Velagunder's a bit of a pain at first. Make sure to kill the little beasties he spits out ASAP because not only do they make the ground slippery but when he sucks them back in they'll restore some of his HP. Other than that, his attacks aren't too hard to deal with. Hugo's Wind magic lets him tank the chomp attack and float over the bubbles and the laser isn't dangerous if you keep moving since it always hits where you were a second ago. Getting up on top of him when he's vulnerable now... I think the fight took longer than it needed to because I kept falling off him. Hugo has an easier time than Yunica since he can stay aloft longer.
The good thing is once you get past him, the next few boss fights aren't generally too bad.

I've gotten through every Ys game on normal with this trusty strategy:
Level Grind. I'm usually horrible at action games but that extra couple of levels can make all the difference in Ys.

Thanks guys! I did some grinding and managed to get past him in the end I think I like this game better than Felghana honestly. PS: the music in the water area is very nice! Perfect for drowning in XD;

I did a scan of all the install files before installing and all my hard drive files after installing and didn't find anything dangerous. If you do a full install, I believe you get a hidden update program that runs during startup (SSS.exe by Sourcenext, the file provider). You can disable this using MSCONFIG or something. Just FYI, SSS.exe is a known trojan.

Do you have any more information on SSS.exe? It is possible to prevent its effects by disabling it via startup?
After all, there are a fair number of people who have installed this free version of Ys Origin and while I have mentioned the existence of SSS.exe, I haven't made a big fuss about it since it seemed relatively harmless. If it is dangerous or a nuisance, we should raise awareness of it.

Hmmmmmm... I don't know. Isn't that like saying "Setup.exe" is a known trojan? As in, there ARE many "Setup.exe" trojan horses, however many "Setup.exe" files also aren't. But I can be wrong about "SSS.exe". Eitherway, you don't have to run "SSS.exe" to install that version of Ys Origin. So all's good, I guess.

Hmm, doing some searching, it's a somewhat common enough file name that there's legit versions and trojan versions. Not many programs with it that I can find, but not all were viruses.
Besides the virus versions, seems a program called Steganos Security Suite uses that file name. I can find other results about Sourcenext with the file name, but most of those are Japanese, so I couldn't really tell you much about it anyway.
From what I gather though, you don't even have to run the Sourcenext installer on this anyway and can just ignore it and install from the Falcom installer. *shrug*

Okay, I gave in and downloaded the Groupon version of Ys Origin, and ran the download (as a non-administrator user). It creates an Ys Origin folder, and in there is the SourceNext installer, a few PDFs, and three folders -- one titled "GPYS", one titled "SPEC" (which just contains a readme file), and one titled "SSS". The "SSS" folder doesn't contain the SSS.exe itself, but it has a "setup.exe" and a folder containing "Setup.msi". I ran both files through VirusTotal and they both came up clean, for what it's worth. Anyone who installed this and is worried can run the SSS.exe that got installed through VirusTotal as well. The "GPYS" folder contains an autorun.inf and Falcom's setup, along with the rest of the game. I'm guessing that this is probably just a copy of the Ys Origin (Vista version) install disc, except with the disc check patched out of the game EXE. I used the beta version of MD5summer to make SHA1 checksums of this folder, if anyone with an Ys Origin install disc wants to compare them. (This'll be enough to tell if the files have changed at all.) Anyway... as Zaratus mentioned, the Falcom installer is right there, so there's not much of a point in running the SourceNext one -- heck, the game EXE is sitting right there, too, and the game seems to run fine from there (disclaimer: I only tried playing for a minute or two), so there's no need to run any installer if you don't want to. ...Not sure if all that will be of any use to anyone, but I thought I'd post it here, especially since I was kind of uncomfortable about running it at first.

I find all this information useful. xD
Anyway, I guess it was just a false alarm then. XD

Reached the final boss in Hugo's route at level 50, now seeing if I can do some grinding to buy the remaining SP upgrades.
I think I like Ys Origin so much better than Felghana because the characters have a personal stake in what's happening, unlike Adol, who seems mostly along for the ride. There isn't much dialogue but what there is is effective, like when Hugo is in a snit and refuses to use the shell to call for help, for example.
It would be nice if Falcom made another prequel game set in Ys proper so I could play as a Fact with lasers again. Or at least came up with an ending that wasn't "And then the magic went away and life became that much more boring."

I've got some problems with SP after downloading this version of the game. I'm at the Territory of Poisonous Blood with Yunica and when I'm picking up crystals, it gives me only 1 SP. Yeah 1 SP for every crystals, even for the big crystals. Do you have the same problem ?
PS : I tried to update the game but afterward it asks me to insert a CD (so if you have downloaded the Groupon version of the game, don't try to update).

Yeah 1 SP for every crystals, even for the big crystals. Do you have the same problem ? PS : I tried to update the game but afterward it asks me to insert a CD (so if you have downloaded the Groupon version of the game, don't try to update). The Groupon version is the latest version from what I've seen, at least the version number matches with my disc copy with extra disc installed. It worked fine from the extracted folder for me, but that was because I already had it installed. Nice note: If you copy the Groupon's version .exe into your Ys Origin folder (backup the old exe just in case), you won't need your disc anymore to play. Rather nice, I hate having to keep discs in the drive to play stuff. Now, for a friend who was installing the game, when ran from that folder, he had no in-game sound/music. After installing via the Falcom installer, he had sound and music. So, it is probably best to run it from that, considering who knows what other kind of problems you could run into as well, besides that. So, considering the offer is still online and you can still download it from them by giving them your email address, is it the Groupon installer that is supposed to block your install after April 28th and they're counting on people to not notice the Falcom installer or something? *shrug*

I didn't install it and I heard the music just fine, but it's probably just because I already had the OGG DirectShow filters installed. Duly noted, though.

Ahh, true, that could be the reason as well. I forget those aren't standard. =p

They probably changed the URL address that pointed to the file. If you do all the steps in the site found in the first post, you'll probably be given the link, a renewed one.

I don't know if that's the reason, but I just tested by re-registering using another e-mail account and the link they give you is still the same, which doesn't work anymore.
