I sent a similar message to Red Hairdo a few days ago, but I thought I'd post this in case anyone knows anything about this.
Back when I was recording the first part of Darm Tower for my Ys I Complete speedrun, I think I may have somehow stumbled onto a debug screen of sorts. Unfortunately, I have no idea what could have possibly triggered it, as I was just recording normal segment attempts.
I believe it happened when I had to bring up the inventory/equipment sub-screens to equip the Mask of Eyes/Blue Necklace/Silver Sword in segment 6 of the run. In a couple of instances, I remember seeing a brief flicker after exiting (or was it entering?) the sub-screen just before getting back to the action. Upon viewing the files frame-by-frame, it appeared that the flicker was actually another screen that had shown up very briefly.
It looked like something the programmers may have used. I remember seeing lines (the outlines for the text boxes, I think?), the 8 different "arrow" cursors that appear when using the mouse, the game's normal "feather" cursor, the menu buttons that appear at the bottom of the screen (using the mouse), and some other stuff I can't recall.
Unfortunately, I deleted the videos containing the screen, and it only happened a couple of times that I can remember. I don't recall it happening anywhere other than that segment, and I don't have any idea what could have caused it to pop up. I've tried to get the screen recorded again, but to no avail.
However, during my attempts, I've come across something else that may or may not be linked to the supposed debug screen.
I'm not entirely certain on the details, but it appears that if you load a sub-screen just as a text box appears on screen (which will result in having to press "ESC" to exit the sub-screens), a glitched sub-screen will pop up:
It looks like another program is interfering with the game, but if that's really the case, then the frame around the game screen should be distorted as well. As with the supposed debug screen, this appears for only a frame or two, and then the screen goes right back to normal. I wonder if there's a connection...?
So, does anyone know anything more about this? Is there a way to access a debug menu, and if so, how?
