Having trouble with Ys Book I and II on Magic Engine. The fortune teller never tells me about the books or gives me the crystal. There is no change in what she says even though I have armor, a sword and a shield.
There is also no change in what the mayor or the thieves say. The mayor will ask me to get the silver bell every time I talk to him even if I already talked to the thieves.

You may have to actually equip the stuff before Sarah will give you her crystal. Some versions seem to require this extra step, some don't. As for the Silver Bell quest, don't worry about it now; you should be able to complete it pretty soon.

I thought the "Silver Bell" quest was merely an extension of the quest to get the first volume?

It's a side-quest, at least in the case of the Eternal and Complete versions (unsure about the others).

I did a quick run-though of the first part of the game. Your sword, shield and armour MUST be equipped for Sara to give you the crystal.
