I think both the EU and JP box art is great, but the American one is horrible.

You think you're making a point in your favor, but actually, I really like the way that looks. In fact, I think I like it better than the ACTUAL cover. The Falcom and XSEED logos, especially, look AWESOME in Comic Sans! -Tom Honestly, with comic sans, it looks like a cheap budget title. You may think it looks fine, but "low budget game" (and possibly "low quality game") is the subliminal message that would be conveyed to a lot of people, even if they don't consciously realize it. A lot of low quality work uses Comic Sans which in turn makes people associate it with crap. Sure, not everyone is going to be the same and there might even be some people who have positive experiences associated with Comic Sans. However, goal of a designer is to make an appealing design that carries the least amount of negative baggage (for the most amount of people). No offense Tom, but I think you might be font-blind It's like trying to explain to a color blind person that their favorite pink shirt, green pants, and red n blue socks don't match at all. Matching the font with the source material matters. It's about quality and professionalism, and some things just don't match at all like dress shoes and sweat pants. Anyway, I hope you don't take this as an attack on you. I don't mean it that way. I'm not trying to change your opinion on Comic Sans. I just want you to at least know where we are coming from as far as matching fonts go, that is all.

I think you mean "conveyed to people who study graphic design", which is what, 10% of the people who are going to buy Ys Seven at the very most? With a huge box art dominating the case and the two tiny logos sitting at the bottom, there's simply no way a regular person who isn't specifically trained to notice text would pay it any notice before they already found the box art interesting and picked it up and read about it, at which point their mind is being filled with new info that renders the "message" the text would otherwise have conveyed pointless.
Also, I've said this before, but that point is irrelevant to the actual in-game text, so I still can't see where all the font-whiners are coming from in regards to Ys Seven. Box art is a means of advertising, so if you rely on text you need something appealing and eye-catching (the big "Ys Seven" logo seems pretty eye-catching), but for text boxes in the game, you need something legible and easy on the eyes. What then, is the problem? I will never understand it.

I think you are not realizing the true power of fonts. Logos and in-game text, however, are two separate entities. Granted, by the time they notice the in-game text, the person has already (hopefully) bought the game, so it may not matter much, but as it has been mentioned before, it really does spice things up quite a bit.

Well, I'm not certain why anyone would want to use a generic font if they can be creative and use something that adds a little more flavor to the game. So I guess you could say, that you're confusing me!

I'm not saying I would object to them using a better font provided they could make one I actually think is better, I'm saying the current one is hardly cause for complaint. Everything in every game can almost always be better in some way, but that doesn't mean you should also complain about everything.
And I did admit that some games benefit from a special font, like Half-Minute Hero and it's retro font, but I don't really see any font that's especially suited to a generic game like Ys. When I say generic, it's in the sense that it doesn't really have a distinct theme like retro or gothic or whatever, it's just a plain old game.

FTR I don't really mind Ys Seven's font. I do think that there could have been alternate choices, however.
You know what more games need? An in-game font selector! That way everybody wins.

That is truly an ingenious idea, although it could be difficult to do; I mean, they could always program word wrap into their games so that more variable fonts could be used, but that's something I imagine only would be done in the USA. I don't think Japan has any need for word wrap; just character wrapping instead, which IS in most games on the market. (Of course, the only game I could use as an example is Faxanadu, since that does have character wrapping.) It makes it veryhard to type. See? Instead of using a line break between the words very, and hard, I had to delete the space between them instead, to create the quoted message. If word wrap were enabled... That would happen instead. So I would have to use a space to get the dialogue to appear correctly. Clearly that sentence would be reworded for a dialogue box to fit, look nice, and sound appropriate. We also live in a day and age now where we don't have that asinine 16 character limit! For GBA and DS games with higher restrictions, they use variable width fonts instead of fixed width, which most older games use. You know what I want to see? Variable width fonts... on the NES! That, and word wrap!

The in-game's font isn't that bad. Not great, but not bad either. It's generic, but it's pretty readable. It doesn't have the kiddy look of Comic Sans, and it at least has some dignity to it. And from what I understand, it's the font that Falcom supplied, so I can't really complain about it too much. I'm just thankful XSEED didn't decide to replace it with Comic Sans.

I noticed inappropriate fonts well before I took any design classes. I'll admit I did get a sharper eye for it after taking classes though. And I know a few people who don't have design backgrounds that have complained about fonts (even the readable ones). Maybe it's people who have a high attention for detail? Personally I always felt I was pretty lenient on font choices compared to other designers. The Ys Seven in-game font didn't bother me too much.

This all goes back to proving a point I made earlier, though: No matter what font you use, you just can't win. Any font -- and I mean ANY font -- will be loved by some, hated by others, and deemed perfectly acceptable (and thus not even really THOUGHT about) by the majority. The only exceptions are fonts that are hard to read -- but as long as the font is legible, some will always love it, some will always hate it, and most will fall squarely in the middle. Font choice is pretty much the most unrewarding thing ever. -Tom I see what you're saying. However, the thing to remember is not all font choices are going to have the same number of lovers and haters. For example, if you have two readable fonts and one has 40% of people hating it, and another has 2% of people hating it, which one would you rather go with?

Anyway, back to Felghana... I was just thinking about the new narration at the beginning. Does the narrator say "Ys" at all? Many of the people who were first introduced with Napishtim and SEVEN still don't know how it's pronounced and insist on calling it Why-es, Yis, Yeez, or Yes. Just wondering if Felghana will help in alleviate that at all.

I know at least Elena says "Ys," but only if you beat Time Attack mode on Inferno, so I doubt a lot of people will be hearing that. ;) Just edit things so that the VERY FIRST THING the narrator says is "Ys". XD As for Comic Sans all over the Ys SEVEN box, it .... actually doesn't bother me very much. ^^;;;;;; But that might be because the damn cover art itself detracts from it. And other than it being too busy, it's always bothered me that the background had those shades (or hues???) of blue. Maybe someone with a better grasp of colour theory can explain why? ^^ I just think the white + blue-ish background (and layout) from this works much better.

On the bright side, at least you don't have to write everyone entirely in hex. D: Actually, this is the Xbox 360 version, which kinda makes it worse. The good news is, literally almost any USB keyboard works with the game, and it's HIGHLY recommended to use a real keyboard in place of the terrible, terrible software keyboard. One thing it needs, though, is messenger kit chatpad support. ... and yeah, I don't know hex anyway, so that would be excruciating.
