I read a walkthrough for this game and apparently there's lots of cool stuff in the Ruins of Amnesia. The only problem is that you have to perform dash jumps to reach them.
And here's the thing... is it actually possible to perform a dash jump? Okay, let me clarify that: Yes, I know that it can accidentally happen once in a while if you just press all the buttons at random - but is it possible to ACTUALLY perform it AT WILL? I have never, EVER managed to do it. I have tried to dash jump to various places countless times, or even just tried to dash jump on a field (with no results). It makes me cry just thinking about how much time I have wasted, and how much fury it has resulted in.
ESPECIALLY in the ruins, as when (not if) you fail, you fall down and it takes forever to get back to try again, and to fail again. "Trying is the first step towards failure."
Is there any way to do it? Is there a way to possibly hack the game so that it can be performed by a simple press of a button? Or is there a program that will allow you to assign a key which will execute a series of button presses at a programmable timing?
I mean, it cannot be humanly possible to perform a dash jump at will, so there's GOT to be another way to do it? Please say that there is.

Um yeah, I got the guide for this and it has a whole section on performing the Dash Jump. I am planning to post some scans/pics of the guide, and Ill make sure to put some of those down.
I don't get why people have such a tough time performing the Dash Jump. Its simple, hit the attack button, and jump almost immediately after. Ever played Street Fighter?? Its like trying to jump kick as you raise into your jump.

Yeah right, like you could perform it just like that. But those scans would be very appreciated.

I tap the direction, stop for a split second, then hit the attack and jump buttons at the same time. Works like 75% of the time for me ;/ If it does screw up, you end up jumping almost straight up (moving slightly forward because of attacking) anyway so you're not likely to fall down at least.

There are some areas in the ruins with some items that require not only dash jumps but very VERY precise dash jumps. So unfortunately luck won't get you anywhere with that! Luckily the items in those extremely hard to get places are actually pure rubbish (or rather, rubbish, because after all the tension and stress one goes through, their awesomeness is severely reduced when one finally gets it - such as that damned Capla Water in the above Majunuun area! X( Some items were amazing though! Like the emelas tablet! ) As for how to dash jump - I quickly tapped on the forward button and just as I was letting go, tapped the jump button. Ofcourse, I heard you all say that its MUCH easier in the PSP version, so probably that's why I'm getting it right! Perhaps you should play that version too?! XD (Its like... tap, tap. Like let go of one button, immidiately tap another. You don't need the dash-slash jump anywhere in here! ...I think?) Another random dash jump advice - I used to get so stressed out before attempting a jump, I used to practice before hand. (I would still mess up because I was nervous, but still!) Perhaps you should go and attempt some trial jumps too in one of those long horizontally going corridors? Like that one lined with those laser blasting creatures and big monstrous mummies at the back?

Actually, this MP83 method is the REAL TRUE way of doing the dash jump. When you mentioned the double quick taps, I realized that's exactly how I do it. The double taps just automatically get tapped because one is so incredibly nervous. :'D

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the dash jump in this game! I am sooo glad Falcom got rid if in their later Ys games! I had to try for several minutes to get it right and then for 30 minutes more to cross those damn jumps in the ruins. I had to get a feel for the amount of time after the initial tap before pressing the two buttons almost simultaneously. It was easier on the PS2 version for sure! Maybe its easier to do on controllers than on a keyboard.

Later games still have the dash attack (tap in a direction, wait half a second then press the attack button). Once you get dash attack right, dash jump comes naturally. It's only a matter of timing.

well.. i used to hate this move too. rarely could do it. but then, one day, i was trying and i did understand the move. it isn't all that bad. to tell the truth, it's really simple, and can be used in normal playing all the time with about 80/90% of success.
- first, you need to be facing the direction you would like to dash jump. if adol is facing south, and you tap north, you won't be able to dash-jump. - tap the directional key. - wait for something like 0.5 sec. - press the atack button and the jump button one after another very quickly for maximum jump reach (it's something like sliding your fingers from one key to another, in pads, you can actually slide them). you can exercise this by first hitting only the atack button and performing the dash attack, to learn the correct time of waiting after your tap the direction.
i thing that most people get stucked with the timming. just try to learn it. it is not very quickly, and not very slowly.

Or is there a program that will allow you to assign a key which will execute a series of button presses at a programmable timing? Well, you can always create macros vias hacking, I suppose. But I have no idea how to do it or if someone has done it. I personally have nothing against the Dash Jump. It's cool, but I think Falcom found a better way in YsF by inserting the Jump Slash, which basically can be executed by mindlessly slashing midair. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the dash jump in this game! I am sooo glad Falcom got rid if in their later Ys games! Maybe its easier to do on controllers than on a keyboard. Well, there are WAY harder things to pull off in YsF, but I guess their existence were not intentional (in other words, bugs/glitches). I think the Dash Jump is simple to do... at least on the PS2 and PSP. I never tried the PC version, but I guess using a GamePad must be the same. And I get the feeling playing the PC version on a keyboard, it might be harder to pull off the Dash Jump. But I guess it's a matter of getting used to. Well, I'll see by myself sometime. Staying calm and concentrated is the key, I guess. As well as training. And that's for executing anything difficult in any game.

I can't see how anyone can play with the new Ys games with the keyboard but the Dash Jump was horrible. Once you get the timing down though, it's simple enough to do it a good majority of the time but just the fact the timing was so unforgiving. Bad Falcom.

That was part of the fun playing SotN with Richter. Especially if you aimed to speedrun it. But split second reflexes and timing is more or less the same thing but the dash jump was too strict. It's almost like Falcom put it in as an afterthought.

I understand it's all a matter of timing, but that's what I hate about it! Moves that are based on perfect timing are just plain annoying. They can be mastered, sure, but the fact remains that they're NOT FUN. Skill in games should come from split-second reflexes and puzzle-solving, not from timing your button-presses. That's why I hated playing the upside-down castle in Symphony of the Night as Richter... using his special moves to get around was just plain IRRITATING. Guess that's also why I never got into fighting games. -Tom Its bigtime about timing if you look at from one perspective, but to really pull it off you almost have to hit the direction button, the attack button, and the jump button all at the same time. I guess having fighting game experience helps, but once you nail it a few times, practice practice practice. Granted, its a really wierd technique to learn, but try it out in a field. I also found doing the dash jump with the yellow sword equipped, always seemed to help a bit.

It should have been made easier to perform, as in using the sword at any point in your jump would inch you further. I also don't think that 1/3 of the jumps depend on its mastery ether. If anything, it should have been something to exploit, making the game easier to play once mastered. If you couldn't perform it, no biggie, you just had to be really good at your jump distance planning.
You thought Richter's special moves were hard to perform? the Down Up Jump move?

Someone should hack YsF Adol into YsVI.

I move in favor of calling you "Doc" from now on. As long as it holds relation to "back to the future" I am happy with that.

Well at least they fixed it and made it the R button in the future games, which makes getting around the castles much better.
