Even though I have been a diehard fan of the Ys series, it really didn't begin for me until Ys 3 hit the SNES several years ago. This means that even though I have finished a good chunk of the localized Ys titles in the US, I have never, ever even scratched the surface of the first game other than run around town on an emulated NES version. To tell you the truth, I really can't get into it on the NES version or the SMS version in the slightest. I know there are a billion versions of the first three games, and I'd really like to experience the series at the begining. I was jankety and bored last night, since I'm currently on vacation this week, and found a torrent for the PC versions of Ys I&II eternal with the patch, but, not being a ROM genius since I buy everything that I'm into for support reasons, I have no idea how to make it work with the CD burning and all of those issues . Is there any truly great way to experience the begining of this series in a somewhat updated version?
I've been frustrated trying to find links to sites selling the game and/or translation patches, but I keep running into brick walls and programming issues. I'd love to play the game on the PCE, but those things cost more than a PS2 these days. So if anyone has any advice on how I should play the original title, please send all help this direction.

There are a few different routes you could try. You could go to the downloads section (if you have access), or you could try buying Ys I & II Complete (whch I've heard is a little better than eternal) from an import shop (see the gamers forum for the thread on imports). I don't know anything about torrents so I'm afraid I can't help you there. My advice is to buy Ys I Complete from HimeyaShop.com and use the patch if you want it in english. Happy playing!

Falcom Classics and Falcom Classics II contains YsI and II on Sega Saturn. Pretty good (and cheap) games.

Get a copy of Ys book I and II on ebay for the TurboCD. Cheap! There are always tons of copies available on there. Then get MagicEngine (pay for it, its worth it) and play till you croak. Story-wise Ys Complete is best version. Music-wise, the grammy goes to the TurboCD version. And the few spoken parts contain some of the best videogame voice-overs I've ever heard. The opening bit with the narrator is sweet. and so relaxing... "Ys, the ideal utopia."
