I don't know how many people play with the keyboard instead of a game controller, but I have a minor issue with the keyboard that hinders me a bit. I have the same issue with YsF -- it's the same engine, after all. (I haven't tried the PC version of Napishtam, which I got from Falcom's special offer -- just the PS2 version. I can't read any Japanese, so I'm waiting for a translation on that one.) Anyway, the issue is with pressing/holding multiple keys. Specifically, if I'm charging an attack ('C' key) while running around, I find that I can't jump ('X') if I'm running left/pressing the left arrow key. However, it works just fine to the right. Again, this happens in YsO and YsF. Also, with YsO (but not YsF), the game turns on the Num Lock and won't let me turn it off. Since I can only get these games to play properly on my laptop, that makes the whole right side of my keyboard different. Fortunately, I don't need any of those keys for the game, but it's strange nonetheless. Anyone else have these issues? I guess I really should just order an adapter for my DualShock controller.

I play it with a keyboard.... ;_;
I've not hit any snags with the multiple key thing though, but I'm on a PC. I can say that laptop keyboards are evil and suck for normal typing, much less for gaming. XD

Again, this happens in YsO and YsF. This issue, at least, is due to your keyboard, not Ys. Most keyboards are only capable of registering a certain number of pressed keys at once, depending on which keys are pressed. Do you? I tried it with a controller, but um... bleh. I had harder time dealing with the buttons in their standard configuration than I did with the keys, really... By the way. Best. Sig. EVER.

Precisely!!
Plus with a keyboard you get about four fingertips at your disposal for the action keys. With a gamepad you get... uh... your thumb, pretty much. Bleh. =P

I didn't have any with Felghana but I'd switched to a different keyboard since and found I had the same problem you have. I'd always played Felghana with a keyboard, but after being forced to try with my PS2 pad by that problem I wouldn't go back

Maybe that's why I'm stuck on YsF in Nightmare mode! But like someone else said, you get to use even more fingers (unless you're one of those people that hold their pads weirdly...) For the button-mashing required, I can't imagine how a pad can beat a keyboard... Plus, I hate analogue controllers, for some reason >_>

I love them BUT sometimes I do still prefer a keyboard, it's just not very often. Ellefale, for example. Jumping, concentrating, turning round and shooting fireballs all at the same time is easier on the keyboard. Meh, everyone has their own way of playing. If a keyboard's comfier for you and you 'hate analogue pads' then it's all good

How can anyone play these games without a decent analog controller? i cant play on anything but the keyboard, i find it the most accurate and comfortable (moving with your fingertips, i find, is much more accurate than moving with your thumb on the analog stick)

I played the first 2 Ys PC games (did they have gamepad support on those? ^^;), Zwei!!, and a part of Ys VI as well with a keyboard. I eventually got a PS to USB adapter thing and used my PS controller instead. :3
What I find difficult to do on the gamepad is the dash attack. It's probably the issue with the analog sticks though. Since I've switched to my newer PS2 controller recently, I've yet to see if I still have that problem.

I had and still have that same problem. For some reason my keyboard won't respond if I press more than 3 buttons at once.
When I played the PC version of Ys VI (after playing the PS2's) I said almost instantly "WTF??" and felt very dissapointed.
BTW I'm looking for a PS2 Gamepad style especially for those 3 PC Ys Games.

Just get a cheap PS2 -> PC USB pad adapter. Plug the adapter into one of your USB shots, then the ps2 pad in the other side, and it'll work with Ys (though I'd recommend switching the triangle and X keys round). Much cheaper solution.

That's exactly what I've planned. But thanks anyway. (And yeah, a very cheap pad indeed. Which works fine) I recall Seldane saying once that it seemed PC Ys Games were made for a PS2 GamePad, since it's very good to play with one. Most keyboards cannot register more than 3 keys pressed simultaneously. It's not a technical problem; they are designed that way. You can get more expensive keyboards which are specifically made to register more... they are popular for cannibalization to set up MAME cabinets. But expect to pay a fair amount. I remember when I had a Machintosh Computer. I could press 5 buttons or more at once that made me never think that such an issue could exist.

Weird. I never had a single issue with my old keyboard, and it was so old and beaten that half the keys had faded off. Then again, this one I'm using now is a cheap £6 USB one, so...
The PS2 pad does really suit Ys though, but the PS2 pad suits most things. It's definitely one of the comfier ones I've tried to play games with.

Thanks for all the feedback. I imagined it might be a hardware issue like that. It just surpises me that it picks up some combinations of 3 keys, but not others.
So...any recommendations on the specific Playstation to USB adapter I should buy? Or ones I should avoid? (And a link to a site to buy it from would be helpful. I did a Froogle search, but those adapters and some of the sites look sketchy.)

I'm using a cheapass adapter by a company named Wasaki. Got it from Radio Shack. ^^ Works really well, in my opinion.
