I also didn't...like the Ys SEVEN Soundtrack. I couldn't say a better word, but it's not that I think it's bad. It's just not great. I'd give it a 32/40 or 30/40. How can I put it, I'd say it's one of these soundtracks I wouldn't care if it wasn't in my MP3 Player. Knowing myself, I'd say most part of the reason were the instruments used, kind of like adoru. I didn't like most of the synths, etc. etc. etc. Then again, just like wyrd stated, it could be that I just don't like those, while most people do...although I do like some soundtracks in that style...oh well. When I knew of Ys SEVEN, I was automatically expecting something in the lines of Origin, Felghana and Sora no Kiseki. And like nunuu, one of the problems I had with the soundtrack was it being forgettable in a way. Composition wise, I liked the soundtracks...though I only really remember a few of them. If Falcom ever does a "live" ver. of it, I guess I'd start to look at it with better eyes. And also, even though I said all this stuff, this is clearly a case of something just "not working" for me. For some reason which I still can't clearly explain, this soundtrack didn't appeal for me like many others did (including from non-Falcom games). Listening to it outside of the game, it reminded me of RomaSaGa 3.

And my current favorite song on the soundtrack? The one I absolutely CANNOT stop listening to? This one - the first wind dungeon theme. Sooo pretty... it's like a successor to the Water Prison theme from Ys Origin... It's actually one of my favorites, too.

I mean, that whiny MIDI-sax on the post-eathquake Altago field theme? Argh. I have to just turn that stuff down. That's how I felt about half of the music in Dawn of Ys. I've only listened to a few of the songs in 7 to keep the others new... but from what I've heard I kind of agree with both sides of this little debate. IMO the songs that aren't synthed are usually superior to the ones that are but at the same time some of the synthed ones are a delight to listen to in their own right. From what I've been reading, it seems like the gameplay is pretty freaking fun (which is the majority of the Ys experience... the remainder being pretty much the music ). I was going to buy Ys7 when it finally comes ashore but it does my heart good to read the good reviews.

SEVEN is the closest thing to the perfect RPG that I have ever played. That's the best way to put it.

Since there's apparently two brand new members of Falcom Sound Team jdk, I mentally blame them for the less inspired tracks! Harsh?!

Well, to be fair, adoru, if you're going to compare any of Ryo Yonemitsu's works with ANYTHING else, ever, whatever you compare it with will look as if it sucks REALLY. HARD.
You just can't compare anything with Ryo Yonemitsu. xD All is obsolete before this guy's stuff.

I've always had different favorites than most people on Ys soundtracks
Ys I : Dreaming, Palace of Destruction Ys II: Battleground, Palace of Salmon(MY FAVORITE Ys SONG EVER(specifically the TCD one) Ys III/Oath: Steeling the Will to Fight, Trading Town of Redmont, Illburns Ruins Ys IV: Bronze District, Blazing Sword(SNES version), Field (SNES version) Ys V: In the Cradle, Charged Trial Ys VI: Gratitude for Nature's Blessings, Mighty Obstacle, Ultramarine Deep Ys Seven: Port Town Altago, Shannoa Forest, Cylos Mountains, 1v1 Boss Fight
Honestly, while I don't listen to it as much outside the game as I do with the other games, I think that contextually Ys Seven definitely has the strongest soundtrack. None of the songs really feel interchangeable, each one is tailored to fit a specific moment or area so carefully that I think it works wonderfully. Some may not like that it's not as in your face as the older games, but for a game like this, I think it was a good decision. Plus, Altago Plains 2 is probably the most Ys-ish world map theme they've had since First Step Towards Wars. I LOVE it. It's 2 parts Ys, 1 part Gundam Wing in the best way possible
So...yeah
One thing I notice on my second playthrough of Seven that's kind of a bummer is that they seem to try so hard to force you NOT to use Adol during the first half of the game. It feels like everyone's either weak to Strike or Pierce attacks, never slash. I know you want to make me try people out, but fuck, I wanna play as the main character, let me be.

I think so too Wyrd; Seeing how good of a choice Hudson made by hiring Ryo Yonemitsu and witnessing the huge success of all Ys PCE games, Falcom probably took the opportunity and hired him for those.

alot of the Perfect Collection Ys IV songs sound like they were arranged based on the SNES versions though

And I would pay no money until I sample the thing and discover that it has some good tracks. :P

If it comes out as good as Origin's SAV, you KNOW I'll buy it thrice over.

If it comes out as bad as Felghana's SAV, you KNOW I'll buy it (for the good of Falcom) and burn it (for the good of Music ).

Boooooooo!! I actually REALLY LIKED Felghana's SAV! Never understood why people hated it so much. :( Yer tastes have always been somewhat eccentric. XD

Uhm, ok, can someone illuminate the ignorant (me) and tell me what a SAV is or what it stands for?

Super Arrange Version! le edite: My only qualm with the Felghana one is how they took an awesome song like Searing Struggle and made it bad. It's one of the most intense, driving songs on the OST and they slowed it down to no good effect! The SAV version of Prayer for Kindness is <3, though.

The Premonition track, I forgot about that one... >_> The piano arrangement was SO PRETTY and then the guy starts singing and I get all sad. Do not like.

I never thought the Prelude to the Adventure and Redmont arrangement was newscast-y before - I can't get that thought out now! Blast!
