Hello everyone, I've been reading this forum for a few days now and some of the information I've learned is pretty intriguing. I've seen seeing a lot of things about Ys's actual story, like the "Eldeen's," and I was wondering if anyone would be able to fill me in on that.
I've played Ys I&II, near completed Oath in Felghana, near completed Mask of the Sun last year, but I don't remember anything AT ALL in regards to details like this.
I'm assuming most of the history of the Eldeen's occur in Mask of the Sun (based on the name of the last boss,) and if that's the case, then I may have to replay it, because I don't remember much about it and I did rush through a bit of it.
Thanks!

Actually most of Eldeen history will be found in Ys 6 Ark of Napishtim, assuming you're looking for story/background info. It's true that the boss of Mask of the Sun is of the Eldeen race, but that game itself doesn't go into much detail on the matter.

Yeah, a lot of the connections are sort of done by working backwards. I, II, IV and VI are the Eldeen arc so far and the last is the one that really ties the whole thing together. Actually, it tied everything together, continuing the elements developed in I, II and IV, establishing some links to III that would be fully explored by Oath in Felghana and then making V semi-relevant by turning Terra into a returning character. I highly suggest picking up either the PS2 version of Ark of Napishtim or buying the PC one and grabbing the excellent translation patch. Give the PSP version a miss unless it's the only way possible for you to play it.
Long story short, the Eldeen were the race of winged humanoids that lived alongside humans and were looked on as gods. The exact relationship they had with humanity is kinda screwy because the only games that really go into detail are inconsistent thanks to Ys IV's unique development history and Falcom's shifting idea of which version of the game counts as canon. We're all hoping they remake Ys IV soon so we can have one official version of the game and Falcom can redo the game in light of whatever long-term ideas they have for the Eldeen that they probably weren't thinking about when IV first came out. Oh, and because IV has the best Ys girl ever and more people need to be informed of her awesomeness.

I own the PSP version of Napishtim. I tried it out today after finishing Oath and Seven, and I must say it feels near-unplayable in comparison to the other two.

I'm of the unpopular opinion that it's worth owning both the PS2 and PSP versions for the extra content. The PC version is awesome for the simple fact that it has higher resolution sprites and models -- which I prefer over the PS2 version's bland models.
// I can't defend the actual game itself though. Compared to OiF, Origin, and Seven, AoN is just crap. That's also an unpopular opinion, by the way.

That's exactly what I mean. The dungeons aren't even that interesting, everything just feels so plain. I like the controls, I like the engine, I like the bosses and the enemies, and a few songs... but it's flavorless. There's not enough content. Another problem is the trailer -- and let me make this perfectly clear. The trailer made AoN look epic, when I saw the trailer, I expected it to be like OiF. Yes, before OiF was ever announced or developed, I had hopes that AoN would be a great game like OiF was. I don't know if that makes sense, but I'm trying to somehow show you how hyped I was for it. Listening to the Ernst theme, and Mighty Obstacle, and watching the trailer like a hawk -- every day, until the PS2 version's release. I bought the PS2 version before I ever even owned a PS2. That's how bad I wanted it.
So I was hyped so much, that when I got it, I was actually let down. I expected the game to be an embodiment of the Ernst theme, and Mighty Obstacle, that somehow it would be a physical manifestation of the music and trailer (ironically enough) that represented it. Unfortunately, it was not.

Yeah, AoN has some issues that drop it down below the games that came after it in awesomeness factor -relatively speaking at least, it's still a Falcom game!- but I'm still compelled to love it for two things. First, it reignited the Ys series after almost a decade of ports following the much much worse (gameplay and music-wise) Ys V. Second, Terra!
Edit: And like Wyrd says, it's got a nice focus on the story, moves the Eldeen arc along a bit and has two nicely developed towns that come alive with all the dialogue changes as the story progresses.

Somehow, I still like Ys V more. Maybe it's just the retro-goggles speaking, and maybe it's the fact that I like black sheep. Ys III, Ys V, Zelda II, Majora's Mask, Mega Man III, Mega Man VI, Mega Man X2, Mega Man X3, Mega Man X6; you see where I'm going with this. I seem to favor games that are unpopular -- majorly because of either how generic they are, or how different they are. Ys V is old-school, its environments are pretty rich for an SNES game, and it's not too boring. Plus, I dig that the soundtrack went in the direction of a sortof "movie soundtrack". Field of Gale (and quite a few other tracks) stick out in my head as even better than a lot of field and dungeon tracks in Ys VI. I'll pretty much be alone in this, if only for the simple fact that my opinion is almost always the unpopular one.
Oh, and StH '06? Loved it!
// P.S. I hate Terra.

Wow, I completely disagree with you (just switch Ys V with Ys VI and you'll have my exact opinion) -- up until your last paragraph about the boss themes. Then I agree.
Here's something you'd agree with me on, though, guaranteed: Ys V's boss themes are MUCH better than Konami's Ys VI boss themes. Not only were Konami's tracks generic, but they were bland too! At least Ys V had the "movie soundtrack" feel to it; but Konami almost made the biggest mistake of their career with their consideration to replace the Ys VI soundtrack with their crap. On the other hand, "The Art of Evasion" (from the PSP) is still better than the original Ys VI track.

Oh, and StH '06? Loved it! I curse you to an ironic hell where you spend all eternity breakdancing because you slightly grazed a toe-high obstacle. Wait, I take it back, it's the regular fire and brimstone for you.

In the end, though, it's all relative. While Ys V's soundtrack may not be as awesome for me as it is for you, and Ys VI's may not be as awesome for you as it is for me... I think we can both agree that they both kick the crap out of (or at least stand on even footing with) the soundtracks to pretty much any other action RPGs of their respective eras. Even at its "worst," Falcom music still kicks ass. I agree! ...shortest response evar!!!Oh, and StH '06? Loved it! I curse you to an ironic hell where you spend all eternity breakdancing because you slightly grazed a toe-high obstacle. Nah, my hell would be those metal balls suspended in the air getting zapped by laser beams -- or the simple fact that Shadow's vehicles tend to screw up. I'm on a boat! I'm on a boat! *flips over and dies* Wouldn't that be Lava Zone? Oh well, at least I'VE GOT HARB! (Genesis)

I have all the ones released on PSP and I can't really complain about Ark esp since it was a gift from a friend in england and I like AoN I just feel it's lacking a lot compared to when I play Chronicles,Oath,Seven.
Don't get me wrong not played a version of Ys I didn't like yet. Even Ys III on SNES I really enjoyed. Just even to me when a Ys game is not at it's best it's still darn good IMO.

Let's just put it this way: Ys rules.
