I recently started looking around for the best battle themes, and Tales of the Abyss has blown me away by the battle theme "Meaning of Birth". I think its one of the best by far, at least in my opinion. What do you guys consider an amazing, if not the BEST RPG battle theme. I wanna find the bestest one out there, and thus far this and Saga Frontier II for PS1, called Feldschlacht IV have the best themes. I guess ANY battle theme would do, cuz I luv the FFIV boss battle theme, it's classic and one of the best, I got the remake for DS just for that reason. It's also a masterful remake, something you don't usually get from "we don't really care about our fans and WONT make a true Crono trigger sequel" Square Enix these days.
Here is the Tales of the Abyss theme called... The Meaning of Birth?

The nostalgia, I know. xD *tap tap*
Well, as for the topic itself,... it's hard to decide "the best ones".
Since you mentioned TotA, the 1st of the three main battle themes is really good.

Noriyuki Iwadare's battle themes from Grandia II have yet to be toppled on my all time favorites list. That man knows how to write an epic battle track.
I definitely agree with FFIV's battle 2 being top material. True classic, that one. I don't think Uematsu's written a better battle theme yet. :)

Shame he didn't use that knowledge for Grandia 3's >_> Fight Ver.1, the regular battle theme, is still my favourite regular battle track ever, and is showing no signs of losing that position. My favourites generally come from Iwadare, Sakuraba, Gust's sound team, Sekito, and well, Falcom obviously. Speaking of which, seen as it doesn't say we can't! Probably one of my favourite battle themes, along with this one.

I always thought Final Fantasy IV and Growlanser II had the best battle music, especially Growlanser II:

Yes, this. Shame he didn't use that knowledge for Grandia 3's >_> Indeed. =/ Great Assize felt like a turn in the right direction... at the very end of the game... for half of the song... /sigh. Also! agH! I had no idea Masquerade of Lies was a battle song. FFFFFFFFFF I got to that track on the SnK 3rd OST and must've replayed it 30 times before I moved on to the rest of the soundtrack. How I wish I could understand that game. ;_; I don't even regard FFVIIIs music that highly in the series. While I did like Man with the Machine Gun when I played the game, I wouldn't put it at the top of my list. "The Landing" and "The Mission" are the only songs that have really stuck with me over the years. :)

Nah, IX all the way, man. That was his golden hour. X was pretty solid all around too, as far as his contributions to the final product go. :D

I'll contribute to the thread later with something relevant but for now, I must say, I really despise Man with a Machine Gun.
It's so bloody cheesy and reminds me too much of some sort of corny 70 - 80's music. That tune is the equivalent of running fingernails down a blackboard or scraping a fork across a ceramic dish to me.
ARGH. >___<#

You know, I just realized that I pretty much like every single battle tune in Seiken Densetsu 3. o_O
But the most memorable is the final boss theme (The Sacrifice (Part III):
Hirm, it sounds tinnier than I remember. :/
Here's the Mario Paint version too just because (since it's on YT):
The Sacrifice (Part II) is full of awesome as well. <3
I think I should rip the OSV before I send it off now. ^^;
----------------------
The Last Remnant - Sword Sparks:
----------------------
Kingdom Hearts II - A Fight to the Death (I remember this from being from the first chunk of the final boss battles):
----------------------
Gurumin - To Make the End of Digging:
----------------------
From Lufia II: The Rise of the Sinistrals:
Regular boss battle theme:
----------------------
Ys Origin - Scars of the Divine Wing:
Also, Termination (turn off Annotations to avoid spoilers. To do this, click on the up arrow and then the top icon - that turning page thing.):
Too lazy to correct the guy on the spelling of the game title and the pronunication bit. :P
----------------------
Other cool tunes: FFIV SFC/FFII SNES - Final boss tune~
I also share wyrdwad's love for the final boss theme from Zwei!! except I prefer the PC version. :B

Exactly why I love it. (: Corny 70s/80s music is the best music of all! Why do you think I love old JDK Band stuff so much? It's not ACTUALLY 80s music, but it sounds it, and I love it!! (: Yes but there is good corny and bad corny! That FFVIII tune falls into the latter in nunuuland! XD! Oh man! I forgot! Speaking about cheese, I must say that I really enjoy that Seymour battle tune (toward the end of FFX). The irony is that I was playing that fight around 2 AM in the morning so I had to keep the volume so low that I couldn't heard the awesomeness. I can't remember exactly why I didn't use headphones but I think using the C64 monitor had something to do with it. ^^

Have to say there's some pretty good stuff in nunuu's list. I prefer Gates of Hell from Remnant though.
I really need to get round to listening to the Kingdom Hearts OSTs. I didn't like the games one bit, but I've liked her compositions before and could do with some more. Really looking forward to the FF13 Versus OST from her, particularly.

I actually kind of liked FFVIII's Man with the Machine Gun.... :'D But then, I pretty much loved ALL of FFVIII's soundtrack! I think I actually particularly liked that track because... at the time it popped up, it was such a shockingly bouncy surprise after all the mild and serious toned stuff that had been going on till then?
But anyways, methinks almost everyone here has pointed out some of my most liked battle themes. (I really love that TotA theme that lindaluv pointed out! As well as FFIV's normal battle theme. And Saga Frontier II's Feldschlacht IV!!!)
But~
The one that is the best of them all~!
And then, since no one pointed these out - I really really liked this one particular battle theme in Chrono Cross.
And then the Innis fight theme from .hack//G.U.
(I'm sure there were more stuffs which I liked but since I can't seem to remember them right now... I guess they must not have been that great, ne? X'D)
Oh wait! I remember! This Xenogears battle theme! It used to play in some major boss-Gear fights, ne?

And then, since no one pointed these out - I really really liked this one particular battle theme in Chrono Cross. Oh yeah, forgot about this one. I loved it lots too. XD I remember liking the music for the second last(?) boss battle too. I liked disc 3 of the soundtrack quite a bit, actually! As for FFT, I liked that Run Past the Plains one or whatever it was called. I was so happy to hear it in the game! ^^ (I listened to the OST lots before I actually played it. XD) Oooh. I do like the Ultima battle music, especially from Ultima VI: The False Prophet!!! :3! I do believe there was one Grandia II battle tune I adored but I'll have to check the ones in this thread again to see if it's one of those. :B

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, now I'm remembering all manner of other awesome stuff.
FFT!
Aaaaaaaaand Chrono Cross :O
Oho, I gotta pre-empt this one, I really really like the Final Fantasy XIII battle music. It's mostly just nice background beats, but Hamauzu's little 20 second burst of high energy string beauty blows me away; really makes the song shine.

Ah yes, this is the one! :D And here is Run Past Through the Plain from Final Fantasy Tactics. So awesome~~~ ;___; And d0000000des, World Revolution from Chrono Trigger. <3 <3 <3Gothic Neclord from Suikoden II -- admittedly I like the one from Suikogaiden Volume 1 more but I can't seem to find it on YouTube. Battlefield without Light from Suikoden II as well. The FFIV Piano Collection Battle Medley XD!!!! (It has some improvision too though.) I love it so much. If I didn't suck so much at piano, I'd be able to play the entire thing. Instead, I only choose bits of it to play! XD Clash at the Big Bridge from FFV: And because I didn't post it last time. FEEL THE EPIC CHEESE: J-E-N-O-V-A (FFVII Advent Children version because IT IS AWESOMESAUCE): www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeeLDadND_YFire Emblem 3: The Last Stand. This is the arranged version from the Sound Memorium CD which, BTW, is awesomesauce as well: Well, actually, I don't care about the actual FE3 music that follows the 6 (I think) arranged tracks on the CD. XD Edit~~~ DDDDD: Red snuck in the FFT tune while I was doing this giant post. ^^~!

Dude, no joke about it... that song is awesome. I love its cheese factor, and the actual composition and instrumentation are simply outstanding! ... The singing's awful, but that kinda works for the song, somehow. -Tom Thats why I said it might infect you. I started off hating it like most people, but then it just grew on me to the point that I couldn't get enough. Next thing I knew I had it on my ipod an I was singing right along with it. Also I know you listed one, but pretty much all of the Digital Devil Saga battle themes are awesome
