Newb here as well. I got this game about a week or so ago, and have been loving it very much. It's even pulling me away from my animal crossing and that is tough to do.

*remembers something* Does anyone know if the first press of the game is the same one that's included in the Limited Edition version with all the goodies n' stuff? Just wanted to know, and by the way, the "special" sound cd that comes with the First press edition of the game isn't all THAT special, only about the first five tracks are actual Music tracks. The rest are voice acting and "sound effects" *sarcastic* Ooooohh..

I started it the day I received my copy. Finished it twice so far (PC and PS2 versions) on my PS2. I really like the new sprites, and the Alma trials are quite fun (though very short).

[quote author=Doom I really like the new sprites, and the Alma trials are quite fun (though very short). [/quote] Fun?? Fun? ? I've been stuck on the first trial for about 2 hours trying to make them damn jumps in the second room... Damn lousy "Dash Jump".....

you dont really need dash jump that badly in alma's trial... and i thought it was fun... a tad easy but easy level ups or free money or emels yes... the dash jump is EEEEEVIL!!!! I still can't figure it out how it works. Stupid Eldian Orb!! Glad you dont really need it if you max out the sword!

Given that it was one of the more challenging things in the game, I came to appreciate the dash jump later on once I could do it consistently enough. Oh, but believe me... I knew the music to the Ruins of Amnesia so well by the end of it that even amnesia wouldn't make me forget. (Read: I spent hours in there)

I got it! I love the music, the play control is good, the graphics are the best for Ys to date. That dash jump can be a pain can't it? Just imagine trying it on a pc with keyboard and mouse (shudders at the thought). That windsword can be tricky don't you think? It feels like every time I get the combo down the game changes the button pressing speed, it makes the dash jump feel easy in comparison. I had to do the cheat code to watch the anime sceens over the cg, the anime just seemed more fitting for a "throwback" style game. No complaints though, I was just really glad it was included.

The dash jump is ridiculously easy to perform with a keyboard. I imgine it being much much harder with a controller.

Sorry, no way to switch items during a boss fight that I know of. I've read that it's not possible, but there may be a gameshark code to allow you to.

The Ark boss playing in hard mode is much more difficult than Normal. I also took a couple tries to beat it. I found the best way was to not destroy each color sphere one at a time. The reason being is that each sphere you kill makes the ark laser around faster. I just got all the spheres to really low power, then kill them one by one. In my opinion, that manjumaru boss in the ruins should be the final boss.

I got my PS2 version a while ago... but ive been holding back untill ive played all of the classic titles i possibly can. Yeah... im a n00b... but I did quite a bit of research on the series before buying AoN... and I was even more excited to go back and try these games i had missed out on in the early days... so i've picked up Ys I and II on NES, and III and IV on SNES (best i could do...) since AoN's release on PS2. im currently on IV Mask of the Sun, and after that i'll finaly be playing AoN (yeah, i know about the codes to make it as PC-version-like as i possibly can... i'll deffinately use them) i'd love to play V too (even though it's unlike other Ys) but there is no good english patch yet, as you probably know, and i want to get a hold of Dawn of Ys... somehow. I'm also gonna try to get as many of the good versions of the older games as possible. ive been learning Japanese for some time now, so i'll import some games only the fortunate (those in the east) have been able to get their greedy paws on.... that was kinda my intro post, i guess.. PS: damn, i love synth rock

Have you played Ys Eternal for the PC? I sure hope so... NightWolve made awesome translations for the PC remakes of Ys 1 & 2.

I got the PS2 version today! I can't wait until September 16 when the PAL version will be released. I imported it instead. Man, this version beats the PC version by a long shot!

Yep, I picked up Konami PS2 port the very day it came out in the USA. I loved the game, though I absolutely loathed the port. Konami spent way too much time and money making unnecessary changes and additions. I suppose the Trials of Alma were OK, and it gave Konami somewhere to place parts of the new soundtrack they were going to foolishly replace the classic soundtrack with. Thank g-d the fan outcry got them to change their minds.
Hated the CGI cutscenes (used a code to restore the anime scenes), hated the English voice acting (used a code to swap 'em out with the Jp VA, which mercifully I cannot understand), and I still shudder everytime I see the 3D models... having much appreciation for the original "chibi" classic-style Ys sprites. The severely degraded graphics and textures didn't help either.
But, they gave me an English version of Ys VI, and for that they'll always have my support and thanks. I wonder if the PSP version is coming out in the US (since, by all reports, the PS2 version tanked in sales), as I hear it's supposed to be MUCH more faithful to the original PC version.
