Don't worry, it's on-topic enough; one will have to learn japanese to fully enjoy Ys V anyway. =p

Oh, cool. Plenty of other boards aren't big fans of going off-topic. I guess this is just a freaking awesome message board. Everyone get your sunglasses for a photo-op!

So I got Hex Workshop and opened up Ys 5, see a bunch of japanese characters but I think translating would be much more involved than just replacing those characters. I wish I knew more about hacking, then I would help on translating this game.
The language barrier is keeping me from playing this game, since I can't really find a good walkthrough for it, or am I missing it somewhere? Same with Origin, I started playing it but just got pissed that I don't know what's really going on, but at least there is a patch in the future for that game. I can wait... But too bad Ys V is a lost cause.

Hm, ever tried replacing ALL those japanese characters with garbage like "fghidfgfbsd"? If you did so and the game played smoothly, it'd mean it's a simple job? Wishful thinking here, but who knows...

But too bad Ys V is a lost cause. I was able to play through the game using the Faq listed in Gamefaqs. I didn't get stuck once, and found only one boss was difficult. The sad thing is the FAQ is not very descriptive as to what is going on plotwise, so you will have to create your own story using imagination.

Dudes... So me and my GF are coming to the end of Ys IV and we wanna get to grips with this new looking title. Having read this thread I notice a lot of peeps praising this game highly. I am a gamer so I can appreciate game mechanics and get by with a limited appreciation of the Japanese language, however my GF is all about the story elements (Dogi is HOT etc... lol). Anyways is there a decent 'script' or 'text translation' of this title to satisfy both my lust for gaming and my GF's lust for story/Dogi... (I've whetted her appetite regarding the love story as mentioned in a previous post on this thread)? My biggest mistake with Ys IV was to not get the script of the cut scenes. I've got it now though..... lol..... It sounds like there is a Beta of the english trans out there. Is it available for download at all??? More than 50% is good enough for me!! Looking forward to seeing this game in action!!

There are strategy guides for it on GameFAQs if you need help figuring out where to go and what to do -- but as far as a script/story translation goes, you really won't find anything of use. I've beaten it but I'm still in the dark as to what exactly went down verbally, aside from what I've seen.

Thats a bit of a crying shame! I am deffo gonna play this game though without a doubt so just thought I would ask. I am looking forward to it...... Its pretty tragic really because I am now going back to work after the holidays and I can now only get my Ys fix in an evening..... Ouch! Slightly off topic.... I am nearly at the end of Ys IV for sure but I am really looking forward to having a go at the: - *****SPOILER***** Developer's Room *****SPOILER***** ..... When I complete it! (lol at the spoiler bit...) Is the above really a spoiler? Doesn't everyone know about it anyway.....? Really looking forward getting to grips with Ys V!

Is the above really a spoiler? Doesn't everyone know about it anyway.....? I didn't know about it. Is that in MotS or DoY? I started Ys V Expert last month after finishing MotS and Ys SEVEN and.. yeah, disappointing is the word for it. I've had zero urge to continue playing it past the first hour I've put into it. Especially when you consider that the SNES had a lot of better action RPGs available for it

Developer's Room ---> DoY only
And, yeah, it's certainly NOT a spoiler. xD

Whoa! Pretty interesting to see all the various 'takes' on the game here. I almost always never let a 'review' or 'opinion' on a game sway my decision to play it. Ys V interests me not so much for the story as for the gameplay mechanics (which apparently are pretty varied, interesting and engrossing) and so for that reason alone I am quite desperate to play it. Getting back on track with the thread: I would consider it the cherry on the cake for some kind of english patch/script/angle on Ys V if only to add depth to the game mechanics. This concept might 'rattle a few cages' (great proverb ) here but I think that the other Ys prequels have the story there to back up the gameplay. In all honesty, playing through Ys I's Darm Tower and Ys II's Solomon's Shrine as an example, well they just wouldn't have been the same without the amazing story and character. I think a lot of the polarising of Ys V Kefin comes from two distinct camps. One of a gamesplayer/otaku-type and the other more driven by story. I am pretty certain (and I am happy to be countered on this.... ) that most of the 'nay-sayers' or 'doubters' of Ys V Kefin would be swayed back to playing it through again with an english update. I personally am looking forward to playing this game if only for a change of pace in the game style. Having said that Ys IV is pretty amazing and varied despite the linearity of the maps (which were masked exceptionally well by... the story!! lol, oh and its pacing which I think is probably the best i've encountered so far!) I think that translation in general opens up a whole box of ideas and concepts about RPG's and especially Adventure RPG's. Strip the story and the pacing of that story away and what are you left with? Does the game still warrant playing through despite the lack of it?!?? A moral question: Are you a gamer or a watcher? (or listener... or both... lol)

Ironically, I thought SoM blew compared to Ys V. Ys V has better hit detection, controls, pacing, probably story (infact, most likely story), and BGM. All Mana has? Just the pretty artwork. Boo-frickety-hoo!

As far as your "easiest" comment goes, THAT'S why Falcom made Ys V EXPERT! You should've played that one instead!

When you hit an enemy in Ys V, the actual collision detection is right ON the weaponry, right where it *should* connect between baddie and weapon! In SoM? Let's give an example: the whip. The whip's collision is somewhere at the very end, I can't tell if it's angled, or just very, VERY picky, but I can't seem to hit SHIT with that thing! In Ys V, when you press a direction, you MOVE. In SoM, you fucking crawl. In Ys V, the menu is simplified, whereas SoM's menus are entirely TOO convoluted, too many rings and sub-rings, and EVERY FUCKING CHARACTER has their own ring and sub-rings! Navigating those POS menus is a real hassle! By the way, did you honestly forget you had a shield? Use it! If the control setup itself wasn't good enough for you, Falcom actually gave you the option to set it up yourself, to your liking! PLUS, they also allow you to "temp save", anywhere you want! Kindof like save states today, except they only last until you shut the SNES/SFC off! I can't think of anything in SoM that was done better than it was in Ys V! Besides, I'm GLAD I don't see "MISS" when you can plainly see that your sword fucking CONNECTED with the enemies in Ys V! But that shit happens ALL THE TIME in SoM!!! ...Am I irritable? Wow... anyway, I compared my oranges to your apples, let's just say we have our difference of opinion here. You know I hate SoM, I know you don't really like Ys V. It's all good. XD

I can't see how you could miss enemies in Ys V like that. As Red would put it, that's more of a player issue than a game issue; of course, Red also used that argument in SoM's defense. Different strokes for different folks could hold true here as well. I've never once had any difficulty hitting anything in Ys V. The only difficulty I've ever had, was the waterfall scene -- and that could be chalked up to just one horrible screen, I believe you agreed with me on this. Platforms that you're supposed to jump on should NOT be off-screen! Everything else was practically flawless, in my book. Your argument about missing, however, again; I experience BOTH problems in SoM. Bad hit detection because I'm one pixel off (or ten pixels off, but how the hell would *I* know?!), AND failed rolls. It's BULLSHIT. In Ys V, I've experienced *neither*; because I know how the system works, and essentially *how to play the game*. I'll give you jumping, yes. That is a bit finicky; I can't argue its questionable jump-physics, as I said, the waterfall has made that all too apparent. I still prefer the cross-menu to the ring-menu. It was simplified and there's only one said menu, whereas there were several annoying slowly-loading ring menus in SoM. I couldn't have disliked them any more than I do to this day. I mean, think about it, on one ring, you have a "weapon select" menu, which opens up another ring. When I first started out, I was like "okay, so where the fuck are my ITEMS?!" -- I had no idea I was supposed to press up or down. Then they did the same fucking thing with magic, and I feel like I'm forgetting one more thing -- it was VERY disorganized. I cringe at the thought of another game using the same fugly system! ...is the one in Odin Sphere really AS horrendous as the one in SoM?! I'm starting to regret putting that on my wishlist... I'll let you have saving too. Ys is Ys, not some horrible ARPG where you can only save at an Inn... wait, what game was that?! OMG no, it's SoM!!! UGH!!! THE HORROR!!! One thing they both got wrong!!! ...but Ys V still did it better. Ys V's temp saves are infinitely better than SoM's "die and return to the Inn" saves.
