Hello again, everyone! I'm back, I totally forgot to...you know...come to the forums...school and internet trouble and stuff.
Anyway, I just recently finished Ys II (DS) and will be finished with Ys II (Complete) today, all I have to do is Dulles and Dharm. After that, it's onward to Oath in Felghana for me!
So, the question I have is, after I beat Ys III, what is everyone's suggestion for the best version of Ys IV to play? I have translations of both Dawn of Ys and Mask of the Sun, but I'm not sure which is generally better. That said, is there ANY reason for me to try and find the PS2 version without having any sort of translation in front of me?
On a side note, me and my friend are gonna be in Japanese classes next semester, whoooo!

The PS2 version is indeed without any sort of translation -- even the FAQ is vague about what is going on. Expect to see "Adol sweatdrops and everyone's OMG... so then you talk to this guy and everyone HEARTS!" often in the FAQ. Also, the backtracking is ATROCIOUS, but once you get magic, the game speeds up dramatically! One spell increases your walking speed, for instance, while another one allows you to teleport. The PS2 version is very nice, but it's not for everyone. You walk pretty slowly; at about 6-7/8ths of the Napishtim speed. When you swing your sword, you slow down considerably -- and you stop when you finish the combo. If you're standing still and you attack, you'll attack in place. Once you have ice magic, you'll be more free-flowing like Napishtim Adol, but slightly faster. The music is pretty good too; though I can't honestly say whether I prefer the PS2 music or the PCE music. Levelling is pretty off-balance, however. You could level up one time and it'll be the difference between taking 50 damage and taking 1; and then the next set of enemies will do like 50 damage more. I found myself easily taking down the bosses without breaking a sweat. I haven't picked it back up since losing an ass-ton of progress, (Getting two new magics, one new sword, dying, and loading to find out that I last saved at a nearby town before all of that.) but I look forward to it. General consensus is, though, every other version is somehow a LOT better. I disagree; I find it on par with the other versions. If you have the option, try before you buy! I wouldn't recommend piracy or emulators, but do as you please.

Ys II Complete is done! Now it's on to Oath in Felghana!
I looked at some videos for the PS2 version of IV, and honestly I think I'll just ignore that. Which leaves me back at the main question...Mask of the Sun or Dawn of Ys...

I prefer Mask of the Sun's canon story, but I love the graphics and gameplay of Dawn of Ys.

It is hard to recommend one over the other as they are both very distinct experiences. With the exception of some characters and the overall setting, everything else is different between the two games, including the story. I say play both.

I think I'm gonna get the OSTs for the PS2 versions of Ys IV/V and ignore the games altogether, unless they get the Felghana treatment by Falcom. In regards to the question posed in this topic, I'd say Mask of the Sun if you care about the Ys story, seeing as MotS is the canon one.

Mmm, I say Dawn, for me atleast, it's just a much better game, & quite frankly, MotS is one of my least favorite Ys ever. Not that it's terrible, but, it just didn't do it for me. I'm sure I'm personally biased since I love the Turbo Grafx, but, I know others that aren't big on the Turbo, & still love DoY more.

I popped my cart in a couple times but am having trouble getting into MoTS. I've had serious issues getting the translation patch to run properly in an emulator, too. DoY, however, has proven to be pretty excellent and I'm enjoying it thoroughly, though slowly.

1. Dawn of Ys 2. Mask of the Sun 3. Mask of the Sun A New Theory
That's the order I played them in, and it's the order I recommend, if you want to play all of them. The Dawn of Ys is probably my favorite Ys game ever. Though I really like Mask of the Sun, I always thought it paled in comparison to Dawn. As far as my Ys IV PS2 experience, it was fun in the end, when the dungeons started getting better, but I can't recommend that one at all. I played it mainly to see what was added and to hear the music.

I liked them all really. It would be a shame to ignore one of the three releases.

It doesn't look like there are OST releases for either of the PS2 IV/V games, and so far I only managed to find a Mask of the Sun rip, while Kefin eludes me. Anyone here who knows where I could find a rip of it? I assume it's not illegal since an official OST doesn't exist.

Much obliged. Edit: The PS2 version of Wanderes From Ys doesn't have good old Chester's theme in it? What an evil game!

I think both games are really good, though I enjoyed the gameplay of Mask of the Sun a bit more as it was faster than the one in Dawn of Ys.
For graphics, story and music I think Dawn of Ys is much better, though I disliked having to read the script everytime the characters spoke.
Still as everyone said you should try playing both games they are different experiences and if you are a Ys fan you will most likely enjoy both.
As for the PS2 version, never tried it but for what I've heard you won't miss much by not playing it.

Goood question...I dunno about the PS2 style, it's so wierd compared to the other stuff. I can't really think of a good Ys IV port. I heard the PC engine one has a translation, not sure how to apply it though.
I recommend just going through the SNES version if possible, just to see the story. To be honest I would love to find a decent version of this amazing story.
