Hi everyone,
Well I started playing Ys 5 and I'm having more fun than I expected but not knowing what's going on is a little bit of a bummer. Right now I'm at that stupid bull thing that charges you and beats the crap out of you. I've hit this thing like 50 times and can't beat him yet. Guess I'll have to save up for some more equipment I don't know.
Why you have to exchange jewels for gold is a pain too. I mean how are you supposed to know how much money you're earning? I miss the good ole being able to save anywhere in the game too. Going through the whole getting magic ability and going to fight the stupid bull boss is getting annoying.
Even if there were save points in this game it would make it better. I don't know, if I really like this game yet, fighting monsters in the field are fun like the other Ys games so far and the first boss wasn't too bad.
Anyone have tips on that stupid bull boss?

I tried to use a hit and run method, but I still just kept getting hit, due to his quickness. Since you can use healing items during bosses, he shouldn't be too hard with a couple of them.
Here is my most recent fight with him:

Are you talking about on the emulator or the game itself? I'm not playing it on an emulator I'm playing it on the SNES console itself.

I think he's trying to describe the story and the gameplay, in a way that only he understands. This game is *nothing* like Secret of Evermore. As a matter of fact, I think SoE is a LOT worse than SoM. "Hurk! This reminds me of irrelevant fictional B-movie reference! Durrr, except it's nothing like that! Oh hay, I'm talking to myself again! Derp derp!" I've played halfway through SoE, and let me tell you, the dialogue *doesn't* improve at all beyond that point. More fictitious B-movie references, more talking to oneself aloud, and more contradicting oneself. Blend that in with Secret of Mana's clearly imperfect, faulty, horrible engine, add a touch of alchemy and what do you get?! "Game of the Year!" *headdesk*

I'm guessing he thinks he's describing what Terra's doing in that video, except that he would be wrong since she's in on the scam to separate do-gooding red-haired idiots from their money. I'm not sure though, the fact that he switches subjects three times in the same sentence makes it hard to figure out exactly what he's talking about at any one point. Of course, he also seems to consider this game non-canonical so I really don't know why he's bothering...
As for Evermore, the less said about that turd the better. Why they thoight that would be a good idea I haven't a clue but for some reason they made that and didn't translate Seiken Densetsu 3, which was the pretty much the last Mana game worth playing as far as I'm concerned. Well, Legend was okay except for the godawful equipment forging system that made no goddamn sense.

I loved Secret of Evermore. I only finished it once, so maybe it was the music that kept me going? I remember looking forward to the sequel that never happened, and I made sure I let Jeremy Soule know how awesome his music was in it. I know the game doesn't have a lot of music, but what is there is totally ruling. I named my character Tarf.

The OST cover art's pretty weird though, right? I think so, anyway.

It's scary, I don't even know why they did that.

Secret of Evermore was one of the better titles I've owned. Ah nostalgia. COME OUT ON VIRTUAL CONSOLE ALREADY. I'll buy you.

That game looks awesome. I'm cracking up at some of these fictitious B-movie references.

You know, the main character reminds me of Smithee. Somewhat. Smithee isn't so annoying, granted, but they're basically the same kinds of people. ...but the game is still god-awful and those fictitious B-movie references made me roll my eyes. The ambience was annoying, the dialogue was annoying, the gameplay was somehow WORSE than Secret of Mana's, there are absolutely *no* redeeming qualities in it. I don't care about the adventures of "A Boy and his Dog". That plotline is incredibly weak and understated. It should also be known that I *HATE* prehistoric-era (as well as *most* high-tech Trekkie stuff) characters and writing. With that said, yes, there is actually one part of Chrono Trigger I hate, as well. Friggin 65,000 B.C. was it? I hate dinosaurs with a passion. I like Greek mythology and roman-era stuff, but usually ONLY when Sam Raimi is involved. Otherwise than that, some high-school Greek mythology reading is good too. Anything like Indiana Jones and The Mummy is generally good.

Ahh, the Prehistoric. Why do we have guns for sale, you ask? Uhh, hey look, a hot girl in a fur bikini! Actually, aside from feeling slightly cheated by the awesome-looking map full of places you can't visit, I liked that era.

Some parts were cool, namely the ... *forgets*... "Tyranos Lair"? That's all that comes to mind.

Burn, Bobonga!
Back to the topic a bit, I can't read Japanese, so I won't be playing 5 until either Gideon Zhi releases the patch already or Falcom+XSeed miraculously publishes it and Ys 4.

Well, Falcom's got no motivation to republish the SNES games so I assume you're thinking a remake? Between multiplatform Seven, 'Oath in Celceta' and any non-Ys games Falcom wants to make in the meanwhile, I'd say, oh, 2014 would be a good bet. I suspect the patch just might come out first.
And yeah, if you can't read Japanese V is probably the game you can most afford to skip in the franchise. The story is the best thing about it; music and gameplay, not so much. Not bad, just not as awesome as everything else.

If they ever did remake IV, I'd personally fly out to Japan and somehow force them to put the jdk Band Spring 2008 version of The Dawn of Ys in it.
