fun to be playing without it.
But as for my video problem... I checked my DirectX, which was up-to-date, and updated my video drivers, but I still can't see the opening. I tried the "Openingold.exe," and that gave me a video, but the audio was all messed up when I did that. It was very odd, as Alt-tabbing out of the window made the music play correctly for a moment.

Ah! Many, many thanks, Nightwolve. I'll install that codec right away! And as a side note, I am using your translation patch, and I love it so far!

OK, I managed to a copy of Ys I & II Complete (CD-ROM version), did a full installation (Windows XP), but when I start the game, I lose sound when the opening cutscene starts when I begin a new game. however, when I save a game & load it, I get sound. Does anyone know how to fix this bug at all?
PS... Just ahead of time, I'm using onboard audio instead of a sound card if that helps.
