Was putzing around as part of my current uber Ys kick, and finally was able to get a video made using the original animation with the audio from YS1&2OP_22.WAV file.
This was definitely an unused track that was originally considered for the opening movie audio. The music itself is a lot more synth based than what Falcom originally used, and especially for the first half of the video I like the music they eventually used better.
HOWEVER, at the 1:57 mark when the Theme of Adol kicks in I absolutely love this version. The music is synced perfectly, and I was always a bit sore that Falcom included a bunch of unused music tracks in Ys Eternal/Complete but never had a version of one of my favorite tracks.
So here it is:
What do you all think?

I would say that you are right, this piece is a VERY rough audio cut, and while it fits it definitely does not do so nearly as well. The sound quality of the actual into is also hella better. For me it's the Theme of Adol part that just clinches my love. I would have loved to have seen a fully baked better timed version of this whole piece, I think it could have worked well.
To me Theme of Adol is what I think of when I think awesome game intros. Much of that has to do with the TG-16 nostalgia, but it is there. I mean when that intro first played, blaring through my stereo, I was literally dumbfounded. No game music I had ever heard sounded THAT good, and the visuals were amazing. I'm sure a lot of others who entered the Ys world via the Turbo feel much the same.
First Steps is great, but it doesn't have that Falcom opening awesome that Dawn of Ys, Theme of Adol, and the later ones do.

Hmmm, yep I kind of agree with wyrd that the opening they ended up using fits in better. At least for video synch, and for me audio too - my favorite part of the opening is where the part of Dark Fact theme (or is it final battle or whatever). As for the theme of Adol, I think it would kick in pretty well if it was a different sound they used in that part It just doesn't fit the picture for me. Organ, violin, guitar or something like that and - boomba. Felghana's opening the best one? That's something wyrd I find it maybe one of the poorest in series (don't know about Ys Seven though, and don't even want to know about its opening since I don't have it). It is just that the Felghana opening's first 30 seconds just say nothing, an uninteresting movie (30secs) and calm music - isn't my kind of Ys combination Totally lacks of what I, II, Origin, VII openings have to offer for the first 30 secs, for example. From the very begining you can feel it from those "Ohh yes, now we are talking about some big business! Bring it on!" I the harmony of piece builds up like a story with a few climax in the middle - peaceful start to lure you in, builds up builds up, baang change change, 'come and try' ending. II, Origin and VII I guess I don't need to say much about them first beats and its already "Bring it on! We are going in now!" But I want to say a couple of things about Ys II opening, it is just pure awesomeness, the 1:20-1:50 being the shiny diamond of it. And I just absolutely hate the jdk band's To Make End of the Battle since I find that it totally lacks of all the awesomeness that makes you mind blow away, which the opening song has to offer. with the opening of VII I mean Release of the Far West Ocean opening if it isn't already clear from my text

I prefer First Step Toward Wars, I feel like Theme of Adol kills the mood a bit. If the song had better synth, then my opinion would change.
Im with wyrd in the case that I enjoy Felghana's Opening. VII's opening good, but could be I better. Which Ys II opening do you hate, cause ill say this completes synth version of To Make the End of Battle doesnt put you in the mood enough. Chronicles version, thats the spot.
Ill say that in my opinion Alternative Saga's opening is the top of that list, cause it has the soothing start of felghana, action parts of VI, and the Overview feeling of Origin.

Yeh Chronicles version is awesome but I find completes To Make End of the Battle awesome too. But which of these two is better I don't know, as far as the audio goes I just love both of them, and both pieces have near catharsis feeling to me. And no, I don't think I hate any of the Ys II openings, but the jdk band's song which has the same name To Make End of the Battle and which sounds like the opening to some extent. Or never mind I could as well say that I hate all the arranged versions of it which hasn't been used as the actual opening - or at least most of them, the ones that are used on live performances of jdk band for example, those are the ones i hate. Don't know whats the case with the one on "Ys I & II Best Sound Collection" that version I can manage. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe you know which ones I mean. As for Felghana I just don't like the 3d modeling on the first 30 sec part. It totally brings the whole opening down, thats my point of view

Of the recent ones my faves are as follows:
Ys II Complete (God Bless Makoto Shinkai) Ys Origin Ys VI Ys I C Ys OiF Ys Seven
Seven's felt UBER low budget, a feel I got a lot throughout the game BTW. I mean every recent Ys has had at least a couple of FMV cinematics, and Seven had the opening and that was it. And the opening was cool, but nowhere near as nice as previous ones, and did it even HAVE any animation? Falcom's openings have always used a lot of cheats to make things look more animated than they actually are, but nowhere was it more apparent than in Seven's OP.

what other games did falcom release between 1999 and 2001? MMakoto Shinkai may have had a hand in those as well.
edit:
I think he had some hand in this as well, as the other LOH 3, 4 and 5 openings.
