I drove 40 miles to get YsI and II (Complete) and was really excited loading them up. It all seems to load well but I got some VERY beginnerish questions: 1) Nowhere is there a mention of an 'attack' key. I was expecting maybe Z or Enter to attack...but...it seems like the way I attack is to 'bump' into mobs. What am I missing here? (I got sword, shield and armor equipped). 2) I took a quick look at a walk-through to see if maybe someone would mention the attack-issue from above but one thing that I learned was that in the walk through they leveled a lot. Me, I'm playing on Normal mode and even after having done the Sapphire ring quest and gathered the swordsman gear I am still a lvl 1 and maybe 15% in on the exp bar. Is it because you level slower on Normal? 3) Is there any way to turn off the sound that the dialogs make? Those beeps for every letter spelt out is getting old 4) Even after turning in the Sapphire ring it still shows in my Inventory. Is this expected or a bug? Apart from that it looks great!

Bumping is what Ys I, II and IV are all about, there is no attack button. You just get to bulldoze your way through enemies by hitting them offcenter. I thought it was pretty silly at first, but it's fun once you get used to it. Levelling doesn't take too terribly long at first. Ys I has a level cap of 10, mind, and you'll probably hit it before you get to the final dungeon. As for the text sound, I don't think you can single it out. Disabling ALL sound effects includes that sound, though. And all items will still take up an inventory slot once you've used them. It's more of a reference to show that you got that item at one point, for completion's sake. Note that the icon for the Sapphire Ring is slightly faded now.

Hey, I'll try that 'off-center' hitting out. Sounds fun but maybe a tad tricky using nothing but a keyboard/mouse One thing I thought was really fun in Ys I is the 'Bestiary Potion' or whatever it was called and you 'gather monster stats' using it One thing I wish was in more games is something I've ever only seen in Atlantica Online - and it's that once you have gathered all stats of a monster you get a 10-15% increased dmg against them (as you have 'figured them out'). Anyway, funn game...I just found the Shrine and will explore that now

Thanks, should it turn out to become a necessity I'll look into what I can find in terms of game-pads.
So far I'm whopping lvl 3 and am doing fine ;-)

Keyboards are fine! Wyrdywyrd is just silly. ANALOG IS GREAT DON'T GET ME WRONG (haha), but I've played through every PC Ys title I've got with a keyboard and loved 'em plenty with zero complications due to controls.

Actually, for all Ys I & II titles, I actually recommend using a D-Pad or something like that. xD That is if you want to battle most securely. Same for Ys IV or any other Ys game that makes use of the bump system.
By the way, even if you don't hit the enemy off-center, you will still deal damage. Though, as you said, you also get hit. Hitting behind also works, in the case of Ys I-II COMPLETE.

For most of the earlier Ys I & II titles, you can hit an enemy horizontally while they're going vertically, and vice versa -- AND get PLENTY of hits on them without suffering any consequences! In some versions, you can run against a wall and as an enemy pursues you, colliding with you as you're running up against this wall, you can pretty much kill anything like that! Ys I SMS and Ys II Famicom comes to mind, especially the latter. In Ys II Famicom, there are areas where YOU can walk, but the enemies themselves can't -- such as near the raised lower borders of the Solomon Shrine; the lower half of Adol's body will hide behind this area. You can use that to your advantage as you'll ALWAYS attack enemies off-center; and going back and forth, you can continuously spawn enemies and kill them without penalty! I remember putting my emulator on turbo JUST so I could do that! ^ _^

The question is, did you ever TRY playing them with an analog stick? If not, then you can't really say if playing with a keyboard is any better or worse... and trust me, it's a lot worse. -Tom No, but I never claimed it was better or worse! Just that it's fine!

Yes, no Windowed Mode originally. However, I'm pretty sure there is some way to still play it on Windowed Mode. I'm sure members here have already come across this issue in the past many times.
As for myself, back when I played Ys I-II COMPLETE, I still owned a non-widescreen monitor, so playing Full Screen was fine by me.
