he don't give you someting, so, there's a consequence beating him or not?
ps: a forum dedicated to Ys is fantastic!

If you beat Geis, Geis loses. ... 'k xD Actually I think it simply won't matter at all. Although whenever there's a battle in a video game where you can ACTUALLY win even when the normal thing to do is to lose, I ALWAYS make sure I win the battle. xD This was kind of problematic to me sometimes, like in Chrono Trigger, where I leveled up SO much as to beat Lavos in his first encounter. It also wasn't easy to beat Asch with Luke on the highest difficulties. Anyway, I guess the only difference is the dialogue. Must be something like: Victory: "Oh, you're good." Defeat: "Oh, you suck." xD

Yes the only difference is in the dialogue. I don't have the script here 'cause i'm actually at my parents' house but if you are interested in knowin' his speech i can paste it. Let me know...i already translated that part so it will be easy for me Bye Bye

The first couple of times I played I used that part as a test on myself to see how strong I was at my current level, or to see how much more difficult it was to beat him at lower levels.

I usually can't stand it when games throw you into a battle your supposed to loose. Ys does it quite well though as you always feel like you can win and usually this is also true.. Keith Fact in Dawn of Ys being the one exception I can think of right now.
If I remember correctly Skies of Arcadia did an interesting take on the whole "loosing battle" thingy. I recall something about being given the choice to fight Ramirez early in the game or run away and that fighting him resulted in an early death. It's been so long though.
Personally, I think battles like these should only be done in one of two ways. 1: You're actually able to defeat or hurt your opponent enough to end the battle 2: You're "dead" before you know what hit you
Usually though, these battles are far to drawn out. A horrible example would be Vile + mech in Mega Man X. Especially the second time when your all buffed up. If this bastard actually had an energy meter.. he'd go down in flames.

Think of it like Bass in Mega Man 7. Its more or less to tell you how well you're doing, and your grips on the fighting system. You can always practice him in Time Attack, even if he's not really worthy of it if you ask me. A pumped up version would have been a cool bonus match.
My least favorite game for "battles you cant win" is Star Ocean 2.
You fight a giant gargoyle. Apparently you cant win, you just have to stay alive for x amount of time. So I waste everything I've got, i die, story continues... THEN its the real fight? How do I know I'm not supposed to die twice, or just win the first time, or . . . and it was HARD!

Worst example I can think of is Margulis in Xenosaga Episode I. I lost a lot of healing items on that battle, because he was comparatively pretty damn easy for a boss you're not supposed to be able to beat. -Tom That was supposed to be unbeatable? ; I didn't even know and... wow. I mean, it was a pain to win, but it didn't take more than the one stupid-long go. I thought I was just underleveled or something. Hah!

If I'm remembering correctly and we're talking about the same fight, I do believe so. I hope I'm not forging memories... I haven't played that game in so damn long
...okay I totally just checked a FAQ and cross checked my file for the special thingy you can get for killing him - Purple Ring; yes you can kill him, and yes I did. :O
SO yeah, now that I know the memory of that isn't a lie... first playthrough for me, I was like FUCKFUCKFUCK I'm gonna die so I kept striving to survive and pulled through somehow. I had no idea that was one of those losing battles. They certainly didn't give him the obscene power that most fights like that usually employ (Geis schooled me in less than 10 seconds). It was doable!
