www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/I'm sure most people have at least heard of the games but for those who haven't Streets of Rage is an old beat em up series from the Sega Genesis era that more or less rivaled Final Fight (and IMO plays better). This remake is sort of a compilation of all three Genesis games with extra fan-made levels, engine tweaks, remixed music and some remodeling with sprites, etc. I was a big fan of beat em ups when I was younger and am thrilled to see this project finally done! Also the soundtrack for the original games was done by none other than Yuzo Koshiro of Ys 1 and 2 fame if anyone cares

At first I had my reservations but damn this think is solid so far. I dunno if it was just Adam but the enemies had an annoying tendency to run away from my super when I'd use it. Plus I couldn't find the timing on his infinite if he has one at all.

Axel got viciously beat about the head and neck by the nerf bat. His bare knuckle special now does piddly damage and lost all invulnerability. On the other hand, he still has his jab infinite. I'm in talks with a friend to see when we can get around to duoing this game. We 1cced SoR2 on Maniac w/ 2 Axels... and lots of Axel dance parties

I usually don't care about beat 'em ups. . . but having just played God Hand the other week, I've been living with the insurmountable desire to punch something ever since.

I did kinda think that Axel was based off of his SoR3 version and this accounted for why he seemed nerfed. Yeah, when I unlock him, SoR2 Axel all the way! Though it really does seem like the enemies dart away far more frequently than in the original games. Why if it wasn't for SoR3's dash I dunno how I'd catch up to most of them. SoR1 Souther (second boss with the claws in SoR1) is an incredible pain in the ass because you can't get in on him.

Had a quick play yesterday and I love it! Sega should get this on XBLA

I played a game on normal. Made it to like stage five before getting the crap beat out of me, and didn't have the patience to start right over on easy.
I never played the originals, so I was a bit surprised (read: disappointed) with the number of moves available. It does get a bit tedious (to me, anyway) spamming the same punches, kicks, and headbutts after so long. Still a fun game, just not up to my expectations.

I vividly remembered a map from a beat-em-up that I played on a Genesis when I was very young... I randomly decided to try the demo for SoR2 on XBLA a couple months ago and realized that that was the game I remembered so well. How did I know? The floor tile for the first stage.

The SoR 3 characters have a hell of a lot of depth - weapon specials, rolls, dash attacks, back attacks, Street Fighter-esque specials, star specials, cooperative moves... there's a hell of a lot there.

Perhaps I missed something. What are the Street Fighteresque specials? I checked a faq to determine if there were any moves I simply wasn't aware of (because I assumed there were), and didn't find anything that just clicking buttons didn't get me.
Mostly I just used dash attacks and dash kicks, spiced up with close quarter combos.
And Baron von Schlagworth was right about Axel's special. I can only land it correctly when using it on somebody who's in the process of getting up. Otherwise they just run away from it.

-tap towards, towards, attack for everyone's special attack. As of SoR3 if you survive long enough without dying you get a star that powers up your special in some way (usually range first, then extending it, but Adam's completely changes at 3 stars). Every time you die you lose a star. -different characters have extra attacks with weapons if you do a special while holding the right weapons. Like Axel + bat, Adam + wood plank, Blaze + knife. -you can alter people's super attacks by holding a direction, neutral, or in Adam's case press the super attack button while running. -there's a configurable special button that seemingly does nothing when you press it. But if you enter in d-pad combos while holding it, you can do everyone's star versions of their specials without the stars! I don't remember all the inputs, but half-circle towards is 3 stars and I think towards, half-circle towards is 4 stars.
I won't even get into all the variations of attacks you can do while holding someone. Only Kirby and wrestling games have ever had more options <_< So the move set isn't as huge as Capcom beat 'em ups like Aliens vs Predator or D&D but it's enough to have fun experimenting with how to kick ass

Now that I was not aware of! Thank you, Schlag!
--I was wondering why the hell that button did nothing. I was also wondering what the deciding factor on the star accumulation was; thanks for filling me in.
I'll have to make time for another go now that I better know what the hell I'm doing.

I forget the exact criteria for getting more stars, but the basics are don't die = get a star. Otherwise I think it is based off of points (at a different rate than 1-ups) or just number of enemy kills

40000 points without a death gets you a new star (same as the actual SoR3). The "special" button that lets you use the star moves without the stars has different commands per character, if you unlock the character profiles extra in the shop ($20000 IIRC) it'll tell you how to do them. Also I suggest playing on Easy if you just want more money for the bonus shop because the extra cash you get from beating Mania is only like $12500 more
