Well, we all know there used to be only 2 versions of Ys IV, but only one of them was considered to be the official. PCE's Ys IV The Dawn of Ys, although more popular, was considered uncanon by Falcom and that SNES' Ys IV Mask of the Sun holds the "correct" plot. But about a decade later, Taito had released for PS2 another version called Ys IV Mask of the Sun - a new theory -. This game is considered to be one of the worst Ys games of all time. As stated by most: boring gameplay, low-budget game, bad graphics, etc. But even though this game is called "Mask of the Sun", the story and the events are different not only from The Dawn of Ys, but also from the original Mask of the Sun game. Therefore, the question arises: Is PS2's Ys IV canon, and did SNES' Ys IV become uncanon? If anyone knows something, please, say it here.

Of course not. Ys IV Mask of the Sun is and has always been the original, canon Ys IV. Taito came up with whatever in their own Ys IV, and that's just their crap. The scenario in Ys IV Mask of the Sun SFC were made by Falcom themselves.

And even then, it will be canon. Retconning is unprofessional and for really bad story tellers only. Hopefully Falcom won't make this Move of Losers™.

The scenario in Ys IV Mask of the Sun SFC were made by Falcom themselves. Hm, I didn't know that one. From what I had once understood, Falcom made the script, story, characters, etc.. and gave all that information to Hudson and Tonkinhouse for them to make Ys IV. And that Tonkinhouse followed everything faithfully, while Hudson made a lot of changes Falcom didn't intend to. Oh well, I was just curious. Also since we are talking about all that canonical thingy... After Ys ETERNAL and Ys II ETERNAL / Ys I.II COMPLETE came, did the original Ys I and Ys II games become uncanon or something?

Sort of off-topic but Ys IV related: Anyone wanna take a guess as to what's holding Falcom back from re-imaging Ys IV like they did with Ys III (re: The Oath in Felghana)?
I mean, Origin came out and now 7 is announced!
Where's the Ys IV love?!?

Ys IV seems to be completely forgotten by Falcom. They're ignoring it! By the way, since no Ys IV was totally made by Falcom, they SHOULD release their own version. It would clear things up as what is canon and not. But I'm fine with the current Ys IV games. xD

Ow doods...
I hope this game has nothing canon about it. Because you don't revisit Esteria! Not even Minea! No Lilia, no Sarah, no one.
The story is different, it seems to have been shortened.
Well, I'm on my way to finish this game.

Hopefully Falcom won't make this Move of Losers™. The sarcasm is strong with this one.

So wait, the PS2 version didn't have lilia or esteria at all? REALLY? That's crap.

Really. xD
Hey, since I'm revisiting this topic after so long, perhaps it'd be good to mention some sources state Ys IV The Dawn of Ys was once the canonical version and so it remained as for years.
Anyway, indeed, you don't revisit Esteria and much more. The game and (what I could somewhat understand from) the plot has been severely shortened and cliche'd. I mean, the lack of Lilia alone suffices to show that regard. She was among the most important key characters in both previous Ys IVs.

Then what about in Mask of the Sun? xD Her role was VERY important there! (Though I'm not saying she was something like... "The Key to Save the World" or anything of that magnitude.)
By the way, since I'm here again, perhaps I should say that even though the game isn't what one would expect from the series, it can be enjoyed quite well. It gets better later, when you keep acquiring more magical swords and their magics, and other things. At least it's different. Because, for example, I'm DAMN tired of seeing Ys I & II ports and remakes. xDDD I'd rather play an Ys-IV-PS2-like game instead of another Ys I/II.
Now, Ys V PS2 is REALLY difficult to be truly enjoyed, even by me. xD But even it CAN be enjoyed, if you give it a real BIG, generous chance. xDD

I think that's appliable, it's a good-enough-guess. xD Anyway, like I said, Ys V can be enjoyed... to be honest I like it a bit (after forcing myself in the beginning). But to say it's better than the original SFC version is an absurd.

What I played of it was terrible, granted... but I'm not so sure the lack of Lilia is really all THAT bad. To be honest, when I played Dawn of Ys, I thought the whole return to Esteria was the weakest part of the game. It felt tacked-on and unnecessary. . . Come on though, you have to admit, avoiding spoilers, she does make for an interesting battering ram

*ahem*
So, instead of plowing a girl who clearly has the hots for him, he'd rather use said girl to plow his enemies?
Let's not forget that he walked away from a bonafide goddess -- even though she and her sister both gave him their blessing (pun not intended)...
I swear, the Christin pair are just dangly ornaments.

Feena/Reah/Yunica, the One True Threesome of the Ys franchise? Or would that be Feena/Reah/Black Pearl?

I was thinking after the events of Ys II when they decide they'd rather hang out with the pearl than with Adol, the alternative is just too creepy to contemplate and now that you're made me do it I need brain bleach!
*Imagines a field of flowers*
No, not good enough.
*Imagines a warm sunny beach with the waves lapping gently against the shore*
Still not enough.
*Imagines a warm sunny beach with Olha and Terra skinny-dipping in a crystal clear ocean*
Much better...
