Wyrdwad hit it on the head there, Brandish is a series that requires you to understand it on its own terms before you can like it. But when it clicks you're in for some highly addicting fun. The difference between the PSP and SNES version is that once you understand the series mechanics and stuff, the PSP version is just perfect, while the SNES still has a few weird issues. As for Red, I really understand why you disliked it. First of all, the game and instructions/tutorial are in Japanese. Then the game presents you with this odd camera system and stiff controls. When you still push further you find tons of items that you have no idea what to do with and get lost in the maze-like RUINS. Brandish throws lots of confusing stuff your way, and coupled with the language barrier that's just plain overwhelming. Luckily, there's this guy that understood that and wrote up some text that pays extra detail to all the game mechanics. Because only once you get that down, Brandish goes from unintuitive and disorientating to immersive and enjoyable. At its core, Brandish isn't about killing monsters or simply finding the exit: it's about exploring the dungeon to the best of your ability and live to tell the tale. As much as with a platformer, this stands or falls by virtue of the area design, which thankfully is brilliant. Brandish is in many ways a battle against the game designer. There are subtle details everywhere alerting you of a coming trap or the solution to a puzzle. The question is if you're able to pick up on those hints. The cool thing about Brandish in this context is that it teaches you to play the game by a set of strict rules, but sometimes catches you completely off guard by creating a situation where what you learned to do will get you ruthlessly stuck! These mindgames are really what keeps the tension up for me, this battle to try and outwit the game designer himself! So yeah, I say hit that RETRY button armed with a new mindset!

Yeah, Sardien definitely said it best. And even though I couldn't really get into the SNES version of Brandish, I found Dark Revenant to be one of my top 10 favorite games of all time, especially in terms of game play. It was an absolutely mind blowing action-meets-puzzle solving experience in that regard.
And...
Just when you think you've seen all there is to see, there's bonus content you can unlock which takes everything you think you know about Brandish's gameplay and flips it (And you, the player) on it's head causing you to learn even more game mechanics that build more and more on what you've previously become accustomed to and that's when the REAL fun begins.
Sardien and I pretty much agree on the final bonus dungeon as being the absolute best level in the game.
Also the music, atmosphere and characters are great!

Makes me happy to see so much talk about this!
I've started to have fun doing lets-plays on youtube, partially to show off Ys games to friends to pique their interest, and seeing that I might be able to understand more than just the katakana is an awesome notion.

I hope it's true but we are already in 2011 (lol!) Aeon genesis should cooperate with other translators and hackers but he prefer not sharing his project with other persons.

Just a hopeful estimate. I was hoping he would release the 80% patch somehow, just that would be fine to enjoy Ys V!

It's probably worth linking to this thread: seldane.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=ysV&thread=4135&post=133823Just because it says 80%, doesn't mean it is playable. The game has the text inserted, but hasn't been reworked so that it is happy about it, and crashes upon menu entry, among other things. If a patch was released in its current state, it wouldn't be very helpful. Just be patient, it'll happen when it happens. And for something a bit more recent, (December 2010): "Ys 5 is definitely not forgotten. I just have a few other things that are of higher priority right now :/ "

Alright, I suppose I'd better leave this here too... Time for some before-and-after. One of these is how the game looked yesterday. One is today. I'll leave it up to you to figure out which is which.

The left one is how it looks today, right? Awesome! I see you've finally managed to free the game from the prominent bug which renders it as a fairly normal looking action RPG, and have restored it to its true glory as a wild, nightmarish breakdown of both Ys and the RPG genre in general. Adol's journey through the fearful land of Glitchonia is a chapter all too often overlooked by Ys fans. Seriously, though, that's really awesome! I speak Japanese anyway, but I have so much respect for the amazing amount of work you put into your various projects, and I'm sure you'll be making a number of people here very happy indeed.

YES! Ys 5! Now if we could only get a version of Ys 4 with Deuce's translation and no bugs...

The Ys IV MOTS patch only has 3 bugs. and the last one is the only one that's annoying since you can't save and reload due to the boss battle right after it.
Anyway, thank you Gideon. I've been waiting for Ys V since I finished your first Ys IV patch back in '01
