This month's Official US Sony Playstation magazine has a review on the PSP version. They gave it a 3/5 rating which I think it's alright.
In the article (more like the paragraph), it said that the PSP of Ys: Ark of Napishtim is more suited on the PSP and is better then the ps2 version. But it also said that the PSP still lacks a game that identify with it. Ys is a decent game but doesn't step up to the plate for THAT title. Also said that you shouldn't run out to buy a PSP for this game...

The game works amazingly as a portable title, but they're flat-out wrong in saying that it's a superior port when compared to the PS2 game. This isn't even an opinion, but straight up fact. The PSP version was significantly more butchered than even the PS2 game. From graphics to controls to load times to framerate, the PSP version utterly fails where the PS2 version (mostly) succeeded. For the record, I played the US version, which was already slightly improved over the PSP Jp release.
To be clear, I own, played through, and beat the US versions of the PS2 and PSP games.

The PSP version is great in that it has all new minigames that are not included in the PS2 version. Some of these minigames are quite fun. On the downside, the load times are slower, framerate can be unstable, and the voice work is completely cut from the game. If your on the go the PSP version is very enjoyable but the PS2 version is the definitive experience.

Well, I preferred the crappy Alma's Trials from the PS2 version over the awful minigames in the PSP game. So losing Alma's Trials but gaining the mini games was not a good trade off, IMHO.

I'd have to buy a PSP and find out... I'll do that... eventually... lol While The Alma's Trails is a nice Konami's edition to the PS2... it did not really enhanced that game that much except if you need experience or gold or the gems... then that comes in handy. I would've prefered all the unlockable extras in other game. It would be nice to see a gallery of new and old Ys game or interviews like "The Making of Ys" or maybe I'm asking too much?? lol

Except, what does Konami know about the making of Ys? Nothing, really. And I'm pretty damn sure that if Nihon Falcom was involved with the PS2 and PSP games, they wouldn't have turned out has bad as they did.

I am extremely downhearted to hear that the PS2 version is considered bad, as that game rocked my world in many wonderous ways. =(
What makes the PC version so much more superior? I mean, there are some slideshows in place of CG and different sprites, to my knowledge. The former's window dressing, and I find PS2's sprites fit much better.

The PC version has higher framerate (depends on your computer though). Other than that, I don't find the PC version better in any way. People are just comparing the two. The PS2 version is a perfectly good game as it is.

For an Ys title though, it's still pretty "blah". I thought it was a solid game, but there are things I would definately have done differently.

The PSP version is crappy. Too much loading screens. It's even loading for like 2 secs when you get a level... How can it be worse than that ?

Five second loading upon getting a level.

Compared to the original, it's a subpar game, but on it's own as a PSP game, the only real complaint would be the load times. I actually found Dash Slashing to be easier on the PSP than the PC. >.> And The Gauntlet minigame is just unadulterated slaughtering goodness.
How do you get the last two vids on the media player, though? x.X

Best training ground is grass. Step, stop, slash. You should hear Adol make one step on the grass, a silence just as long as the step sound effect, and then he should lung forward about three body lengths.

from the booklet... it looks like you press the X + O on the play station controller. Adol *looks* like he jumps slightly higher but I dont see him jump any further. Why? Because later in the game in the basement level where you jump this long platform and you fight what some people say is the hardest boss (i dont remember the name or the item)... I always fall short. I did it more times then I can remember and I have never ever made it onto that platform... Just thinking about it is annoying me!

You're doing a jumping slash. I wish I had my own copy of Napishtim for PC so I could do demo videos to show how it looks...
Step, stop, slash. Another tip: When practicing, equip Blirante and hold down the slash. If you charge, you're doing it wrong. If you lunge forward with one strike, no charging up the firewave, you're doing it properly.

Indeed. Adol will jump crazy far from standing.

Still talking about that dash jump move? Believe me when I say this, you WILL notice when you're doing it correctly. The key word there is WHEN you do it correctly...
