Man, you can tell I haven't been here in awhile...I didn't know good 'ol Wyrdwad was working for XSeed!! lol Anyways, I'm really enjoying Ys 7 so far in every aspect from the LE packaging to the game itself. Hats off to XSeed and Wyrdwad for the great work...
I look forward to OiF and Chronicles although I can wait for them since I still love my PC versions. I WILL buy both, however, to support XSeed and to have them on the go. I actually do want to own OiF to see the nice new prologue and to hear the voice acting and Wyrd's touch-ups to the translation....

Gamespot review is up. Frankly, I think that's a terrible review. I only just skimmed it, but I noticed she called the bosses cheap, saying it's impossible to avoid getting hit when you go in for an attack. Someone needs to get out of the "zerg rush to win" mindset that most Action RPGs seem to encourage these days. Or more like someone needs to learn how to pull out faster. I mean, it's not like the boss SUDDENLY attacks without warning. Well, at least on Normal it's sort of easy to see/react to an attack before it happens.

Ugh, it's sort of a pet peeve of mine when people can't distinguish their own lack of skill from a legitimate flaw in the game. I'm terrible at Ys games. Like...I die hundreds of times to even the really easy bosses. ^_^ But I'm not about to accuse the game of being cheap because it's so obviously not. Attacks are telegraphed and you can dodge most everything, especially with flash guarding thrown into the mix. I'm just really bad at the game. If I can tell the difference between something that's challenging but fair and something that's genuinely broken, I'd expect a professional reviewer to be able to.

(I think I only game overed once or twice in Ys SEVEN so far -- once because I forgot I could access heal potions during a boss battle.) But still! When everyone plays on Nightmare or Inferno, I play on Normal and still get hit lots (which says something about ma lack o' skill)! :D

Seven is the only game I'm actually really good at and can beat on the higher difficulties. I have trouble with Normal in Oath and Hard in Origin. :/

Yeah, Ys Seven is the only one I've managed to beat on Nightmare so far, but I'm gonna try Nightmare on Felghana PSP as well.

I am writing a review for a Dutch Anime/Manga/Games/J-culture magazine and I'll ginve the game a solid 8. The game can be better (voice acting, better textures, less grinding), so Felghana PSP will probebly get a 9.

Honestly, I only had to grind for Soul Stones in the last dungeon, other than that I just killed the enemies along the road and I did fine against all the bosses - on Nightmare. On the lesser difficulties I'd have to avoid enemies and refrain from upgrading my equipment all the time to not crush everything in my path like a mighty war god.
I don't necessarily disagree with your score or your other points, however.

Super expert people. .___.' I've gotten totally used to the fact that I shall die atleast once every boss battle, now that I'm finally playing on normal. :'D
Ofcourse, that's only because it's me who's horrid and quite often just end up..... switching characters instead of roll-dodging, not any fault of the game.
I'm not even going to dream of playing on nightmare, let alone hard! D:

I'm more of a type of player who rushes into battles with hardly any blocking. I only dodge with those charge attacks from enemies. I must say I never give any game a 10, there is no perfect game

I can really, really, really like a game by giving it a 9,5 but there is always something wrong with a game or something that could be better. bugs, textures, collision detection, you know the usual things. If it was up to me I wouldn't bother by giving it grades, a grade can only tell you so much.

I do expect a 10/10 game to be absolutely perfect. even if I take your interpertation of a 10/10 game, than from the games I reviewd for the magazine, none would get a 10/10, most were and still are good (6/10)and some were very good (7/10), a few very very very good (8/10), and only one (Ys SEVEN) is an 9/10. I haven't played Felghana PSP yet, but since it's my favourite in the series and now has voice acting it'll probebly get a 10 I think we should agree to disagree on this I do must say we don't review popular games, only Japanese games and then usually one that fly under the radar with most people, but our readers will like it 'cause it's a game adaption of anime or manga or has a specific Japanese feel to it.

Most people perceive 7/10 as good, whereas 6/10 is alright. I've never heard of 7/10 being "very good."
Going by your interpretation of scores, 10 is a pointless score because no game can ever attain it. 10/10 should mean a game that's virtually perfect, not literally perfect.

Most people don't use the full 10 scale though. They pretend to, but a lot of reviewers seem to see 7 as average rather than 5. 5 is terrible.
As for 10s, I agree with wyrdy. No point having it around if you won't use it.

I kinda dread to see what the reviews for OiF are gonna look like. I have a feeling reviewers will tear into that one, especially while comparing it to Ys SEVEN, especially especially if a single VA is not 100% spot on in their acting

I must say I never give any game a 10, there is no perfect game I can kind of understand this approach - when it comes to movies, I won't give a number rating either. Rather I say its a "must see in theaters" or "wait until the DVD comes out", or (and this happens more often than I'm comfortable with) "ehh, if its on cable one night and you're really bored, ya know, WHATEVER." Maybe something similar for games? A 7 or 8 would be "buy when you can", 5-6 "rent or borrow", 3-4 "if you see it used for cheap", or 9+ "camp outside a store until they sell you a copy". So far all the reviews I've read of the US version have made me scratch my head and wonder what game they were playing, because it sure isn't the one I'm playing. I give Ys Seven a "camp outside the store manager's house until he gives you an early copy so you'll go away" rating!

I like Kotaku's approach of no grades score. Just list some good points and bad points... which unfortunately leads people to believe that good points vs bad points IS a score system and think a game with good points but no bad must be the second coming of Mario

I remember playing the final dungeon without abusing the debug mode and ended up dying all over. XD Also, scoring systems suck although admittedly, I WILL look at the numbers. However! I always ALWAYS look for the reasoning behind them as I must see justification and explanations! I must know the pros and cons!

Yeah, using 5 as average is really misleading. People associate scales out of 10 with scales out of 100, which they then associate with grades in school. So 70-79 is usually interpreted as a C (utterly average), 80-89 a B, 90-99 an A, and 100 an A+. -Tom It's not misleading, it's the way it should work if you're gonna use numbers I only know of Edge magazine that actually uses the full scale though. I prefer no numbers at all though, but seen as I don't care for 'professional' reviews perhaps that's not so surprising.
