The Zemeth Sanctum is indeed a most pretty tune! >:0 I like that, The Pirate Ship, Mighty Obstacle, Ruins of Amnesia and Release of the Far West Ocean. Edit! Best town theme Falcom's ever done, though, is Puck Village from Zwei!!. God, I love that song. (: <3!!

Release of the Far West Ocean's vocal is great stuff. I didn't groove so much on the vocal of Mighty Obstacle... but hey.
Cumulus occasionally makes me cringe, other times puts me to sleep, other times I guess I like it....
...And oh yeah, Zwei!! soundtrack = WIN. I love that music. XD

My dear friend has went nuts for Mighty Obstacle when he heard it.
Also, The Depth Napishtim is the most final boss-sounding tune that I have heard in ages. It's also bloody good. And Zemeth Sanctuary is pretty. Defend! And Escape! is also pleasing to my ears; but I loved that whole scene so perhaps I am biased.

The battle with The Ark of Napishtim was probably one of the most boring final boss fight I have ever played in ANY game. >:/ Well, the second part especially.
If the game had the Mask of Eyes, I might have used it for that last segment just to make things more interesting.

I actually found the music for the actual final boss fight to be quite underwhelming... not to mention the fact that the boss fight itself was extremely uninspired. I love The Depth Napishtim, myself, but mostly because it was such a departure. It would've been difficult for them to have topped Ernst, so I appreciated the new direction. That song NEEDS to be done on a piano, though. We -need- a version of The Depth Napishtim on piano with accompaniment.

I grant that The Depth Napishtim was a fairly unique theme....
...but we need Ernst done in better synth samples first. ;_; Whatever guitar sample they use in.. well, EVERY AoN tune that has such... just makes me cringe, even when the melodies are great.

Ys VI has an OST that at first BITTERLY disappointed me... but since has grown on me... a lot.
Favorites include (in no particular order): Release of the Far West Ocean (so OMG!!!) Mighty Obstacle Ultramarine Deep (half annoying, half BEST SONG EVER!!) Windslash Steps Mountain Zone Ruins of Amnesia Large Whirlpool Receding ~ Romun NAval Fleet Invasion Defend and Escape The Ark of Napishtim Revival ~ Large Whirlpool Restored The Ruined City ~ Kishgal Armored Bane Erunst (so awesome) Black Ark Unveiled (so trippy) Crevia's Chamber (Konami)

......I remember the battle with Ernst. Granted, it really was just a few days ago I bothered to try beating on him, and getting miserably spanked around the playing field by his pink (!) magic.
I'm so very behind on Napishtim.... haven't even SEEN the Ark yet.

I remember fighting Armored Bane, Ernst, and the Ark pretty well (beat the game in summer 2005, i think. right after the PS2 release, whenever that was). I remember the music for Armored Bane, although definitely not as good, getting more a lot more pumped up than Ernst's theme. I do like Ernst's theme the best out of the final 3 battles, but Armored Bane's was a lot more fast paced. I remember wanting to kick his Ernst's ass for killing Geis. The Depth Napishtim sounded pretty epic for the final theme, in my opinion, but mostly for the part where it slows down and that slight "choir track" comes in, right after the first part. I found the battle pretty good, actually. It was different from fighting a monster or evil human character, and i kind of found it a little more tough/fun than Ernst (and for some reason, after the first 2 battles, I wasn't expecting to actually fight the ark it's self). Still, these don't compare to some other Ys boss battles for me, especially music-wise. A Great Ordeal still destroys everything.

I think Sound Team J.D.K has the same problem as Uematsu Nobuo for his FF stuff up to FFX where he kept using dinky samples from ye olden days. I'm glad he's moved on to incorporate more orchestral and natural sounding instruments since. Still, I guess it's JDK's style to keep some old school elements for their Ys compositions. I guess they should just be more careful of what samples to use though. :E And wyrdwad, it IS blasphemy that you don't recall the Ernst battle! I remember it well since I enjoyed spamming lightning on the homunculi to hit as many targets as I can in the fight. XD

It seems like they've smartened up about it in the last two Ys games at least... as well as in most of their others (Legend of Heroes, Xanadu Next, and so on). I just don't know WHAT happened there with Napishtim's music sampling. And as an aside, I second the Uematsu statement.

And for the record, FF6 and FF7 are vastly overrated (wasn't a big fan of X, either). you have excellent taste... oh wait, I already mentioned that before. your favorite is FF8? (if i remember correctly) I used to argue to death that the whole series is vastly overrated, but I guess the series is for a different gaming market that I just don't feel to be a part of. wow, this thread really goes in quite a few different tangents...

FFVI and VII were fun when I first played them. *Not* the best ever. I have since tried to play both of them again and cannot tolerate either one of them. X was just silly. VIII was okay but too angsty. IX was my favorite of them all, aside from Final Fantasy IV. I'm currently about halfway through the DS FFIII and it's neat so far. Too many job classes. I don't generally like my RPG's this difficult. This is why my favorites tend to be games like Zelda or Ys.
I'm not even going to attempt to play FFXII or XIII or higher..
to stay on topic. There are 2 or 3 very memorable Ys VI songs, but most I wouldn't know their source if I heard them outside the game.

People like to harp on Uematsu for his music not being "as good as" older stuff. No, I just complain that they sound LIKE the older stuff. XD And yeah, I read somewhere that he didn't feel comfortable using other stuff or something. (Struggling on finding the correct terms here. ^^) But I'm glad he got over it and moved on to spiffy sounding music! :D Indeed they were! FFIV = <3

The only FF game I've really played is FFXII, and I LOVED it (one of my favorite games ever).
I've played FF3 (the real FF3) for a couple of hours a long time ago, don't remember anything of it. Other than that, I haven't touched the FF series.
Also, I love the music in Ys VI. Electronic > symphonic.

But I'm glad he got over it and moved on to spiffy sounding music! :D Well, he had nothing to do with FF12. Is the Blue Dragon soundtrack good? I've not had occasion to hear it yet. The Blue Dragon Soundtrack is something I'm ordering today! Can't wait to hear it, as I don't plan on getting an XBox 360 yet. I really like the Ys VI music, but something I did recently was use the Ys VI: The Return music in place of the originals. It's pretty fun to change it up now and then.

Well, Ys V qualifies as chip music. I love (almost any) chip music! I don't think it sounds particularly symphonic, even though it is sounds like they attempted to make it sound that way.

Well, he had nothing to do with FF12. Is the Blue Dragon soundtrack good? I've not had occasion to hear it yet. I wasn't referring to FFXII~ One of my fave hit-or-miss composers did that one! :DD What was more or less referring to was the pieces he did for FFXI and such.

Oh yes, finally finished off Ernst. And OH MY GOD does he have the LONGEST DYING SPEECH EVER. XD Was I not the only one just waiting for him to shut up and die already? The man was practically going into soliloquy!!

Ernst is cool enough to die exactly when he feels like, and not a moment sooner.
