I'm creating this pool, because I was just wondering how many people actually played that title. It's a PS2 port of PC's Ys I-II COMPLETE, but I thought that maybe because it isn't as accessible as Ys I-II COMPLETE and it hasn't an english patch, people might just have skipped this title and only tried the PC version. But what many people don't know is this version has really awesome exclusive features. I'm not talking about the amazing musical remixes or the cool extra items for its Gallery Mode, but rather about the gameplay. Here are two posts I did long ago regarding the gameplay, for those who aren't informed: Click 1Click 2There's also this: "Ys I・II ETERNAL STORY is the best Ys I/II gameplay-wise, I think. Adol can move as precisely as with the mouse in the PC versions. Even if you use a GamePad on the PC version with an analogic stick, it won't be as smooth and precise as this PS2 version." So, yeah, voice your thoughts and opinion.

I really wanted to play through the Dream Gems side quest, but the Faq I was using didn't have any info on it.
I loved playing YsES, and the music was so impressive. I am more of a console kind of guy anyways, and its basically Ys complete, but with better music. I love the game.

I own it but I never finished it. I think I got as far as the start of Ys II, but aside from the added Dream Gems extras and the unlockable artwork I couldn't really get into it all that much. It wasn't bad, it just seemed to me like a dumbed down graphical version of Ys I & II Complete. Maybe it would look different if I had an HDTV, but on my CRT it didn't look all that hot. As far as gameplay went, I didn't really notice too much of a difference. The bonus items for the limited edition set were pretty worth it though and that was what I used to cook up that short little Ys stop-motion animation I posted earlier.

I've not played it, and I'm not really bothered if I never do. I'm more than happy with my PC set, and if I feel the urge to buy more Ys it'll be for the lovely Saturn

Nope, it's on my long list of things to get but it's not really a priority.

I can't play imported game on my PS2 and it doesn't really interesting me. I've already bought Ys I & II complete on PC and Ys I & II on the virtual console. I think that is enough

I finished it and loved it! I want to get Ys I & II Complete soon, though.

It seems only I noticed the changes in the battle system. xD Man, you can do really neat things! My most common strategy is to equip the Short Sword and give a "STUN" status to the enemy and right after get the Tarwarl, go behind the creature and give it a good "KILL" hit, which instantly kills the enemy no matter what. xD It looked like that attacking from behind raises the chances of giving that blow. Yesterday I played a bit of it, and I tested the Hyper Cutter. Sometimes, but rarely, a "MISS" appears above the enemy, but I don't know what it meant, because it seemed I hit and damaged the enemy nonetheless. I wonder if it makes enemy miss their attacks on me, somewhat like the Cleria Ring? About the music, I think I'm kind of like Wyrdwad: some tracks are better in ES and some in COMPLETE. But, I still like ES' more, overall. Anyway, I love it!

I own the limited edition of the game, but have never played it. I was more interested in the play set thingy. This is precisely why I bought it too. It's just too cool an extra to pass up! -Thomas

Hmmm...
While I was playing this game today, I noticed another neat change in gameplay.
"The Combo System"
Each hit you inflict on an enemy, your "COMBO" counter will increase by 1. Once you take a hit, it returns to 0. And in Ys II, each time you use Fire Magic, the counter will decrease by 1. The maximum you can accummulate is 9999.
Simply put, the higher it is, the more damage you inflict. I don't know exactly the damage formula yet, but it gets the original damage value and multiplies it by some very small number. (That's somewhat obvious, but when the counter is "0", it will multiply by 1.0.)
If the counter is high enough, you can elevate the damage you inflict up to 5x more or something, it's monstrous. But that's when your counter gets to "9999", something you can do with the help of Short Sword's "STUN" ability (push a stunned enemy that doesn't get damaged by the sword's weak power to a wall). But even if your counter is "30", your strenght is already raised significantly.
Something fun to do is: get your counter to "9999" and keep spamming fireballs. A small one might instantly kill most enemies (but it still depends of your level and the difficulty setting up to an extent). The counter will decrease by each shot, but you got at least 5000 bombastic shots. xD Great for fast level grinding and quick playthrough.

I wonder if it makes enemy miss their attacks on me, somewhat like the Cleria Ring? It seems I was quite close on my guess. When you bump head-on against an enemy, both you and the enemy will hit each other. But with the Hyper Cutter equipped, the enemy may MISS the attack and only you'll end up attacking. If you equip this sword and wear the Cleria Ring, you're really well-protected. Also great for building up the COMBO "gauge" with greater success. (Don't count on Cleria Ring for that though, as the "gauge" is reset even when the Ring prevents you from being damaged.)

Heheh, I just found out something neat today. Adol's HP will be 255 when he's about Lv.50, but even so, you can keep leveling up to Lv.99! When you wear the strongest equipment on that level, Adol's STR and DEF are 389. Holy crap! I quickly and relaxedly disposed of Darm even on HARD difficulty. Also the skill from: BATTLE SWORD: "COUNTER!" When you bump head-on against an enemy, both you and it will be damaged. But that will trigger that ability, which either instantly kills the enemy or give it one powerful strike (don't know which). For some strange reason, you can't attack an enemy straightly by its back with that sword without taking damage, although that will trigger the skill for you. CLERIA SWORD: No skill?? Apparently it has no special skill. =( But it's a killer. xD Also: the extra artworks exclusively for that game are: - Beautiful - Amazing - Creative - Amusing They're so good I think I'll capture them with something, then post them here. Also: "nightmEre" difficulty is unlocked after you beat the game once. Going to replay. xD

So, I found out that Long Sword's ability is actually RIDICULOUSLY useful. (Pay attention to the Boss' HP) The Long Sword has the "CRITICAL!" hit ability. Very frequently, Adol will hit enemies with a strike more powerful than average. That ability kind of gets useless after more powerful swords show up. Or so I thought. For some strange reason, it's a cataclyst against most bosses, while it's not as effective against enemies. Apparently, a "CRITICAL!" hit on a boss is a hit with Adol's strength doubled, while against common enemies it's a hit with the original damage doubled, pretty much like the Power Ring. I don't know why it's like that, but one would have to talk to DigiCube programmers. (Who shamefully aren't around anymore. =/) (Also I finally decided to use YouTube to upload something. =p) Sorry for the video quality, for those of you who see it.

I saw a video of the PS2 version of these games (well, Ys II, anyway) on Youtube, but I didn't pay much attention to it since I own the PC "Complete" version of these games. Looked the same to me, except I think the video I saw had voice acting, plus the mention of an extra sidequest; just didn't seem worth it to me. The Long Sword has the "CRITICAL!" hit ability. Wow, that ability would've been incredibly useful when fighting Jenocres in my speedrun (or would it, since I was under-leveled...?). Still, it's amazing that it would work like that on bosses...

Yes, even when you are very underleveled, that skill will probably kill any Boss, except Dark Fact/Darm and magic-only bosses.
Speaking of Jenocres (and the "worm" one in the shrine), I beated them with extreme ease thanks to that skill. A common Long Sword hit would take away 1 HP from the boss, but the criticals would suck 1/5 or 1/4 of the HP. xD

Oh well. Just found out an Ys I・II ETERNAL STORY strange bug. Ys I only. I STUNned enemies with the Short Sword while wearing the Timer Ring. They get eternally stunned that way, something I didn't know. Though it's strange that the "STUN" thingy doesn't appear above them while I'm wearing the Timer Ring (except at the moment they get killed, for some weird reason). Anyway, when I switched over to another ring, suddenly the "STUN" thingy appeared above their heads. If I wait for a while, they start moving again, but slowly. While they are still moving slowly, if I switch over to the Timer Ring again, they won't move at all, and when I switch back to another Ring AGAIN then the "STUN" thingy will appear above their heads again and get stunned! In other words, I can eternally stun them. And I can switch to i.e Power Ring to kill them while stunned, and if they start moving again I switch back to the Timer Ring and right after switch back to the ring I was wearing to STUN them again. Weird bug. But cool. Also I bet that Long Sword exploit against bosses is also a bug. All of that will be part of an ultimate Ys series bugs video by MP83, kiyuki and I. It will take some more months to be done, but it will get done eventually. ========================================== Also the skill from: BATTLE SWORD: "COUNTER!" When you bump head-on against an enemy, both you and it will be damaged. =( But it's a killer. xD About what I quoted in yellow, I found it out: it delivers a more powerful blow instead of instantly killing the enemy. And yes, the Cleria Sword has no skill indeed. But it's not like it needs one. Also, the Silver Sword (Ys I) and Cleria Sword (Ys II) have the same properties (except for the STR attribute). The very same is true between the Flame Sword (Ys I) and the Battle Sword (Ys II).

You really have to give it a try. When you get the first 3 swords, their skills make the gameplay very interesting.
By the way, did the HP recovery speed in Ys I-II COMPLETE depend of Adol's maximum HP? Because in Ys I・II ETERNAL STORY it does. Very interesting. (EDIT: In Ys I actually. Apparently, the maximum HP doesn't matter in this Ys II version.)
=============================
I found out another interesting detail also exclusive in this version, regarding the COMBO system.
The higher your COMBO "counter", not only is higher the damage you inflict per hit, but you also receive more EXP and GOLD.

Ugh. There's a bothering bug in the Gallery Mode of this game. If any of you plan on eventually playing this game until the end and are "game completists", I recommend reading the e-mails I exchanged with the author of a FAQ/Guide regarding the Image Gallery and Music Collection.
