I prefer Mask of the sun. The dawn of Ys never appealed to me, I don't know why, really. Plus, the resolution is so low in The dawn of Ys, and the "frame" around the screen is so large so nothing fits on the screen! This is very strange and extremely annoying. The gameplay isn't that good either, plus, the game is too slow.

Ys 4 Dawn of Ys is not in English yet however I think someone is working on it......as for the emulator you can go here ------------------> www.magicengine.com/uk_index.htmlIt is the best emulator out there that plays almost every Turbo Duo game, and PC Engine game flawlessly.....there is even a full screen mode for your tv. You have to download 0.9.9 beta 5 demo and then pay $16 for a key to unlock the demo but it is definitely worth it. As for playing Ys 4 you should buy a full version on Ebay ....expect to spend $25 - $50 for it......then use a walkthrough which is located here ------------> www.rpgamer.com/games/Ys/ys4doy/info/ys_4_w.txtI hope this helps....and if you get stuck I can help you!

I've only played Ys4 Mask of the Sun and I thought it was good. It felt like Ys1 and 2 (unlike Ys 3). I played it with a translation patch... I could upload it but there're no upload button on here *hint hint, seldane* I would give Dawn of Ys a try... when it's in English

I swear to you....Ys 4 Dawn of Ys is 10 times better than mask of the sun..... even with the walkthrough it is excellent....the walkthrough spoils the story a little but it is fun, the game is amazing and the music is the best! when i reached bosses I wouldnt read the walkthrough on how to beat them though..... I wanted to do some things on my own. But i am still awaiting an English patch or something

walkthrough spoils the story?!?!? what are you talking about? lol I play almost ALL my games with a walkthrough... You try to play something like Thief without a walkthrough... It's a fun game but my goodness, some missions are scary in that game!

I did not use a walkthrough for YsIV: The dawn of Ys. I am so used to playing japanese RPGS so the text isn't really a problem for me, it's quite nice to be able to only enjoy the action and ignore what they are saying.

Mask of the Sun is actually the original project planned by Falcom, which they never came to release themselves. When Hudson contacted them to participate in a specific version for the PC Engine, they simply licensed the original project to Tonkin House and then directly went on with The Dawn of Ys. Thus the latter is what you could call a totally remade Director's Cut of the former, and both are different enough to justify their own interest.

Ys IV The Dawn of Ys is for me definitively the best Ys ever ! Big hopes for "Ys 4 Eternal" on PC. This PC-Engine version had incredible "spirit" with perfect sounds. Obviously, now, the new Ys 6 has technical advance because recent game but Ys 4 The Dawn of Ys is still my favourite !

I agree. I feel that the Dawn of Ys was better than Mask of the Sun in just about every way. Sure, the graphics were lower res, but they were more colorful and better animated. The sound is obviously inarguable. Even the level and scenario design seemed superior to me. The storyline felt like it had a larger, more epic scope. DoY had the better magic system, and it had classic Ys hit detection too.
Oh well, that's not to be down on MotS. I just felt it was more of an above-average game, and not pure genious like DoY.

I love the fact that the goddesses are SPOILER SPACE relatives of the Eldeenians, that's just cool, instead of them being mysterious. I like explanations. I think I'm halfway thru MOTS right now, the magic system is....intersting, but, ultimatly, I think it stinks. I also don't like the fact that you can go diagonally........unless it's my controller!? And last time I checked, you can do that in DOY. I thought Mask of the Sun was a little lacking, myself. Not a bad game, by any means, but a little unpolished. Some aspects I found annoying (like the near-pointless magic). It does seem to be considered the "official" continuation of the series, though... And plot-wise, The Dawn of Ys takes a few liberties I'm not so fond of (its description of the origins of the Goddesses, for instance).

There is no match ! The Dawn of Ys is the best ! Story: the explanation about the Eldeenians is very interesting and match with the "Ys Spirit". Music: OK, I don't have to tell which won Screenplay: The wonderful cutscenes involves the player deeper in the game Graphics: The chara-design of DoY is so great tha the characters in MotS seems to be drawn with feet !! And the textures of the SNES are too "Heavy". Ys IV The Dawn of Ys is really the true and defenitive version at this day !

If I can ever scrounge up the hardware and software to play the Dawn of Ys, I'm sure it would be a fantastic experience. Mask of the Sun was not a bad Ys game, but then again, I'm so fond of every Ys title I've ever got my hands on that I never complain. From all the media, reviews, and information I've collected from mulitple sources, everything points to the Dawn of Ys quite possibly being one of the best games ever in the series. I did find Mask of the Sun, however, to be quite enjoyable. In fact, since I played it a few years ago over the course of a few days, it left a great impression on me. I don't know if it was the time period and/or the environment I happened to be in at the time, but it's still one of my favorite games to date.
