Truner I know what you mean, to an extent. Seeing projects that are just cleaned up google translate always leave me scratching my head wondering why even bother. I think the hacking still needs to be there for a really good fan translation though. I can handle all caps and full width font with a good translation but the problem isn't with just that. The problem is even with great translators if there isn't enough support on the hacking side there are the usual problems of not enough space to fit the text and not enough screen real estate so those kind of translations usually end up making sacrifices by removing unnecessary dialog or using awkward abbreviations. Or just dropped all together if the translator understandably isn't willing to make those sacrifices. You can have a fan translation with just one side of it but you really can't have a great fan translation without both.

WOW! This is amazing news! Awesome stuff Gideon! Thanks a lot for the update and your continued hard work with this. Ys V in English I have one question, though. Let's say someone is interested in translating Ys V into another language and decides to contact with you. You think it could be possible or it would be too much work that there's probably no point in thinking about it? BTW, if you need any playtesters, this board is plenty of people who would love to help

I don't want to downplay how awesome this is, because it is awesome, but I read on Ghideon's twitter that it's only for Ys 5 Vanilla. I haven't played the original, but Expert is easier than OiF on normal, so people are going to want to use the English for their first play before moving onto the definitive version.

To address a few concerns... -No, the patch will not work on Ys V Expert. While most of the hacks can be applied to Expert, the data is different enough that the task of porting the code over is non-trivial, and I'm frankly sort of sick of looking at the thing. This isn't to say that an Expert patch won't happen, I just don't want to commit myself to anything and then possibly disappoint people who are waiting for it. -On the subject of non-English versions of the patch, again, the job is a non-trivial task. This isn't to say that I'm not open to the idea, but I'm not going to be the one to do the hacking for it, and I usually require the people doing the technical aspects of an international edition to prove that they're capable enough to handle any issues that arise on their own. Again, Ys 5 has been a nightmare to work with, and I've got enough on my plate that I can't be fielding questions about why things may or may not be working. -On the subject of space, we *are* coming up against some space restrictions occasionally. Ys 5's text is compressed, and is further packed in between blobs of assembly instructions inside each compressed binary, which leaves basically no space for expansion. However, we were fortunate that the original text storage was 16 bits per character. I've hacked it down so that the English is 8 bits per character with extra multi-byte lookups; we average about 5 to 6 bits per character. So while we're still running up against storage space walls occasionally, the overflow is usually not more than a half a dozen bytes or so. This is compared to SRW2 on the NES where I had to find ways to deal with overflows approaching a kilobyte in size. (This, incidentally, is an issue that any international version will have to address. There's absolutely no space in the font for accented characters; any space reclaimed in the font for said characters will decrease the efficiency of the current text storage, resulting in in more and worse overflows.) -The Ys IV fix has been done for quite a while, but I want the game re-tested before I launch an update. I've sent it off to a bunch of people, most of whom never touched it

Are you wanting someone to test Ys IV on hardware or emulator. If on emulator I'll gladly play through the game this weekend, before if able. If on hardware I've been waiting on an excuse to get infiniteneslives hi/lo repro cart. Does Ys IV use special chips?

This shouldn't be a concern now as bsnes has been completed (and merged into higan). bsnes does everything the hardware would do, thus a playtest wouldn't really need anything other than it. You just can't let me have an excuse to buy that repro board can you? Speaking of Higan though. I do have a 4.5 ghz sandy bridge which should just about be enough.

Eh, I have a subpar Samsung notebook from years ago and it works just fine. Fast too. That aside Gideon Zhi, if you want people to take your patch apart, make love to it and discover the dirty little secrets it might hold, you might as well just give some of us the patch file and you can bet your life on it that we will deliver. Ultimately, fans are the best at this. That's why I'm always looking for Mega Man fans for my project. BSNES used to be notorious for requiring very powerful processors at least for the accuracy builds. Is this no longer the case? I haven't used it since it became higan. What Mega Man game are you working on? Language? What about megaten?

It's done, folks. Blurb follows. Aeon Genesis has, at long last, released their translation of Ys 5: Kefin, Lost Kingdom of Sand. Until now, this was the last story in the lengthy Ys history to not be told in English in some form or other. I'm super proud of how this one came out, folks! This is the best and thank you. Not getting the Vita/Celceta until Christmas, so this fits in just perfect. Seeing this released was sudden joy. Didn't really expect it so soon. Saw the post but thought "Hey, if it's out by then great, if not, no biggie." Turning on the PC today was a pleasant surprise. Thank you again.
My family won't be thanking you. My mom's house will be something like this... "What are you doing. Come visit with your family!" "No MOM! I'm playing Ys(eece)!" Then the family says what the hell is Ys? "The best thing you never heard of, now leave me alone!" then they wisper to my mom "Is he on drugs?" This will be one of the most memorable thanksgivings ever!

I did not fix the bridge glitch, no. As a further note about glitches in the original game, using the Sandstorm spell on the little ice ball enemies in Kefin Underground crashes the game. I've confirmed that this behavior occurs in the Japanese version, and I'm generally not in the business of fixing bugs in the original game.
As far as outsourcing goes, as I've stated before, I wouldn't hand the tools over to anyone I knew wouldn't be able to use them properly, and I don't know very many people who fit that criteria.

Playing through the English version of this game, I don't see why Ys V has received so much flak. It has such a unique and great story! I love the themes and elements included into this game, and the gameplay is pretty good too (despite some stuff movement).
