The comments going on in the latest page of the "Which game did you last finish" thread made me curious -- When a game gives you the option, how many people here tend to play as their own gender, and how many tend to play as the opposite gender?
I'm male, but I tend to play female characters when given the option. There's no conscious reason behind it, but I tend to be drawn toward "girly" things more than most guys probably are, and that probably plays into my tendency to play as female characters on a subconscious level. The first game I remember leaning that way in was Legend of Mana (though pretty much everyone I knew played as the female in that game anyway.)
So, how 'bout everyone else? Do you tend to play as your own gender, or the opposite one? And is there any particular reason for choosing the sex you do, or is it just the option that you're sort of drawn to?

I also tend to play as female characters. Not really sure why, but I think it stems from me choosing a female in an MMORPG I played a long time ago because the males looked horrible. Since then, I've almost always picked female over male.

I always play as female characters when I'm given the chance. I don't see anything wrong with that... or is there?

My main is (most) always a male, but alts tend to be female unless I'm going for a specific joke.

I tend to play as female, the reason is more or less the same as Peytrals.

I don't really know... I never really thought about it. Both sexes work just as well, I guess it depends on if I like their character designs better?

I usually pick a woman if I'm able to, mostly because games have enough male heroes as it is. There's nothing wrong with a good male character though and I wouldn't go to great lengths to avoid using them.

Where's the 'I am female, and like to play as both~! ' option?! X'D Truly though, I've never really thought about it like so. Especially in non-MMO'd games. Reading this poll, the only few games with the 'gender choice' option that came to me mind were Threads of Fate/Dewprism, Legend of Mana, and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. I guess... if I had to pick one, I think I might just pick a male character. But that decision too won't really be a concious gender based decision like so. Um... the best I can describe that is... by using the examples of the three games above. When I first played Threads of Fate, when I was given the choice between Rue and Mint, I automatically went for Rue. Mint rubbed me as a wee bit obnoxious and loud in character, and Rue's quest appealed more to the sappy side of me. I think... his story revolved around saving or something like so involving someone pretty close to him, ne? Felt far more interesting to me than following a rude girl on a quest to grab money~ (In the end though, as with such 'different views for different characters ' sort of games, I played Mint's route right after I finished Rue's.) With Radiant Mythology on the other hand, I remember I wanted a guy main character simply because... of Kanonno. Having such a characterless main character was so... meh... that... I kept livening it up for myself by imagining little stories for my main character. X'D And imagining him as a love interest for Kanonno~! X'D *shot by all* (A female wouldn't work for that, with me~! X'D) Legend of Mana, one picked the female! No real reason why! She just seemed more fitting! :'D Oddly, if I was to speak of MMOs though (not that I've played many. X'D Just two~!) my main character, till now, has always female. It's pretty much because... ever since Red Hairdo and MP83 got me hooked onto Ys Online, I created a female character first. And now, even when I looked elsewhere, I just felt like recreating her. I have a feeling if I was to ever try any other anywhere else too, I'd probably recreate her again. X'D ...Wait. Does that mean I pick the 'I am female and I always play a female character!' option?! :'D I think really, it's more of a case of 'whoever seems more fitting for the situation'! *babbles whole paragraphs just to really say one line~!* *shot*

Oh, in fighting games, I pick whichever character I enjoy playing as, based on their style. Sometimes, if a character's design is so bothersome to me, I might not give them as much of a chance (see Rufus from SFIV) but usually any character can grow on me.
So in fighting games it is pretty much based solely on the character's play style.

Yeah fighting games are a different affair since the characters can be drastically different from each other (or in Blazblue's case feel like you're playing entirely different fighting games). I usually go for the character whose style I like the most, and then adjust when I shortly find out that they are overused, low tier, or just aren't fun to play.
MvC3 has been the first game in a while where I've stuck with my starting team (Wesker, Spencer, Dormmamu). Although pre-release I was gonna put Thor in my team... and he turned out to be the worst character in the game

When I'm creating my own character from scratch in a game, I'll generally make her female simply because I'm not very imaginative, and usually just go with a character loosely based off myself. But if it's choosing characters from a predetermined selection of already established characters, I tend not to think very much about gender, and just choose whoever looks appealing. With perhaps a slight bias toward female characters, cute child characters and pretty boys. :'D

I tend to play as males if I have a choice for character creation, although I welcome games that have strong (physically or through personality) female protagonists and usually end up preferring their characters and personalities over some of the main male heroes. Off hand I can say that I really like Jade from Beyond Good and Evil the most, with Chris from Suikoden III and Samus Aran (well, when she's playing a silent badass and not talking about her conflicting emotions... I'm looking at you Other M!) Basically anyone who even comes close to Segourney Weaver's role as Ellen Ripley from Aliens.
But, in fighting games I tend to always pick males over female characters with the exception of Sakura from Street Fighter... but then, she's kinda manly too so...
For RPGs or MMO's I'll usually pick a male main and a female alternate.

Also check out Trish's hands in MvC3, especially during her victory pose. After I've seen her man hands, I can never unsee them. They're huge!

Didn't answer cause it's sort of 50/50. I used to play mostly female (I"m male), but recently I've only reserved that for games with really good-looking models. Otherwise, I've shifted to using male characters in RPG games, since it kind of makes more logical sense. It also prevents 'awkward' if the game has romance side-stories.

It really depends on what options are available. I tend to make guys who look like me. I don't think I'm super good looking or anything like that, but it does help with the immersion. Usually if that isn't available, then I'll play as a female character.

Character creation: Female. Almost purely. Pool of preset characters: Female bias, will forgo girls for badass dudes. (Auron, for example, got to prance about Spira with Rikku and Yuna) No choice in the matter: I don't complain. Dudes are fine.
Why? More appealing. I like cute. Cute things that do badass things are generally a win-win. I will forever miss the cute little pink ponytailed death machine that was my gnome deathknight back when I played WoW all those years ago.

Yeah. The males never look very appealing to me. Unless the actual character is tied to the class, I usually pick female. Or just because I'm a perv but still...
