Has any PC Ys game ever been released that has potential for modding/editing/adding content? I always thought Ys would be awesome if they included any editor given how short the games often are. Ys 6, OIF and Origins all used the same engine... Are these games hardcoded and impossible to mod/edit It'd be great if a 3rd party editor or some kind of tools could be developed...

I imagine no one has really looked into modding or developing tools for YS6... would really be sweet. I wonder what the developers own toolkit would look like...

Well, I have heard from kiyuki there are doujin games that pretty much use the Ys VI engine. So, who knows.
Modding Ys VI and the others would be very interesting, though.

Modding Zwei 2 engine would be pure childs play once you learn what each of the numbers mean (The code is even commented to tell you when it's a ... emoticon, or a ! and so on!)
Scripts for events, encounters, what files to load for what models...I think ultimately it would just be knowing how to create models with the same bone setup...

Scripts for events, encounters, what files to load for what models...I think ultimately it would just be knowing how to create models with the same bone setup... That wouldn't be that hard to do, so if anyone does get far enough along to either be able to mod Zwei 2 or Ys VI, I could create a few models with riggs and textures sometime and we could try it out to see how it looks in the game. However, I was always under the impression that what we were seeing in the games were already pre-rendered 3D models that had been animated and saved out as a 2D frames. That's what gives the models a little more of a "painted" uniqueness to how they look. But, yeah, I'd totally be down for helping with that. I'm thinking of creating more Falcom-style models anyway at some point. Edit: For Example, this is Fieg from a Xanadu game project that Unsavory and I are working on, or will continue working on at some point. : ) -Thomas

Yes, the Ys engine is just 2d sprites rotated in 3-d according to camera angles.
Just saying you could make a Ysy story with Zwei 2's engine it seems.

Somehow, I can picture Fieg with a brooch or a talisman on his cape, in place of the folds. What do you think?

I think the final version that was animated had a brooch or clasp on the cape. I just loaded up a quick version for show.
Thanks for pointing those games out Wyrd, as the ones that use actual models. Looks like we should focus on those engines first unless someone can figure out the way they've setup the 2D pre-rendered sprites of the 3D characters.

Ah, that'd explain it! I knew I must've seen something there before! It really doesn't look the same without it. Very nice detail!

Yeah, Zwei 2 is full 3D. No 2D sprites anywhere to be seen. I think the only Falcom games that exist with 3D character models instead of 2D sprites are Zwei 2, Xanadu Next, Gurumin, and Ys Seven. -Tom Hmm... what about Vantage Master Japan?

If VMJ and VMP are really so similar, I'm pretty sure that VMJ also uses 2D sprites on a 3D battleground.

(laughs) The only thing that is textured is the woodgrain texture on the shield. Everything else is just built in materials (mats). If we do still use him, I think I'm going to build a new rig for him. The left arm which holds the shield gets a little screwy when animating or posing him. -Thomas
