Adol's movement is painfully slow, most of the "new" game elements are obnoxious, the dungeons seemed designed to annoy people familiar with the original, the enemies and bosses are incredibly frustrating (except for the two Dark Facts, who are ridiculously easy), the graphics are kludgy and poorly colored, and it's poorly programmed as heck (enemies and even bosses going through walls, enemies still visible with Mask of Eyes on in 3rd floor of Shrine).
The final kicker for me was how they changed it so you go to Jeba to read the last book at the end... AND DIDN'T CHANGE THE ENDING TEXT. AT ALL. So you're in Jeba's house, and the ending text talks about you "looking down at Jeba's house."
...That's the point where I said, "they just didn't give a crap, did they?" I'm glad I never have to play this again.

I, sometimes, wonder if the Jeba bit was a translation/patching mistake. XD *plans to check on that later* But yeah... I agree with most of what you said. xD I just didn't have any problem with the bosses, personally, but that was it... But despite agreeing with most of what you said, I have to say I still like that game. xD The different world map and dungeon designs made the game "new" (instead of yet another port using the same designs), and I guess the same goes for the (obnoxious) new content. XD Don't forget it had one or two new music tracks too. (Not saying they were the greatest thing ever, but... xD) Anyway, yeah, there are better versions of Ys I out there. xD

I liked having a new track for the mountain around the Shrine and the fact that it actually used Palace instead of doing what every other version does and leaving it as only the first (empty) floor song got some points in my book. Everything else though, yeah. I played it once for the novelty but I won't be repeating the experience unless my PCE disc, Wii and now PSP all fall into a black hole.

Düüd... You missed the actual game breaker. It is unplayable. For one reason alone: It starts scrolling only when you're right at the edge of the screen. That way, you cannot see what's ahead, other than a few tiles. Normally, a game starts scrolling right away, so that your game sprite stays in the middle section of the screen. If someone were to fix this crime in game design, the game would be A-W-E-S-O-M-E. I have never completed the game, but it makes sense that it says you look down on Jeva's house, since you get beamed up when the thing that does the thing (of the thing) occurs.

Er, most of the earlier Ys games are like this. I even just looked at DoY and it was more-or-less the same way. The difference is that in DoY accidentally hitting an enemy head-on can potentially cause moderate harm. In Ys Famicom, it's an almost-guaranteed death sentence. But Adol doesn't get beamed up until after it says that, and even if he did, I think Adol would be more concerned about the fact that he's flying through the air .

I'm going to step out and say that I actually really enjoyed the Ys Famicom games. This might be because of two factors. One, being that Ys I and Ys II for the famicom were my first experiences playing through Ys I & II. It was around the time of when Ys VI was just coming out for the PC and I had just happened to catch a trailer of it. I learned about the premise of the Ys games from a friend that I used to hang out with often (who as it turns out, used to visit AloY long before my time here by the name of Strag0) and immediately went out to seek the first English versions of the games I could find. What I found were patched versions of the original Famicom roms. I simply loaded them up on my modded-Xbox NES emulator and went to town. I didn't have any issues with the game because I had nothing else to relate it to and it was only after I played many other versions of Ys I & II that I even realized certain things such as Dark Fact's extra form not being canon to the rest. But to me that only adds to the interest of the famicom versions. They seem to be rather different than the others and that's kinda special in my book.
Two, the graphics are very similar to, and from what I could tell, the sound effects are also used in, Crystalis which is my all-time favorite NES game, so it was a nostaligic experience for me even though it was an entirely new experience.
I should go back and play it again now that I've played through most of the other versions to give it a second critique.

I love the game's differences. Strange Ys is good Ys, in my opinion. Just look at Ys 2 Special or the X68000 game (two of my favorites of all time). However, the aforementioned scrolling issue kills the game for me. Yes, other Ys 1 games sort of have that problem too, but not to the same extent - they are still playable.

No, Ys 2 Famicom is totally normal. I don't like it at all, partly for this reason.

Ya know, Ys famicon was my first foray into this franchise, and needless to say, it had me hooked. (Except the totally unfair Jenocres fight if you had no idea how to play it. ) The new tracks for the Mountain Pass and the Alternate Dark Fact fight remain some of my favorites, despite being non-canon. Are they the best? No, but they did their job in getting me hooked into the rest of the series, and I consider this a win for me.

Originally I couldn't believe my luck when I saw there was an Ys II and the only Eng. translation used to be on NES, but that translation quit just as I entered the Shrines and turned into scribble. I was totally fascinated when I finally got to see Complete, because I never got round to the PCE Ys II!

The Ys Famicom version is brutal, you move at a snail's pace, everything about the game is different, you fight Dark Fact twice.
It definitely is an interesting version to play, Nintendo-Style.

I played it on emulator some time ago. It was so damn weird. I got so badly stuck few times that if I hadn't had wing item with me it would have been game breaking. I think one of those moments was after the first Dark Fact fight. I just couldn't leave the room anymore. Is it really so crazy designed? Or was it just my bad emulator/rom? Fighting Dark Fact twice was nice

Techniiiiically you don't fight Dark Fact twice, but just once. The other battle you fight against... Fact. Not Dark Fact. Just, simply Fact. XD IIRC.

Playing it right now. Hands down the worst Ys game I have ever played.

The second one gets much better, though. But yeah, that one is harder to enjoy. Although I still had fun, in particular because of its oddities, and extra music, as painful as many other things were. Like FM-77 said way back up there: Strange Ys is Good Ys.
