dear brothers and sisters of internet.
I opened YsO for the first time recently in a long time and was dumfounded by the fact that there were saves there dating back from 2006 up to 2010, side by side all on the same laptop.
I was sort of put off by the fact this awesome game is still as much untranslated and mostly unknown as it was when I first installed it.
I was waiting for an international port or a traditional translation/fanlation of the game before I played through it because I didn't want to spoil things if I could avoid it.
So, I basically had an untouched 4+ year game.
I was curious if things had changed recently ( seems not ) and if not what I could do to about it.
And fast forward a few days later and this is what that culminated in.
( left out spoilerific images containing plot dialogue. )
This topic isn't about the actual YsO translation so much as it is about the application that helps makes it possible.
It's basically a helper app. that runs side by side YsO's game-client and helps to re-translate most of YsO's text, dialogues & messages while you're playing through it.
You can see your changes in real time without closing/restarting the game.
Install...
Simply put everything into the YsO folder and start "origin.exe". That's it.
There's nothing else to install, change or patch and nothing to uninstall as well. The game is largely untouched so it won't break compatibility with future updates from Falcom.
Example use:
The first thing you may notice is the floaty window.
When "File->Capture Dialogue" is enabled from the file menu it outputs all dialogue.
If "File->Silent/Verbose" is checked, it will also output more specific stuff like the filename of the script it's currently reading from.
( It is disabled by default to not fill the Log window with a lot of useless/uninteresting junk right off the bat. )
Players can use this to capture actual snippets of text from the game - a request I've seen a few times - reference it in forums, include it in FAQs, or look up specific kanji elsewhere to get a better idea of what's going on in game at the moment.
- Quality translation.
This may be helpful for anyone going through the game on a first run without much prior knowledge in japanese but want to get a better idea of whatever is going on in-game.
The "File->Filter files" simply enables translated files to be used and untranslated files to be saved. If you uncheck it the game reverts to using normal untranslated [default] game files and vise versa, if it is rechecked again. It is enabled by default.
Under "File->Load->xso scripts" is the script editor. It's the bulk of the app's usefulness, here is one example usage of it:
1. In YsO talk to an NPC or trigger an event with the dialogue that you want to edit or translate.
2. If "Verbose/Silent" was enabled, it will show in the log window, which script file was just referenced by the NPC/Event. You can open open it with "File->Load->.xso script." and choosing whatever the actual script file was for that NPC/Event.
3. A script editor will pop-up with the contents of the script.
4. Make the changes and select "File->Save".
5. It will ask if you're certain just to make sure...
6. You're done. That's it. Now go talk to the NPC and you'll see whatever script changes you've made in-game. You can close the script window or leave it open as you talk to the NPC at this point. It doesn't matter. You can continue to make changes if you leave the script open as well.
I like this approach because it's very expedient to make small changes and try different wordings of the same statement to see which one fits the flow of conversation and overall context used within the game.
So it gives you the option to work around with it very quickly, see the results and painlessly get it to the point where your satisfied with your own version of the script.
Script files are automatically saved in the Data folder. If you should accidentally break something or over write something you didn't mean to, it won't harm your game ( but remember to back up your important / really long event scripts ) - just delete the corrupted file and next time you talk to that npc it will automatically generate a new/clean one in the same folder. It's like this by design so you can do as much editing around as you want without actually harming the game's real files.
The loader currently includes support for these versions of Ys Origin:
- 1.0.0.5 Win XP
- 1.1.0.0 Win XP
- 1.1.0.0 Extra
- 1.1.0.3 Vista
Some quick Q&A before any actually happens:
Q- It says something about VC++ redistributable files or something!?
A- You can get it from Microsoft website just search for 'redistributable vc dlls' if this happens for you.
Q- It's not Fact it's Fuct! / It's Syon not Sion! [etc...]
A- I just phonetisized, I didn't even realize they had "official" spellings before I saw the Ys Origin artbook later on. Feel free to edit/modify the scripts however you want, that type of user-level customization is exactly what this thing is to be used for.
[Apologies if I offended any hardcore fans in the process, tho-...]
Q- How much is translated, exactly?
A- About up to the water prison with patches of stuff untranslated earlier, like some bitmaps, Hugo's commenting about a roux or something, anything relating to musha. Specifically, right until after the first set of "boss" doors ( opens with a medallion ). Items and characters up until then are mostly/probably translated.
No love for Yunika's side of things ( and don't even ask about secret characters that I don't even have yet.! ) Although sometimes text is used for both and translated parts may end up used on both sides, like treasure chests, save points, maybe some NPC dialogue.
Q- Is the SP/"shop" menu on save points english?
A- Yes. Maybe it will lessen the number of requests for fully translated "shop lists" being posted on the forum every now and then(!)
Q- Why do this?
A- A few reasons. I hear there is/was more on the side of technical issues holding back translating YsO, then a lack of capable translators, so I wanted to see if that gap could be bridged and this is what became of it. It's a shame there have been things like walkthroughs and other semi- translated parts of the game ( like the shop menu, intro, etc ) but none of these things to make their way into the actual game for this long. Maybe now efforts like that don't need to just go to waste. Also, this means anyone can do the work of the translating and get instant feedback without having to go and learn about debugging...
Q- Is this related in any way with any of the other ongoing YsO related projects?
A- Nope
Please feel free to make changes or share/upload better script translations as you see fit - the included ones are really just there as an example and a starting point more than anything.

There is also a cheats menu. But I guess that is pretty self-explanatory.
