The dungeons seem to grow more Linear with every Ys game... I am in the Fire Zone and so far the dungeons are ridiculously linear, even more so then Felghana... Do the upper floors become more maze like eventually? I remeber Darm Tower in Ys 1 was more of a maze...
What ever happened to the good old huge mazes... Like Solomon Shrine!!

I know. Hell, even in my walkthrough, I'm all like "just follow the path till the end". I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the graphical environment changed? I don't think that should have an affect on level size though.
I think only people like me with horrid short term memory that could even get LOST on any floor. Well, maybe not lost but just sort of forget where something is. :(

Neither of you have gotten to the Territory of the Silent Desert yet, I take it? (: To answer your question, soulmancer, yes, the floors get SIGNIFICANTLY more maze-like and awesome as you get further in. Don't worry, the linearity comes to an end quite shortly! -Tom AHEM! *points to sig* I actually got to the doors before the boss battle. :P Although I agree that the Silent Desert is less linear than the other sections, it's still easy to find your way around. Well, it was for me. ^^; I mean, after you get all the chests in the west room (from the goddess statue at the Desert's entrance point), you can cross that off your list as places to revisit. :B I think the center room becomes like that soon afterward too. Then things get back to normal in terms of straight-forwardness. I dunno. It was still pretty "one-way" to me; maybe just more places to go and more spaced out. It's nothing like those caves/dungeons when every damn doorway looked the same and lead to you a similar looking area each time. :P And ugh. The shrine and the subterranean canal in Ys II had me going in circles. :P

Even the mirror part is much simpler than the Ys I version.

Pfft so what? I'm glad it's more action-based. That means I don't spend hours (slight exaggeration!) trying to find my way through a single area, fighting the same monsters over and over again. Instead, each "room" in each "area" has been given its own feel, so each room is its own entity rather than just another part of a maze.
This way suits the style of the game much more, where (game-play-wise) the concentration is on how you deal with the territory and monsters rather than on how you find your way about.

Buttonmashing in Devil May Cry (1 or 3, anyhow) will get you killed... Hear hear. ^^/ Actually, it's more like my reflexes are poor. ;o;~ I CANNOT do the Special Mission with the Enigmas (defeating them all without getting hit once) in DMC3 for the life of me. :P

My navigation skills in any game generally suck in ways almost beyond human comprehension.
That being said- I did find Origin less challenging (ahaha...) to navigate, but I didn't think it a FLAW in the game. I think the linearity is more a side effect of the attempt to make some variety in the dungeon design. Making stuff look pretty and look different or the like allows people with non-sucktastic memories to recall landmark points and thus not get so lost. In ye olde games of mazes, you had some tiles and walls and... not much else, I guess.
Linearity is fiiiine with me. Mazes just get bloody annoying before long if you can't find your way around the same set of tunnels or rooms for a few hours. =P

Heh didn't even realise there was a game for that, but it already sounds CRAP. (And that's because it's frrom SWIII, not because it's linear -_-) I still can't work out whether you intended to insult me lol But nothing wrong with that kind of game. Just look at Chaos Engine, Mercs, Commando... YsO isn't anywhere near as linear as those. How is it any more linear than 90% of all games that have ever existed? Just because you can't easily get lost, doesn't take anything away from the game at all.

I don't think linearity's bad. I really hate running around and around trying to remember where to go. I still get lost in Solomon Shrine, even thought I played the game a zillion times. I'm all for unconplicated dungeons in rpg.
