Yeah, it was one of the things I tested for my Ys I Complete speedrun. It's been a while since I've last played the game in English, but after completing the events with Feena/Jevah, I believe Goban says something along the lines of Darm Tower being too dangerous without the proper equipment, the most important being the Silver Sword (but you still need the shield and armor).

In order to enter the Darm Tower, you need the Silver Sword. In absolutely every Ys I version in existence.
Also because you CAN'T damage Dark Fact without it in certain versions. There are also certain versions, in certain difficulties, that allows you to damage him with (an)other sword(s), but it's blatantly impossible to win.

Actually I think it is impossible. I just tried it in Complete, and the best I was able to do was get 20% of his health off, and I basically ran out floor space. So I think it's a matter of number of hits vs actual damage. Which version of the game does the floor not disappear, is it NES, or SMS? That might be only version where is technically possible, but that games are so difficult.
The reason I posed the question is because I was curious if the chests in darm tower were actually your equipment, of if they are set drops. But I guess it's impossible to find out without being able to modify your location.

The floor does not disappear in the NES version, in both fights. However, both forms are completely immune to anything other than the Silver Sword, so this is a moot point.

HOLY SHIT O_____O I knew the NES version of Ys I was special, judging by how far I had got, but I wasn't expecting... THIS. ***K *gets in a must- playfinish-NES-version-ASAP state* Awesome!

Second form ain't really nothing special, aside from having a kickass final tune. I would totally love a remix of that, it's one of my favorite Ys tunes, even if it's unofficial.

The NES version is also unique in the sense that it's the only version of Ys I (I think) with an epilogue. I haven't played the old versions in a while though, so might be wrong. But I don't remember being able to leave Darm Tower in a in any other game.

? He doesn't fly to the sky in that version? Weird. It's also unique that whatever you wear can't be seen in Adol's sprite AKA the sprite never changes (you always look unarmed etc.) Map is very different (the field), there are some extra items (a fairy giving you some cane?!) etc.. Different versions are cool.

XD What's up with the exaggeration?
... Hm, I recalled something wrong then. xD I think it's that equipment won't appear if you equip it separately (that is, you HAVE TO equip at least a sword, shield and armor. If one of them, is missing, it won't show. If you have a sword and shield, but don't have an armor, Adol's sprite will be without sword or shield).
... Though correct me in case I'm wrong. xD

? He doesn't fly to the sky in that version? Weird. This is probably considered a spoiler sooo. He does, but instead of using the monocle to read the book of fact, you are warped outside of Jeva Tobahs house. However you have to enter her house and have her read the book for it to go into the typical ending. There is nothing stopping you from going anywhere in the game though. Althugh every NPC, including the roda tree will have the same line of text.]
