I just finished the TurboDuo version of Ys II and I have to say it was a little disappointing, partly because I had heard several people write that it was way better than the first game. I actually found it less fun; while it was interesting, it abandoned a couple Ys traditions. It didn't have a world map, and what's worse is that running into enemies wasn't even the main weapon. Most of the bosses could only be killed with fire magic, which was incredibly lame. I didn't find the music and the characters quite as memorable either. And Solomon Shrine was very confusing compared to Darm Tower.
I will give it credit, however, for changing things up a bit after Ys I, and also for having all the cool tie ins to the first game near the end. The game started to feel like classic Ys in the last segment.
I really loved Ys Complete, so I'm hoping Ys II Complete will make me like the second game more.

If you ask me, I think YsII is one of the best. Possibly even the best. No, wait. I think YsI is the best. YsII is definitely #2, I don't find YsII, IV or V that much fun (compared to #1 and 2). YsVI was fun the first time, but I don't enjoy replaying it (something that I LOVE to do with YsI. I have definitely played through it at least 20 times.)

Ys II is definitely the best Ys game IMO especially the Turbo Grafx version......the music is way better than any other Ys game ever......BUT......the game is not as good alone......Ys I should be with it ......the Turbo Grafx version is the best game ever IMO......just an opinion

It abandoned Ys traditions? How does a game abandon a tradition if it's the second game in the series?
Oh, and the reason you'll see tie-ins to the first game is that Ys 1 & 2 are kind of 2 parts for the same game. I think of Ys in a lot of the same ways that I think of Arc the Lad in that respect.

And Solomon Shrine was very confusing compared to Darm Tower. Actually, Solomon Shrine is one of the reasons Ys II is my favorite. I love the huge labyrinthine aspects of it. I was hoping Ys VI's final dungeon would be as large, but sadly it didn't even come close. I still think Ys I and Ys II should be considered and looked at as one game though.

Ys II expands and improves on every aspect of Ys I. It's a brilliant second part (rather than sequel) with a superb climax and has the best music of the entire series. Without a doubt my favourite chapter.

I haven't played Ys II yet, but Magic hell yeah, blasty blasty awesomeness. At least i won't have to run into everything. Anyway, I'm still waiting for NightWolve, yeah. But I'm looking forward to it, it's probably just as good first.

I love the fire magic in YsII Eternal / YsII COMPLETE. You can charge it up (a lot) and it gets extremely powerful. Especially with the Hawk Idol.

Well that's nice that they improved the magic in Ys II Complete.
As for Ys II abandoning series tradition - fair enough, I suppose there aren't any traditions when you're only on the second installment in the series. Still, everyone talks about Ys I, II, and IV being the Ys games with the classic run-into-enemies combat, and yet running isn't even the main weapon in Ys II. Fire magic in Ys II on the Turbo Duo is really, really lame.

You use the fire magic quite a lot in YsIV too (The Dawn of Ys).

George considering you're commenting on the turbo duo version, I agree with you. The 2nd half of the game didn't really compare to the first half. In fact I didn't enjoy most versions of Ys II. But Ys II Eternal is every bit as good, if not better than Ys I eternal. I reccomend playing that if you haven't already.

I guess I prefer the repetitiveness that Darm Tower's simple design gives it to the confusion that results from the sprawling Solomon Shrine. But Darm Tower was a lot better in the Ys Eternal remake (even though they didn't eliminate the backtracking - when's Falcom going to modernise in that area?)and I'm sure they'll do the same in Ys II Eternal.

I played on the Turbografx 16 back when it come out in the US. So, to me the two games are one giant game and originally I don't see much difference. I saw it as a large continuum.
So, I wasn't disappointed by Ys II at all. Ys III was my biggest disappointment.

I vote for Ys 1 the best of all Ys. (And the best game too lol)
Ys 1 got à special atmosphere, very dark. I mean the beat of terror and palace of destruction.
Ys 2 is a little kindly. lilia + lava village and the talking monsters in solomon shrine gave a cool atmosphere.
have u saw any Oacrott or Reboll spoke?? They are demons! Bloody demons, like nubrows and griel in Rasteen mine.
Ys one got a very dramatic atmosphere, and for that, is THE Ys.

In the anime, Ys 2 is darker... and has better animation! The Ys 1 anime is very similar to the actual game, but the Ys 2 anime is alot different from the game.

I'd say Ys II (TurboGrafx) is probably my favorite video game ever, so no, not disappointing at all. Ys III was a bit of a letdown, but I'm going through Ys VI right now and it's making up for it (haven't played IV or V).

I have always loved Ys II, especially the Turbo Grafx/ PC Engine version. Luckily, I got it when it first came out in the U.S. So ahead of it's time, a legendary classic.

i did not find Ys II disapointing at all, my first experience of the game was when it was first released back on the Turbo Grafx Cd so i got a chance to enjoy it in its prime. it is hard for me to rate this game without rating Book I as well because they have always felt like 1 epic game to me. but i feel this game is one of the best RPGs made.

It's a toss-up between I and II. Both are so memorable to me. The music is great in both. Ys II felt much much longer. I can breeze through Ys I in a few hours. Ys II takes me a few sitdowns to get through. I honestly really can't choose just based on that. I love them both the same

yeah, same here, they both are really awesome games and I can't find myself enjoying III as much as the first 2. I think II was slighty better, cause there were a lot of places that you go through, instead of only the mines and the reaaaly huge Darm Tower. So yea ^^
