I change into my superhero persona in Toal booths. Thankfully, it's Toal-free.

Indeed, I think badass when I hear Thor as well! Personally, I'd also prefer to see Reya instead of Reah or Rhea... oddly enough, the spellchecker on Firefox underlines Reya and Reah, but not Rhea, like rhea is some kind of real word... Hey, that's kinda cool! ...and... Pronunciation: \ˈrē-ə\ Hmmm... that line makes a hard E sound, like EE, right? Like... REE-ah? Whereas the correct pronunciation in Ys is... \'rĂ©-ə\ ? I'm not sure if that strange flipped-over e means anything... I never really bothered to study dictionary pronunciations. There is a voice option on the site, but... I have slow internet. Toal booth... toll booth... Toal House Cookies! XD

I agree wholeheartedly with Wyrd on the Thor/Toal issue. I do think Thor is a badass, but a very different kind of badass. The name simply isn't very fitting, IMO.

Reya works well. Though as I said before Rhea is an actual name, it comes from the Titan in Greek mythology that birthed the gods. It has a couple of spellings, Rhea of course, and Rea as well. Hence why those two names don't generally set off spell checkers. Anyway, I'm pretty well set on using Reah. Sorry! What it basically comes down to is that "Lair" isn't a name, and "Reah" is the only other officially-recognized spelling of her name... and I'd prefer not to throw a whole new spelling into that pot, confusing matters even more. I believe that at least half the people who see "Reah" will pronounce it correctly, and the other half... well, we can never truly expect people to pronounce names correctly anyway! Even if it were written as Lair, I guarantee you SOMEONE would pronounce it "ly-EER." -Tom Ah, but this whole thread has been about how much Falcom official romanizations suck. I like a few of them, Luther and Thor, but honestly even in the best of times they are problematic, just look at the Atlus translation of Legacy of Ys to see the pain in full force. You yourself are moving away from the official romanization of Thor, because to you its doesn't fit. I'm arguing much the same thing with the whole Reah thing. Will some people mispronounce Lair? A few I'm sure, but its unlikely, as its a pretty common English word which makes that pretty difficult. And I don't even LIKE Lair as a name that much, I just think its better than Reah. I remember that you yourself had issues with it in the past, can't find the thread right now, but, just sayin. Part of the issue is that the R is a much harsher sound in English than it is in Japanese. L is a lot less so. And for ethereal goddesses it just flows better, hence why I'd choose Leia if I could. And again, Ys 7 already made the point that Reah rhymes with Tia.

I generally feel the same way. Though the reason I think of her name as Reah instead of Lair is because Legacy of Ys was the first Ys game I played, which used the name Reah and not Lair. and then later, I played Ys Books I & II on the Wii Virtual Console and I was all "Ummmm, what? Lair? What kind of name is that for a beautiful Goddess?" But yeah.

I'm curious what Wyrdwad will do for Duless/Dalles in Chronicles. If Falcom ever gives Origin the PSP treatment with voice acting and XSEED ports it, how would his name be pronounced? At first glance it looks like Dalles would be pronounced like "Dallas", but I was thinking you could also maybe pronounce it with a "z" sound like "Dall-ez" or "Dal-ez". For Duless, I'd just pronounce it "Du-less". Personally, I think these sound more wizard-like than "Dallas". "Day-less" or "Day-lez" isn't too bad either, although you'd have to alter the spelling a bit for those to make sense. Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm going with Dalles, with the intent of having it pronounced as it's written: "DAHL-ess." Kinda like Dallas, but with a softer A for the first vowel, and a more distinct E for the second. -Tom That works!

Imagine seeing this as an Ys fan on the final leg of my cross-country move out to Oregon: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dalles,_Oregon Imagine my disappointment when I learn it's pronounced the dalls, but spoken quickly
