Everyone is entitled to there opinion. Its wierd, I have ended up really loving some games people have scorned before, such as secret of evermore. In the end its an Ys game and there always good.

We really need more opinions than one Mod's and one lurker's. My opinion will be dismissed (most likely), I have no influence or anything, but I'm completely honest. I hope at least some people can regard my opinions valid. You shouldn't think that. :/ It's not about influence! I would imagine most people here appreciate another point of view. Nothing's worse than having a crap ton of "I THINK THE GAME SUCKS TOO" reviews without seeing the other side of things.

I honestly don't think it's that bad. I'd say it's on par with the PC versions.

I agree with FM-77 and diverbird.
Also, diverbird, there's no need to take such an offensive position. ;P Relax.
Even if this game was worse than Ys V PS2 (which is likely impossible) I'd still play it no matter what. Reason is that I like Ys overall, and I'm a Ys fanatic. What other reason do I need? xD Hehe.
I still have to play it, but I absolutelly agree on FM-77's criticism, it sounded logical and "solid", if you may. I also felt "tempted" to play the game due to diverbird's arguments too.
Conclusion? Chill down. xD

Even if this game was worse than Ys V PS2 (which is likely impossible) Is it really that bad? I have it but haven't gotten around to playing it yet Well, I almost played every version of every Ys game and, in my opinion, Ys V PS2 is one of the worst of all. Note, though, this doesn't mean the game can't be enjoyed. It can, if you try hard. I enjoy so many games people just call the worst crap in universe, but I wasn't able to like that Ys... not enough at least, but it still had some things that are good about it. You can transfer the Flame Sword from PS2's Ys III and something of PS2's Ys IV, for example. This is very cool, for example. It may be crap, but even so it's a new Ys game, it isn't a port or something. It has AWESOME character portraits (Ys V lacked character portraits and artwork in the original game, so this is a great plus). What I REALLY didn't like was the gameplay: Adol's midair attack is the LAMEST thing I ever saw, and his movement isn't very smooth. Ys IV PS2 had greater diversity in gameplay, as well as a relatively smoother one. Still, this time around you CAN jump and use the shield, something you can't in Ys IV. Anyway, I think you get my point. ;P There's no need to worry about it, just don't expect "the best game ever" or something. Anyway, I just meant that Ys I/II DS has probably a better gameplay, etc..

I myself have been enjoying it immensely. It plays just like the TG version that I've been accustomed to. It's portable! which is a plus because my Duo is pretty much dead and I can only play the music on a cd player. It has a couple of nice extras like that outer dungeon right before going into Darm Tower. If there's any of you who have problems reading/understanding Japanese like me, you can download the walkthrough/faq from Gamefaqs.com in the PC section to get through any tough spots and figure out what's going on. I'm pretty much near the end of the tower and I can't wait for the 2nd one to come in the mail. Hope this helps make your decision easier for some of you guys still on the sidelines. This is my take on it, so like any other opinion, you can agree or not, it has no bearing on me.

I plan to get this game once I get a Nintendo DS. I am just curious though... any input yet if this is going to be released in the US or if there will be a translation made for it?

Well, Deuce once got "curious" or something about the game... but I don't think he or anyone will ever translate this game, mostly due that Ys I.II COMPLETE is already translated.
I think no company mentioned anything about bringing these DS Ys games to english-speaking shores.
We already know the story of Ys I and Ys II too well. xD One can play them in japanese and still understand what's going on, as everybody is familiar with all the events.

I am planning to work on a translation for this game. (I know, this is a bit late) I am working with another, and we are still planning if we should release a patch when we are done, or with beta patches in the middle. This is also my first time playing through a Ys game, so I am hoping the game is just as exciting. We are planning to translate Ys II for the nintendo DS after we are done with this one. But unfortunately, we still have many problems. The first problem is that the only way to "patch" the game is patching an illegal ROM. Which means the only way you can play the translated version is by an emulator, or with an illegal hardware. The second problem is the translating. I believe all of you here has played this game probably on another system. I need some sort of a translation guide for the first part of the game. Just about where Adol gets out of the house. (you know, after talking to the doctor, his son and the nurse) I need each line of script accurately, and I'll see how I can do this. and I have a question for all. Do you want the font size to be the default size in game, or a font size that is about 2/3 of that default size? Having a smaller font size means we don't need to worry about "space", but it is very small. Having it the default font size makes the text readable, but we might get in some trouble when we can't fit enough English text. the following is a screen using the small text font. As I did not know what the translation was, I had to use a "testing" line. So if anybody can write out the translated script for that first portion of the game for me, I'll decide if the script translation is "do-able."

I'd at least like to know what everything says in the secret area -- especially the treasure chest following the secret boss. It says something, but I don't know what it says.
I don't think they're inferior. They just... have their own level of charm.

I wouldn't be averse to patched versions of Ys I and II DS, to be honest.
Also, neither ROMs nor DS flashcarts are inherently illegal in many countries. It all depends on how you use 'em, really.

Well because this is a Ys community site, I'd have to say that probably everyone here has played this game before. But I believe there are many people out there that has not played the game. I've read through this thread and have read how it wasn't an excellent port. Even though it was so, I would need to say that not everybody has a Wii, and you should know that Ys for the PC is really not a game that many kids are looking for. And NO translation is necessary. It only takes up time, and is only great while it lasts. (For I have translated many DS games before.)
Patching a DS game is a lot easier than you think. Some common patches include xdelta and ninja. On ninja, all you need to do is to download the ninja patcher from their site, which is only a click of a button, then load up the ROM and the patch. Well of course, then you need to click on "patch" or "ok" or whatever the confirm button is, So basically, patching the ROM is not that time consuming nor hard at all.
Many of the "new" people do not even know what the Ys series is. They only care about Call of Duty, Square Enix stuff, and you know - games with insane graphics.
I believe more than 1/3 of the gamers in the world do not know what the Ys series is.
When compared to the other Ys games, I know it is terribly lacking. But if you compare this game to the majority of the DS games, it shines like a sun. Even if you have access to all the NDS games out there, there are only few to choose from. And Ys for the DS is one.
That's the reason why I want to make a fan trans for the game.

Quite honestly, I really like/liked both the Ys I and II DS. True, it might not be up to to levels of Ys I.II Complete, but there's something extra nice about them being portable. I would actually be very happy if one day patches for them were made! :'D
By the way, I think the font looks ok? (Though my eyes just naturally focus on smaller things better so I don't know if others find it as readable as I do?)

Wow, people are really divided on the the DS versions it seems. I'm probably going to have a buddy in Japan order me the Ys DS Special Box from 7dream since it'll be cheaper than importing from Play-Asia. I like what little I've heard of the music on Youtube, what's the general consensus on the OST?

Some songs sound quite out of tune, such as the Subterranean Canal theme. Others are pretty decent, but it mostly sounds like midi to modplug tracker conversions.

... I can't believe someone is actually willing to translate these games! That's WONDERFUL!!!! =DDDD Man, I know there can't be any promises, but a certain friend is going to LOVE it if it becomes true! Oh, and that small text/ font is good enough, I think. I think refraining from using a few words in english is worse, too. I did play almost every version of Ys I and II, but I'm as maniac as to beat EVERY version of EVERY Ys game. And I also compared the slight plot/ lines changes in-between the versions. Thus, I can't tell you how much I'd love to see these portable Ys games in english. And indeed, I know many people who never tried Ys games, but would be willing to play the DS games if translated to english. Wow

I like what little I've heard of the music on Youtube, what's the general consensus on the OST? They cost too much for their own good. I would be happy to pay that kind of money if they were both bundled together. Why would I pay all that money, when I can reinvest it in Complete instead, get a much better version, and be able to play it on a bigger screen.... in English. $50 bucks for a DS game, Fucking robbery if you ask me Most people like the OST, I found it supremely poor compared to Complete. Agreed
