Woo! I just finished my first Ys game - Ys Complete. What an incredibly enjoyable experience I played it on normal and found it to be just right. I don't like my games to be a walkover, but on the other hand I don't like to be smacked about the head 20 times before I manage to do it right. The last boss seemed a bit random and frantic but I managed to beat it on the second attempt (after I realised I should be wearing the silver stuff not the top-end stuff). I really enjoyed the whole Darm Tower section. Usually the prospect of traipsing around a dungeon or tower in an RPG has me reaching for the quit button (painful memories of Xenogears), but this was nice and linear while still giving a bit of a puzzly challenge. I think the hardest bit of the entire game was that bat boss, because the timing had to be so perfect. Everything else was pitched just right - maybe a couple of failures to get your bearings then a good boshing. I just love how fast-paced the whole thing was. Everything just kept motoring on, no faffing about. There wasn't a single moment in the game where I was bored of running about or talking to people. My only regret is that I didn't get around to installing the alternative soundtrack until I was already in Darm Tower. Oh well, that's just one more reason to play through again in future! All in all a really great little game. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into Ys II Complete... and Felghana... and both versions of IV... and...

YsI is the best one of 'em all in my opinion. This is a list of MUST PLAYS:
YsI - X68000 YsI COMPLETE YsII - PC-8801 (this is the BEST version of YsII, in my opinion) YsII COMPLETE YsIII - Mega Drive/Genesis YsIII - PS2 YsIV - The Dawn of Ys & YsIV: Mask of the Sun YsV - SFC and YsV EXPERT - SFC YsVI - PC and PS2 Ysf - PC
I intentionally excluded Ys I-II on PCE, because I'm not the biggest fan of that game.

Good luck on your quest. I hope you have a great time enjoying these games, there really is nothing else like the Ys series out there.

YsI is the best one of 'em all in my opinion. This is a list of MUST PLAYS: ... YsII - PC-8801 (this is the BEST version of YsII, in my opinion) ... I might be wrong here, since it was ages ago... but the PC-8801 version of Ys II, doesn't that one have the horrible software 8*8 pixel scrolling? I am a sucker for smooth scrolling. I detest playing any Ys game, especially the Windows ones (since the console versions are what they are and not much can be done about occasional slowdowns since there is no way of upgrading or configurating the systems), unless I am running on a setup which manages to give perfectly smooth srolling with no noticable slowdowns, ever... So, I guess... my point is, that if the game has the software 8*8 pixel scrolling, it will automatically place itself lower on my list of favourite Ys II versions.
