There's SOME good modern J-pop (case in point: Mizuki Nana), but most of the stuff that makes it into anime isn't really that great. I don't follow Jpop much outside anime because I am not at all interested in Pop music in general. Maybe the best of it just doesn't make it to the shows.
Also, I sorely miss the awesome J metal anime songs (Saint Seiya, Outlaw Star, Brain Powerd) that gave way to generic Jrock crap with people who can't sing to save their lives. Where are the days when X Japan did anime songs ;((
Thankfully, there's still some original music used for anime once in a while. Examples would be the Zetsubou Sensei OPs, and this (a favourite OP from one of the best shows on 2009; love setting it for my alarm clock):

I guess it not being officially licensed and distributed has sth to do with it. It's also pretty old, so by now only the hardcore fansub audience knows of it... Myself, I found out about it from a Korean friend who watched it on TV as a kid.
I just don't like the characters in Maison Ikkoku. The main character is a complete and utter idiot, and all the side-characters are completely insensitive jerks, aside from the main girl! I much prefer the characters in KOR, from what I've seen, as every one of them instantly seems to have a likable, interesting personality, from the main characters all the way down to the side-characters. And that's a must for me, in this kind of show.
I'm not a huge fan of the MI anime either, but the manga is one favorite... Yes, many of the characters are jerks, but it's one of the only manga that I've read (and I've read hundreds) where the characters actually have meaningful growth and change though out the series. So, don't discount the manga, it really is worth a look.
