I found a used Ys6 for the PSP cheap and decided to buy it today. When I popped it into my PSP, I noticed it seemed to have somewhat laggy loadtimes as well as a fairly poor framerate. I played for a little and when I leveled up for the first time it stalled for a second before running the little level up animation (though every level afterwards played fine). Also the menu screen had small text as though they just shrunk down the PC version to fit on a PSP screen.
So on to my question... is Ys7 similar in these aspects? Does it run better because it was designed for the PSP and they put more time into it, or is this just the hardware being slow and Falcom not being able to do anything about it. Right now, I'm chalking up the poor performance to the game being a port... but seeing as how I'm getting Ys7 for Christmas, I won't be able to see how they compare for myself for some time.
Thanks.

PSP port --> "Crap" (pretty much)
NO WAY you can compare it with Ys SEVEN. You will see it for yourself, rest assured.

Ok, good. I was getting a little worried.

I'm not sure if I'm doing any good by pointing out such a thing or not, but... well, not even those issues Wyrdwad just brought up are present if you run the game with Custom Firmware and an ISO. *shot* And using a PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 can also help out. Just saying.

I'm kinda biased toward Ys VI PSP since it's basically what got me into the series, but I definitely agree that SEVEN is much better. Wyrdy pretty much nailed it.
Also, I find it hilarious that some people are complaining about the game's graphics, when A) graphics shouldn't matter in the first place, unless they're so muddy that you can't see anything, or you're a really bad excuse for a 'gamer,' and B) Ys VI PSP looked like vomit anyway.

I guess my next question should be, how was Ys Chronicles? Presumably the same?

Mutagene: That's why I wrote "crap" between those marks: Ys VI PSP actually has A LOT of pluses, and most of the problems sgp6 has experienced with Ys VI PSP aren't present at all if you run the game using custom firmware and image file. But still, it remains true that it and Ys SEVEN can't be compared at all; the port could have been better. sgp6: Unfortunately no; the framerate is rather low, and sometimes, though rarely, you will experience slowdowns, and those are issues not even CFW + game image can solve. However, it still pretty much is Ys I-II COMPLETE/ETERNAL that we all love and enjoy for you to take anywhere you want. edit: wyrd stepped in faster

My PSP is modded and I play all my games from the memory stick, so Ys VI wasn't that bad. But CFW can only take you so far, so I'm never replaying another version than the PC version. I didn't notice any slowdowns in Ys Chronicles, though. You did overclock the XMB and Game CPU, right?
By the way, just to clear something up, even though I always use an ISO to play from my memory stick, I still buy games from time to time, if it's a project I wanna show my support for. I bought Half-Minute Hero and Gurumin, for example, and I'd buy Ys 7 if that was released here.

Eventually, if it turns out there's no hope of a localization, I will. I really would prefer playing it in English, though.

Hold out for the PC version dude!

Playing on the PC is a last resort for me. I strongly dislike doing it, so if it performs just as well on the PSP, I'd much sooner choose that. Only if the PC version got localized and the PSP version didn't would I opt for a PC version, and we all know THAT isn't going to happen.

Oh, well if that's true, I'll probably play them both. Though if the difference are negligible, I'll either pirate it or just not play the PC version.

Do you play Ys games with your keyboard? I just don't like gaming with my keyboard, but I'm too much of a miser to buy some weird custom joystick.

Using an adapter with a PS2 controller is my favorite way to play games on the PC.

In that case, I can most likely just directly hook up my PS3 controller as well. Hmm.

I use the official Sega Saturn USB PC controller for all my PC gaming, and it ROXXORZ!!!!
Immaturity aside, it really is a fantastic controller for 2d PC gaming, and I've even enjoyed using it on PSO.

Thanks for the info, all. I think the only correct answer to which version I should get is... all of them. I just put Ys 7 and chronicles on my christmas list so I'll definitely have the PSP version. I can't see why I wouldn't go for the PC version as well though. *Imagines crisp, beautiful PC Ys7* Oh, yeah, that's the stuff.

Ys VI PSP isn't bad; it's just that it isn't the best Ys VI version. xD
And, agreed, were it not for Ys VI, I probably wouldn't have a PSP today.

I think when Konami ported it to the PSP, they just opened the configuration file and turned everything down. It was a difficult transition going from the PC version with everything turned up as high as possible.
One thing I did notice about it was they added a few extra items and have those 'Sealed Cave' sidequests that I've never had the pleasure of experiencing yet.
