Is the PS2 version even substantially different from the other versions? Ys III is fairly short and you shouldn't really have any trouble memorizing the sequence of events by now.

As far as the plot goes, it's essentially the same, yes. Though it seems to be very slightly more "polished". (As in, less dull.)
Anyway, yeah, you know Ys III, you can get through this version just fine.

You know we are solely talking about the game's script/dialogue, right?
I, for one, can't actually know it myself, since I don't really understand japanese. ... Though you can. And you played it. And if you did mean the script/dialogue just now, then may I ask: Why is that?
Despite not being able to understand japanese, I could see it all felt less "dry". The game's events didn't seem to have happened as quickly as the classical Ys IIIs (like when Dogi meets Elena in the beginning of the game), though not by a wide margin or anything. But anyway, it all felt more "spirited" to me. Not sure if it's only me though.

Aw, c'mon, you have to admit that the in-game graphics, at least, are prettier than in previous versions. And the voices are better than the Turbo Duo version (well, that's easy to do).
But, if the guy wants to play it in English, I'd go with the SNES.

Well, we all know that you and I don't agree about all aspects of the PS2 version of Ys III. So I won't go into that.
As for the polishment, again, I only was referring to the script. To me, the game IS much more polished in every aspect when compared to the classical Ys IIIs, but anyway, I didn't bring that up now. Just the script.
Anyway, yeah, no substantial differences in the script, then. ... If I want to know it any better, I ought to learn japanese... 'u.u It all comes down to that eventually.

Superficially, the graphics are better in the PS2 version... as in, they're higher-res, and technically more detailed. But artistically, I honestly think they're quite ugly. They look overly cartoony, and lack the style and atmosphere of the graphics found in the earlier versions of the game. And the voice-acting isn't noticeably better than what I've heard of the PC-Engine version's voicework, either (note that I'm comparing the Japanese language tracks here, NOT the English one, since the PS2 version *has* no English-language track). -Tom Yeah, I'm not a fan of the character art either, but just being on the PS2 makes it look better. Also, the background graphics look good in my opinion (even if there are some issues, like there being no volcano in the Ruins background, the lack of scrolling, and some other things). Also, I was comparing the English voices on the PCE (which are pretty bad) with the Japanese on the PS2. Admitedly, not being able to understand Japanese can make it sound better than it really is. I have a question for you, though. I always wondered if the text was different in the Japanese and American PCE's opening. The part where they show a blond haired guy who fought Galbalan (Demonicus!): they should be talking about Genos in that part, but in the American version they say it's Adol. So, does the Japanese version make more sense there?

I recall I read the US and Japanese versions of Ys III PCE had different intros, which was the initial reason for me to go after both.

According to what I read, the japanese version talks about the Galbalan and Genos legend, while in the US version, it talks about Adol's doings or something.

I used to have a .wav of the dialogue with Chester's "Let Elena go! She has nothing to do with this!" It became our secondary 'Die, monster! You don't belong in this world!" to joke about. Except no one else but the group of us got it. XD; I thought it was pretty hilarious. Oh, the English voices in that game are pretty awesome! Specially Elena's voice!

First message on 7 years. I'm disappointed. At least someone knows some way to hack this game files?? I know japanese (and we have english versions of this game everywhere), so I wanted some help just in the hacking part. I really don't know much about PS2 game data, so I'm little confused on some file format and what exactly to do with they (talking about .irx >.>) Oh, and don't ask why I'm doing this since I already know japanese and we have english versions all the place. It's a full secret. And yeah, I have a legal copy of Ys III: Wanderers from Ys disc for PS2.

Kdoxg, send let's chat about this some over PM. I may have some pull with this if you are interested in being a translator. I know of at least one hacker who was interested in the Ys IV PS2 version at least, but we also have a romhacking community that would likely be happy to take a look at the PS2 game files for you for Ys III. I also own it, so I can make my own rip if necessary.

I too would LOVE to see a translation of the PS2 version of Ys 3. I know that we have Oath in Felghana and I love that version, but there's just something special about side-scrolling Ys that I can't ever leave behind. Maybe it's because Ys 3 was my first Ys game and I fell so in love with the series because of it.
Unfortunately, I'm mostly worthless at helping with the rom hacking, however I would be MORE than happy to help with QA/Testing. I also own a legit copy of the PS2 version and a modded North American PS2 (which I modded solely for this game...) so I can test on actual hardware if needed. Feel free to PM me if you're looking for volunteers.
I do program, so I could...maybe help with the rom hacking IF someone was able to provide me with some (lots of) guidance. I pulled up Ys 3 in PCSX2's debugger a few years ago, but I couldn't figure out a good way to locate and dump the script files, though I didn't look TOO hard into it.

Hi Illuminerdi! I'm not 100% sure we could help, but you might consider posting your interest in learning how to get started with hacking PS2 games over at Romhacking.net, GBATemp, or our own Romhacking community over at HeroesofLegend.org. If we can help, I'm sure someone might take a look at the files.
