My friend is a hardcore gamer, and he wants to get into the Ys series. Right now he's playing the PSP Ark of Napishtim I loaned him, but I'm curious what you guys think would be the best game for him to start with. I have the DS Legacy of Ys, but honestly, I think it's kinda crappy, especially for someone new to the series. I can't give him Complete or Oath in Felghana because he has a Mac, and the PSP Chronicles aren't in english yet. I gave him some Wii points for his birthday, so should I tell him to get the TG-16 version? He's played the first couple bosses of Oath in Felghana at my house and REALLY liked those. So...ideas?

Shame about the Mac thing 'cause if he's already played Napishtim the next logical games would be either Felghana or Origin, especially if he's enjoying the boss battles. No clue how those games run on a Windows VM/emulator on Mac...
Stay away from Legacy of Ys, seriously.

Yeah I know, right? I mean, I managed to play it just because I'm enough of a fan to handle the crap level, but I'd never recommend it to anyone else. Is the TG-16 too ultra dated to really give a try? Also, does Origin have an english patch? If so, I'm gonna have to hunt that one down...

I only bought and played Legacy of Ys to support Ys in the US. How dated the TCD versions are depends on your hardcore gaming friend. Do they enjoy classic games like Nintendo, SNES, Genesis? If so, then yeah you can throw him the TCD version so he has something to play. Otherwise I'd wait until they're an established fan of the series and wants to check out the roots of Ys or play every Ys game. I have a friend who recently saw that I had Ys I&II TCD on my Wii and said he's heard about the series and should play it sometime, but instead of starting him out on that version, I hooked him up with Ys I & II Complete (when he gets to playing them is another story all together, but I keep reminding him that Ys I only takes 2-4 hours). Sadly Ys Origin does not have an English patch yet. The game is pretty linear minus a few parts where you have to travel back to the base of the tower or talk to a specific NPC, but I've been playing Japanese games for so long that I forget how foreign it can be to someone else. The gameplay in Origin almost makes it worth it.

Yeah, exact same here with Legacy, I bought it to support Falcom and played it because...well...I bought it, lol. I just got Complete today, and I think I might just take my laptop over to his place, set it down, and say "PLAY THIS." It's a hassle, but eh...whatever. Like I said, he is playing Ark of Napishtim, so that should keep him entertained...for now. He finishes games VERY quickly...and I take forever...if ever. He HATES that. "FINISH THE GAMES YOU START" he yells. But hey, he's not my boss, so Nyaa!

though I'd argue with the "2-4 hours" estimate Schlagwerk gave - my first AND second times through Ys I Complete took me 8 hours, so the idea of finishing the game in 2 is kinda ludicrous to me. Taking 8 hours to complete Ys I seems a bit ludicrous to me. There's not even that much to the game! You found the hidden reverse Darm dungeon that extends gameplay by 4 hours and unlocks the hidden AdolxDogi ending, didn't you?! Spoilers: Adol gets his walls crushed.

This is a good topic for me as well; I'm also trying to get a buddy to play some Ys but he's not a fan of the bumping system which leaves out Books I & II. I'm going back and forth between Ys 6 PC and OiF.... any suggestions?

Yeah, that was my thought, but I get the feeling he won't get hooked the way I did, so maybe I should advertise everything good about the series.

I'm gonna bring my laptop over and MAKE him play Complete. He doesn't mind, he'll play whatever I set in front of him as long as it isn't mindlessly boring or Nintendo hard (difficulty based on bad programming, not complex strategy). Is the PS2 version really THAT much better? What in particular makes it better? I don't have it, but I could probably get it if it's really worth the effort.
AdolxDogi ending? You're doing it wrong, you're supposed do the reverse mirror maze to get the bonus dungeon and unlock the AdolxDark Fact ending ^______^

You are describing Battletoads Hard. Even TVTropes itself doesn't list shoddy programming or bad play controls in its bulleted list of things that make games Nintendo Hard Yes, the PS2 version is just that good (PC version is even better but whatever.. PS2 version is still highly playable) If I didn't use AdolxDogi I wouldn't have been able to follow up with Dogi's unfortunate quote. On the other hand I may have been able to repurpose the term Dark Fuct... hrm

Oh, did I use the wrong trope? I get Nintendo Hard and Battletoads Hard confused alot. Needless to say, he's not ultra interested in either, lol. And yes, the wall crusher is classic...but Dark "Fuct" is alot hotter ^^

Uh, yeah, the PSP version is the only version I wasn't too thrilled with. It was hastily done in that it took the PC version, turned down all of the configurations so it would run on a portable and... that was it. It runs a bit chunky, the resolution isn't good at all, mine froze momentarily every time I leveled up.... load times were too long, the menu was shrunk down to fit on a small screen so you can't really read the options that well.... just a myriad of tiny problems that annoyed me. On PS2, there are no load times and it looks generally prettier overall. No other real differences, but when you're playing it, it just feels higher quality. Oh, and the sealed cave or whatever that is in the PSP version (the sidequests with Olha/Isha/Terra) are replaced with a group of corridor sidequests accessed via the alma wing

Hmm, well actually, most of that kind of stuff doesn't bother me OR my friend. It's to be expected when you have ports, I suppose. Like right now he's playing Grandia II on the PS2, and it has alot of those same issues, but he doesn't really mind. Now if there was extra content or extra voice work, things like that, then it'd be different.

Alright fine, I'm going to TV Tropes and find the right one for what I'm looking for, lol.
*Ten minutes later* Ok, after looking through TV Tropes, I don't think there is a trope for bad programming hard. Oh well, point for schlagwerk. Gee, don't I look silly now. Either way, point still stands...my friend doesn't like Nintendo Hard. He gets mad when I make him play the old Castlevania games, lol.

I live off of Nintendo Hard. I dislike Battletoads Hard and inflated difficulty, so that's why I care enough to make the distinction. ^_^

Well I do too, really. I own 3 actual Wii games, 4 WiiWare games, and 24 Virtual Console games. You can tell where my priorities lie, lol. I love those old games, even though I can't even beat most of them, like the old Castlevania games...I try and try, but I never beat them. Except Castlevania II...that was dirt easy.
