Which was the first Ys game you played and when / where did you play it?
The first one I played was YsI for Sega Master system, it was sometime when I was a kid, and I was immediately hooked. Not only because I loved RPGs at the time (I still do), but for the story. I had never seen such a dramatic story in a game before, that was what really got me.
It was me and my brother who played it first, he was playing Alex Kidd like crazy, but I was looking at the new box.... The box that said Ys: The vanished omens. My brother was very sceptic about the game, since he didn't like the box art, but I looked at the screenshots on the back, and I repeatedly said: Can't we play this instead? C'mon! This looks really great. And eventually, I got him to stop playing Alex Kidd and he put the Ys cartridge in the console and pressed the ON button. After looking at the title screen and the game started, we looked at eachother: "It's an adventure game!" we shouted, overexcited. Since then, YsI for Sega Master system has always been my favorite game. I am 99.9% sure it'll remain that way.... Forever.

Ah... I don't remember... I was probably like 10 or so... and I was playing the Japanese version and I didn't like it very much... I was button smashing  just to get the text done. But then my uncle lend me an english version where I actually UNDERSTOOD what the heck's going on... then it became more fun. Oh, it was on the Turbo CD |

the first time was when i was about 6 or 7 in 91 for the sega master. i at first didn't like it because it was too difficult. i bought it cause i thought the art on the cover was cool
edit- i got it in k-mart and i first played it at my house

I actually played the Japanese version of Ys 3 for PC Engine first, I borrowed it from a friend at school in either 10 or 11th grade, which would be around 92 or 93. I loved it immediatly, though, I did get stuck after beating the 2nd boss in the cave, couldn't for the life of me figure out to go underneath his purch. Eventually I beat it. Then, I know in 11th grade a friend of mine gave me his copy of Ys 1 & 2 for some reason, & I fell in love with it, then I eventually got the US version of Ys 3, & then 4 I got from TZD when they offered it for 50 bucks, ofcoarse, this is supposed to be about my first, but I just had to say all that!

My first Ys game was Wanderers from Ys on the SNES, I didn't like it much at the time, too bright graphics, horrible control, and the game was too hard, I could get past to the final level thanks to the 'save game/clear screen' bug i got to discover... Not long ago I got to replay it and finish it and oh boy, what a final, greatest final ever, I love how nostalgic it is...

My first time on an Ys game was not a really good experience, as it was master System's game, that a friend lent me for some time along the console... But I hadn't the manual, so i didn't knew how to equip weapons and armors... So i could'nt survive long enough to advance through the game, and let it in its box... 1 year later I holded my Nec Cd rom² console, for the 1991 christmas, with the US version of Ys book I&II, and what a shock!!!  |

First time playing Ys was for the turbo duo back in 1992
I becams ecompletely absorbed in that game.. it was my life until i beat it...
Long time ago now, and i barely recall the story
i wish to play it again but am kind of prejudiced against any version that deviates from the trubografx cd one
i want that art and the original music and cut scenes
or im going to be disappointed

I was in the fourth grade maybe. And the Duo was new. Back then Ys 1 and 2 came with the console, so a family friend of mine picked it up, and started playing this game. Hearing music like that and, and speach was a god send. I instantly became addicted to that game, and Ys 3. They just seemed so cool at the time.
Now I'm 21, and my friend still has this copy, plus snatcher. I can't wait for magic engine to upgrade this November, so I can burn that game, or something. Yes having a legit copy would be sweet, but I'm always short on funds.

My first Ys game is the PC-88 Ys I. Well at that I time I think I was only in 3-4th grade don't really remember. Actually what really got me hook on Ys game is Ys III from Sega Megadrive.

I didn't even know there were that many different versions of the game, until just a few years ago. Wouldn't the CD version be better because of voice acting, and music?

I played Y's Book 1 and 2 first. The game got perfect ratings in all the magazines so I had to upgrade to the CD attachment and see what the hype was all about. I got the Turbo Grafx CD attachment one christmas back in about 1990. Once the opening sequence started with the lightning, thunder, and CD quality music, I new this was going to be a rememberable experience. Never before have I experienced such a masterpiece from beginning to end. I still hold true that Y's Book 1 and 2 has the best OST for a videogame. I immediately got Y's III and Y's IV as they became available. No other RPG has been more enjoyable to me than the Y's series.

My first Ys wasn't too long ago, it was Ys I Eternal on MSX emulator. Govellius told me that is was great, and I looked passed the grafics and I just loved the gameplay.
I was kinda late with Ys, because me and all my friends were into Nintendo and not into SEGA, I didn't even knew the excistence of the PC-Engine (Ys IV and Ys V also didn't make it to europe on the SNES).
But that's mostly because the PC-engine console did come out in europe but there was no support for it, so in the exeption of the launch games no other games were released for it (I don't think Ys was with the launch games)...

I was 8 or 9. My dad brought home a copy of Anceint Land of Ys (the DOS version) he fished out of a bargain bin at Radio Shack. My first thought about it; "Wow, this music sucks." Ironic, huh. I still fell in love with the game regardless.

I think I must have seen Ys 1 reviewed in 'S' magazine, which was the UK's only dedicated Master System mag. It got a great score and I liked the sound of it, but it was very expensive. In the end I got it for my birthday and loved it - the title screen had an amazing picture and although the title music was a bit warbly, I would just listen to it for ages.
I remember getting to Darm Tower and playing really late (for then) at night wanting to get further - when I finally beat Fact (Dulk Dekt) you got an amazing picture of the sunrise and two superb tunes (a pity that one is missing from the PC Engine version).
The first time I saw the PC Engine version of Ys 1 & 2 was in a local games shop. The guys there loved to show off the latest gear to me and my mates, so they put Ys on and the intro blew me away. At that time, anime style was not widespread at all in the UK and I used to buy games purely on the basis that they had anime pictures in them! But the graphics and the music of the CD version were just stunning compared to the SMS version.
I played through it first time on a PAL converted Core Grafx which gave better colour that the PAL white Engine. Me and a friend played through it together and we were just completely addicted to it until the very end. We hadn't levelled up to the max so fighting Darm was a hell of a challenge. But we did it and it had the best game ending ever.
Since then, Ys has been my favourite game (alongside Space Harrier) and will be for ever.

My first Ys was Ys VI for PC. I got it a few days ago (3 or 4). Now I am playing Ys book I & II.

The first Ys I played was the Sega Master System version of Ys I. I had bought a Genesis when it first came out and you got a free Power Base Converter and master system games in the mail. I bought a few more games dirt cheap from a local video store and Ys was one of them. Of course I pronounced it "wise" for a long time because I didn't know any better.  Anyway, I fell in love with the game and to this day, it's the only game I ever made maps for as I played it (the mines and darm tower), mostly because I was just so enamored with it. I remember being so jealous of Turbografx CD owners when Ys I & II were released. I used to pour over screenshots in EGM and try to draw 'anime style' like the game used. I was elated later when Ys III was released on Genesis and loved every minute of it, even though it very different. |

they had a sale at fred meyers for the last um turbo duo and mom put it on lay away
about a month later i got it and one night in like 1993 or 94 or 95 i played ya 1+2 and that kicked butt. i loved it. got hooked instanty.

Fear not, I shall defend you--for what it's worth.
As for first times --crude topic-- I started with Napishtim. Saw an article in a gaming mag comparing it to a fast paced Zelda, and raving about the difficulty and the need to switch elemental swords on the fly.
Got the game at a pretty rough time in my life, and my god was it an exceelent distraction!
I beat it in a matter of days, but it was one of the ONLY games that I've bothered with extra content (Boss Rush, baby!)
And I've been (madly) in love with the series ever since.
--and for what it's worth, I like it MUCH more than Zelda. Slow combat and a bunch of puzzles, compared to sheer Adolness? Link is Macguyver; Adol is Jet Fuckin' Li.
(still have to play DoY, V, and Origin. . . I'm still missing out on so much!)

Link is Macguyver; Adol is Jet Fuckin' Li. The combat being slow isn't the problem with Zelda. The Puzzles often being punishing (with no Reset Spell ala Lufia 2) isn't the problem. Keys. Adol needs one key to get through a dungeon. Maybe two. Link needs fifty. And they aren't even SPECIAL keys. Zelda is a constant fetchquest. Get a key to open a door. to get another key. Adol? He's got Dogi the wallcrusher. Where he's going... he doesn't need walls. My first experience was with a friend's copy of I & II Complete - but I won't get into that again here sans that you do need to play Origin. Bad. Even untranslated its awesome. Dawn of Ys is my next one to play, the last besides seven I need to... and it's coming up on my list soon |

Hopefully you'll like The Dawn of Ys, it is my second favorite next to Ys Book I & II (including the remakes). I think my third favorite game in the series would have to be Oath in Felghana. I remember a segment in Dawn of Ys where Dogi the wallcrusher smashes through a series of walls to save a kid stuck in a shrine, and the kid asks Dogi why he smashed through the walls when the doors were already unlocked. Dogi did not have an answer. Ys V is one game that you can't get through without a walk-through, unless you understand Japanese. I remember coming across a puzzle that required you to input a certain button combo. But, I remember posting somewhere about my first time playing Ys. Too lazy to share my story. I think I will make breakfast instead.  |
