Ah, yes, the resolution, that's something, I forgot they officially support widescreen resolutions this time around. Before, to make it widescreen for the 3 PC Ys games with the Ys VI engine, one or more members here had created a patch IIRC that took care of that. So even though it's not really a change in favor of the Steam version, it's nice that now you don't have to bother with an extra resolution patch anymore, both in terms of finding/downloading it, and installing/messing around with it (if you do need it).
The translation bit you said is bullshit, though, for numerous reasons. I said I wouldn't discuss it that much due to redundancy, but now that I think about it, you weren't even in this forum when we addressed this subject, so I'll try to make it kind of "quick" just for you. Since I'm usually so thorough, it's difficult to make it quick, but here's it:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you have dialogue changed from Japanese to English that doesn't correspond one another semantically as much as the other option, you have a problem, and that alone determines quality/translation superiority.
XSEED consistently inserts lines of dialogue never found in the original Japanese game, and puts phenomenal effort in making references to anything the translator(s)/editor(s) are familiar with, such as: quotes, names, characters and objects unrelated to the game. There are also complete insertions of entirely new dialogue, and, sometimes, worse yet:
replacement of original dialogue with completely new, 0%-semantically-matching dialogue, especially with side characters. Sometimes, it gets so bad, the dialogue suddenly switches to full caps, kinda like someone trying to get others to laugh at your bad joke by saying it 3 times louder, which just makes it even more unfunny and bothersome.
Those tolerant to these dialogue changes often aren't, in fact, tolerant per se, but rather completely oblivious that it's inaccurate, to the point newer fans like yourself
very seriously thought that Dogi had actually sealed Adol's lips with his fingertip in YsF in its English PSP release (which, as Wyrdwad revealed to us, got him scolded even internally, and, IIRC, admitted himself he thought he went too far on "that one").
Deuce as a translator AND editor simply never made those mistakes, and that, translation-wise, makes his works superior by definition, period. I assume Ys fans and potential Ys fans want to be interested in the Ys world, the lore, the characters, and some really dig knowing every single detail about everything possible, because, afterall, that's the entire point of a script. If you just care about gameplay, then you are naturally so unaffected, you could just go and play the Japanese original. Therefore, it's
critical that if you are going to localize a game, you keep the immersion and script intact, because that's there to win over the ones who are hooked by that. But their experience is ultimately compromised by them being taken away in their immersion, because some stupid girl spams you full-caps dialogue every time she touches you (YsC reference).
The fan English patch is finished, too, by the way, that's what this supplemental patch is for, which is to insert the ancient mural English text.
One more important thing, though: despite Deuce being consistently good in his translations
and in his editing, Wyrdwad once told me (or was it publicly in the old/new spam thread?) that Deuce, while he's a good
translator, he's not THAT good, and actually made some small translation mistakes, and that what Deuce actually
really excels at is
editing, which I can see being perhaps true. In fact, I do believe it's true, because I trust Wyrdwad's Japanese knowledge and translating capabilities, and I have witnessed
a lot throughout all those many years just how capable and knowledgeable Wyrdwad really is on the matter. If he didn't have as much "fun" as he does with the localizations, I'd probably pick Wyrdwad over Deuce any day, because even Deuce himself said, and that too a few years ago, that Wyrdwad was "getting really good / really getting the hang of it now". I find this important for me to clarify.
That pretty much summarizes it. We can extend this subject as much as you (and anyone else potentially interested) would like, I don't mind incase I'm as free as I am right now. It can be here or in PM, or we can drop it completely, I'm fine with it eitherway.
With all of that said, though, I'd like to say again that I still encourage the purchase of XSEED's localized Ys games, and I'm a supporter of theirs myself, owning their Ys Seven PSP release, Ys Celceta PSVITA release, and Ys I&II Chronicles+, YsF and YsORIGIN Steam releases. I support them with my purchases, because I want them to suXSEED (see what I did there? This is the kind of thing you may find in their scripts...), since I have always been an avid Ys fan since pretty much freaking
birth.
And thus, even if not being exactly ideal, I want them to keep localizing! Naturally, I always play my 200+ hours of their Ys games remaining skeptical 100% of the time when reading any text/dialogue, making the activity often more tiresome instead of being something relaxing, but I've long come into terms to live with that, and blame only myself for not yet knowing how to read Japanese. The point is, I will always need my Ys fix in a language I can understand! And I'm not alone, so I also encourage others to do the same as me, and keep buying/rebuying XSEED's stuff, even if I like keeping my thoughts on the matter pretty transparent, as I find honesty as much of a must.
